Our engineers contribute to and maintain projects across the Kubernetes cloud-native ecosystem.\nAbout the Role\nMirantis is looking for an Open Source Engineering Lead to inspire and manage the engineering team responsible for k0s and k0smotron.\nk0s is a CNCF Kubernetes distribution designed to make Kubernetes simple to deploy and operate across cloud, bare metal, edge, and other environments. It packages the components required to run Kubernetes into a highly portable, self-contained distribution with minimal dependencies.\nThe successful candidate will combine three roles: engineering leader for the k0s team, senior technical maintainer of the project, and a visible technical representative of k0s within the Kubernetes and CNCF communities.\nYou will lead a distributed team of experienced Kubernetes engineers and open source maintainers while remaining technically engaged in the projects themselves. You will establish technical direction, maintain a high engineering bar, ensure Kubernetes and Kubernetes AI conformance, grow the contributor and maintainer community, and guide k0s through successive stages of CNCF project maturity.\nThis is a hands-on technical leadership role, not a pure people-management position.\n Responsibilities\nEngineering & Team Leadership\nLead, mentor, and develop a distributed team of engineers working on k0s, k0smotron, and related Kubernetes technologies.\n\nEstablish clear engineering priorities, ownership, and expectations while giving experienced engineers the autonomy to solve difficult problems.\n\nConduct regular 1:1s, provide actionable feedback, support career development, and participate in hiring and onboarding.\n\nBuild an engineering culture based on technical excellence, pragmatism, transparency, collaboration, and ownership.\n\nDevelop additional technical leaders and maintainers so that critical project knowledge and ownership are distributed across the team and community.\n\nKubernetes Technical & Release Leadership\nProvide technical direction for k0s and related projects while working collaboratively with maintainers and the broader community.\n\nParticipate directly in architecture and design discussions, code and pull-request reviews, issue triage, debugging, and technical decision making.\n\nMaintain deep expertise in Kubernetes architecture, control-plane components, lifecycle management, networking, storage, security, scheduling, and distributed systems.\n\nTrack upstream Kubernetes development and ensure relevant capabilities, architectural changes, deprecations, and requirements are incorporated into the k0s roadmap.\n\nDrive engineering quality across testing, CI/CD, release engineering, upgradeability, security, observability, performance, and operational reliability.\n\nBalance architectural improvement and technical debt against features, community needs, ecosystem evolution, and Mirantis product requirements.\n\nOpen Source, CNCF & Community Leadership\nAct as a senior maintainer and visible technical leader within the k0s and k0smotron open source communities.\n\nPartner with the Community Manager and project maintainers to drive k0s through CNCF maturity from Sandbox through Incubation toward Graduation. This includes governance, security, adoption, documentation, maintainer diversity, community health, and CNCF review requirements.\n\nGrow meaningful participation outside Mirantis by developing contributors into sustained participants and maintainers, cultivating adopters, and strengthening vendor-neutral project governance.\n\nServe as a visible technical representative for k0s and k0smotron across the Kubernetes and CNCF ecosystems, including KubeCon + CloudNativeCon, Kubernetes Community Days, SIGs, TAGs, maintainer forums, conferences, workshops, podcasts, webinars, and other technical venues.\n\nDevelop productive relationships with upstream Kubernetes developers, Cluster API maintainers, CNCF projects, vendors, adopters, and other ecosystem participants.\n\nProduct & Ecosystem Collaboration\nWork closely with Mirantis product, architecture, field engineering, support, community, and other engineering teams, including those for k0rdent, MOSK, and MKE.\n\nTranslate production experience and customer requirements into well-designed upstream capabilities without compromising sound open source architecture.\n\nHelp determine when capabilities belong in k0s, should be contributed to another upstream project, or should be composed from existing ecosystem technologies.\n\nMaintain clear architectural relationships among k0s, k0smotron, Cluster API, k0rdent, and the broader Kubernetes ecosystem.\n\nServe as a Kubernetes and open source subject-matter expert within Mirantis.\n\n Required\nSignificant professional software engineering experience (10+ years desired), including experience leading senior engineers and open source development teams.\n\nDeep, hands-on knowledge of Kubernetes, its architecture, control plane, and the underlying Linux, container, networking, storage, and distributed-systems technologies.\n\nDemonstrated experience designing, building, debugging, or operating Kubernetes infrastructure beyond simply consuming managed Kubernetes services.\n\nStrong experience with Go and the ability to review and contribute to production-quality Go code.\n\nExperience working effectively through GitHub-based open source development workflows including issues, pull requests, reviews, CI, releases, and community discussions.\n\nDemonstrated technical leadership in architecture, design reviews, mentoring, technical decision making, and driving complex engineering work to completion.\n\nStrong written and verbal English communication skills.\n\nAbility to operate effectively in a globally distributed, asynchronous engineering organization.\n\nStrongly Preferred\nExisting maintainer, reviewer, or significant contributor experience in Kubernetes, CNCF, or another substantial open source infrastructure project.