At Microsoft Quantum, we aim to empower scientists to solve some of the world's biggest problems by developing advanced computing platforms at the intersection of high-performance computing, artificial intelligence, and quantum information technology.\nThe Microsoft Quantum team is dedicated to developing the first scalable, fault-tolerant quantum computer. Our work spans quantum hardware, error correction, and integration with Azure. Our accomplished, diverse international team is focused on building a scalable quantum computing system. Our full-stack strategy encompasses breakthroughs in quantum device physics, scalable readout, and control infrastructure powered by cryoelectronics. As quantum computing enters a pivotal phase of accelerated growth, this position offers an opportunity to contribute to a transformative technology.\nMicrosoft is seeking a Quantum Technical Program Manager (TPM), at the Senior to Principal level, to lead the end-to-end delivery of next-generation quantum hardware systems. You will drive cross-functional execution across research, engineering, and external partners to develop scalable, production-ready quantum solutions. Working closely with subsystem research and development leaders in areas such as control, packaging, and test and measurement, you will align roadmaps, manage risks, and deliver critical milestones. This high-impact leadership role calls for deep technical expertise, strong program management skills, and a customer-focused mindset.\nYou will collaborate with physicists, quantum theorists, experimentalists, research and systems engineers, technical program managers, supply chain experts, cloud architects, and external partners to accelerate the scale-up of topological qubits and quantum systems. If you thrive on complex program challenges, can navigate ambiguity, and are passionate about foundational technologies, we invite you to help shape the future of quantum computing.\nAt Microsoft, our mission-to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more-guides how we partner with customers to deliver trusted, impactful solutions. With a growth mindset culture, we innovate responsibly and measure success by shared progress-people, teams, and customers. Join us to do meaningful work that changes the world and helps shape what’s next for everyone.\nResponsibilities\nDrive program execution: Lead program management for pivotal quantum hardware initiatives, from concept development and engineering design through prototyping, validation, operational scaling, and ongoing delivery. Collaborate with system architects, research scientists, and hardware engineers to achieve program goals.\nStrategic planning and roadmapping: Work with program management leadership, engineering teams, and executive stakeholders to develop and maintain a roadmap for hardware platform advancement. Align technical milestones, resources, schedules, and risk responses with Microsoft Quantum's long-term goals.\nCross-disciplinary coordination: Align teams working in quantum device physics, cryoelectronics, materials science, hardware control, manufacturing, supply chain, integration, and cloud hardware operations to deliver reliable, scalable hardware solutions.\nSupplier and partner engagement: Manage relationships with external foundries, research laboratories, equipment vendors, and strategic partners. Establish clear requirements and support compliance with Microsoft's standards for quality, safety, and data security.\nRisk management: Identify, monitor, and mitigate technical, schedule, and operational risks. Apply lessons learned and adapt plans as technologies and program needs evolve.\nAgile delivery: Oversee Agile program processes and ceremonies, provide regular reviews and updates, and remove obstacles to the timely delivery of critical milestones.\nCustomer focus: Incorporate feedback from internal and pilot customers, including researchers, manufacturing partners, and Azure Quantum platform teams, to improve hardware and processes.\nExecutive communication: Develop concise, data-driven updates on program status, milestones, risks, dependencies, and impact for executive and other stakeholders.\nCulture and values: Promote respect, collaboration, integrity, and inclusivity. Mentor team members and foster a learning-oriented environment within the quantum TPM organization.\nOther: Embody Microsoft's Culture and Values.\nQualifications\nRequired qualifications\nBachelor's degree and 4+ years of experience in engineering, product or technical program management, data analysis, or product development, or equivalent experience.\n2+ years of experience managing cross-functional and/or cross-team projects.\nOther requirements\nAbility to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements is required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to, the following specialized security screenings:\nMicrosoft Cloud Background Check: This position requires passing the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire or transfer and every two years thereafter.\n Citizenship and citizenship verification: This role will require access to information that is controlled for export under export control regulations, potentially under the U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations or Export Administration Regulations, the EU Dual Use Regulation, and/or other export control regulations. As a condition of employment, the successful candidate will be required to provide either proof of their country of citizenship or proof of their U.S. permanent residency or other protected status (e.g., under 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)) for assessment of eligibility to access the export-controlled information. To meet this legal requirement, and as a condition of employment, the successful candidate’s citizenship will be verified with a valid passport. Lawful permanent residents, refugees, and asylees may verify status using other documents, where applicable.\nPreferred qualifications\nAn advanced degree (M.Sc. or Ph.D.) in a relevant field, such as quantum information, physics, materials science, electrical engineering, or hardware systems; or equivalent applied experience in quantum or cryogenic hardware programs.\n10+ years of experience managing multi-year, highly complex hardware product portfolios involving deep technology or first-of-a-kind technology, such as board or SoC bring-up, BIOS and driver development, quantum systems, ASICs, FPGAs, advanced chip packaging, cryoelectronics, or high-reliability hardware.\nDirect experience with quantum device development, quantum error correction, or quantum measurement and control hardware.\nHands-on development or testing experience with quantum hardware systems, including cryogenic systems.\nExperience with semiconductor, electronics, or advanced materials supply chains, contract manufacturers, or research and development foundries.\nDemonstrated success leading external research, university, government, or consortium partnerships in advanced hardware or scientific domains.\nExperience transferring technology from research and development to scaled engineering and manufacturing, including developing and auditing hardware quality systems and test protocols.\nDemonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced product development environment within a matrixed organization.\nAbility to use AI tools to improve innovation and efficiency, such as performance modeling and analysis, research gathering, and day-to-day task automation.\nExperience applying AI to engineering and lab workflows, including designing and building agents or copilots that assist with experiment setup, log triage, measurement reports, protocol templates, and knowledge retrieval.\nExperience evaluating agentic solutions using measurable metrics and human-in-the-loop safeguards in accordance with Microsoft Responsible AI requirements for generative AI.\n#Quantum #QuantumCareers #MDQCareers\nTechnical Program Management IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year.