\n\nExperience with Kubernetes Cluster API (CAPI) and Kubernetes controllers, operators, CRDs, or other Kubernetes-native control-plane software.\n\nExperience with Kubernetes cluster bootstrap, upgrades, lifecycle management, high availability, and conformance testing or certification.\n\nDeep familiarity with Kubernetes internals such as etcd, containerd, kubelet, API machinery, CNI, and CSI.\n\nExperience with k0s, k0smotron, or similar Kubernetes distributions and cluster lifecycle technologies.\n\nExperience managing Kubernetes across bare metal, public cloud, edge, IoT, or heterogeneous infrastructure.\n\nFamiliarity with emerging Kubernetes AI infrastructure requirements including accelerators, scheduling, networking, inference, and AI workload portability.\n\nExperience with CNCF project governance, maturity reviews, maintainership, or community processes.\n\nExperience speaking at technical conferences, running workshops, producing technical content, or otherwise representing an open source project publicly.\n\nExperience with release management, vulnerability response, dependency management, or software supply-chain processes for open source infrastructure.\n\n Why Mirantis\nYou will have the opportunity to:\nLead development of a real Kubernetes distribution rather than simply building applications on Kubernetes.\n\nWork directly with Kubernetes internals and important projects across the cloud-native ecosystem.\n\nInfluence the technical direction of k0s, k0smotron, and the surrounding ecosystems.\n\nContribute upstream and participate directly in CNCF and Kubernetes communities.\n\nRepresent the project at major cloud-native conferences and technical forums.\n\nSolve infrastructure problems spanning cloud, bare metal, edge, platform engineering, AI infrastructure, and large-scale Kubernetes environments.\n\nIt is understood that Mirantis, Inc. may use automated decision-making technology (ADMT) for specific employment-related decisions. Opting out of ADMT use is requested for decisions about evaluation and review connected with the specific employment decision for the position applied for. You also have the right to appeal any decisions made by ADMT by sending your request to \nBy submitting your resume, you consent to the processing and storage of your personal data in accordance with applicable data protection laws, for the purposes of considering your application for current and future job opportunities.\nWe are a Leader for Container Management in G2 (#2 after AWS)!\nWe are a Leader for Container Management in G2 (#2 after AWS)!","description_format":"text","description_chars":8792,"description_truncated":false,"requirements":{"experience_years_min":10,"management_years_min":null,"team_size_min":null,"manages_managers":false,"education":null,"security_clearance":false,"languages":[{"language":"English","level":"Upper-Intermediate (B2)","optional":false}]},"benefits":[],"hiring_locations":[{"name":"Spain","iso":"ES","kind":"country"}],"hiring_excludes":[],"relocation_offered":false,"industries":["DevOps & Platform Engineering","Cloud Platforms (IaaS & PaaS)"],"lifecycle":[{"event":"open","at":"2026-10-06T16:06:44Z"}],"visa":[],"liveness":{"score":99,"band":"hot","label":"Hiring now","p_open":1,"p_active":0.993,"p_room":1,"age_days":1,"expected_fill_days":22,"reasons":["conf:1","wave","velocity","win:early"],"computed_at":"2026-10-08T05:49:30Z"},"pay":null,"html_url":"https://alion.io/job/mirantis-open-source-engineering-lead-for-k0s","json_url":"https://alion.io/job/mirantis-open-source-engineering-lead-for-k0s.json","meta":{"generated_at":"2026-10-09T03:22:26Z","cache_seconds":300,"methodology":"https://alion.io/methodology","terms":"https://alion.io/terms","contact":"https://alion.io/contact","api":"https://alion.io/developers","about":"Alion is a live layer of people, companies and AI agents: who they are, whether they are real and active right now, what they do and how to work with them, readable by people and by agents and paid per call.","catalog":"https://alion.io/catalog.json","usage":{"tier":"crawler","counted_by":"address","units_charged":1,"used_today":1975,"day_limit":5000,"remaining_today":3025,"minute_limit":60,"resets_at":"2026-10-10T00:00:00Z"}},"offers":[{"id":"company.slices","title":"One company in depth, by slice","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002,"plus_per_slice":{"credits":0.05,"usd":0.005}},"unit":"per company, plus each slice with data","note":"the employer in depth","call":{"mcp_tool":"get_company","arguments":{"id":5338},"rest":"https://alion.io/mcp/rest/get_company?id=5338"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.slices&for=job%2Fmirantis-open-source-engineering-lead-for-k0s"},{"id":"market.stats","title":"A market slice: pay, demand and time to fill","status":"live","price":{"credits":1,"usd":0.1},"unit":"per slice","note":"pay, demand and time to fill for this role and place","call":{"mcp_tool":"market_stats"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=market.stats&for=job%2Fmirantis-open-source-engineering-lead-for-k0s"},{"id":"job.search","title":"Open jobs by role, technology, place, pay and visa","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002},"unit":"per posting in a list","note":"similar open postings","call":{"mcp_tool":"search_jobs"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=job.search&for=job%2Fmirantis-open-source-engineering-lead-for-k0s"},{"id":"company.verify","title":"Is this company real and active right now","status":"pilot","price":null,"unit":"per company","request":{"url":"https://alion.io/catalog/request","method":"POST","body":"{\"offer\": \"company.verify\", \"for\": \"job/mirantis-open-source-engineering-lead-for-k0s\", \"note\": \"what you need it for\"}"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.verify&for=job%2Fmirantis-open-source-engineering-lead-for-k0s"}]}
