The Metal Shop Supervisor provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for all metal shop activities on a designated shift. This role is accountable for driving production throughput, implementing continuous process improvements, and ensuring all projects meet rigorous customer deadlines and quality standards. The Supervisor exercises direct authority over Metal Shop Leads and Metal Shop personnel, ensuring that every product aligns with precise client specifications and internal quality controls prior to shipment. As a primary leader on the production floor, the incumbent manages resource allocation, is responsible for shift safety, and personnel development to maintain a high-performance culture. While this is a non-exempt role with standard 40-hour work weeks, it requires a high degree of flexibility to accommodate mandatory overtime, including evenings and weekends, to meet critical production milestones. The supervisor will be assigned to either the first or second shift operation.

Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Team Oversight: Lead and mentor a team of Metal Shop Leads, ensuring strict adherence to company policies, operational procedures, and safety standards.
  • Performance Accountability: Evaluate the performance of assigned Metal Shop Leads and contribute to the formal performance management process for the Metal Shop team, including the final review of evaluations for metal shop technicians and support personnel.
  • Talent Development: Identify specialized training needs and skill gaps within the team, facilitating professional growth and cross-training initiatives.
  • Talent Acquisition: Direct the recruitment and onboarding process for new hires, ensuring successful integration into the production environment.
  • Continuous Improvement (Lean/Process): Design and execute systemic enhancements to production workflows, specifically targeting project tracking accuracy, productivity metrics and execution speed.
  • Facility Optimization: Review and propose configurations to the physical floor layout to optimize material flow and maximize production efficiency
  • Quality Governance: Lead the implementation of quality control programs to support company initiatives and goals.
  • Asset Management: Establish and manage comprehensive preventative maintenance programs to ensure maximum machinery uptime for the department.
  • Safety Compliance: Conduct mandatory safety briefings and exercise direct authority to enforce OSHA standards and internal safety protocols.
  • Site Stewardship: Manage facility security by overseeing opening and closing procedures and ensuring site-wide safety during the assigned shift.
  • Operational Reporting: Maintain rigorous documentation of production metrics, including labor hours and output quality, to deliver formal reporting to the Metal Shop Manager.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with interdepartmental teams to align metal shop activities with broader company goals and identify growth opportunities for the department.

Required Knowledge/Experience:

  • Minimum of 4 -5 years of experience in a manufacturing and production facility in various roles.
  • Prior leadership or supervisory experience preferred.
  • Hands-on experience with hand and power tools, measurement devices, and reading blueprints.
  • Bachelor’s or Technical College degree in a related field, which may include Electrical Power, Computer Science, Business, or Engineering, a plus.

Required Skill/Abilities:

  • Team Leadership: Ability to motivate and manage a diverse team, foster a collaborative environment, and drive collective performance.
  • Effective Communication: Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate clearly with stakeholders via in-person interactions, phone, and digital platforms (email/collaboration software).
  • Autonomous Problem-Solving: Ability to work with minimal supervision, exercising sound judgment to resolve issues and achieve departmental objectives.
  • Technical Literacy: Advanced ability to read and interpret complex schematics, blueprints, and technical diagrams.
  • Production Alignment: Capable of following complex verbal and written instructions to ensure the production schedule remains on track.
  • Quality Assurance: Highly detail-oriented with a steadfast commitment to quality standards to minimize rework and ensure product integrity.
  • Adaptability: Ability to multitask and maintain composure while delivering high-quality results under tight deadlines or high-pressure constraints.
  • Precision Tooling: Proficient in the use of hand and power tools with high accuracy. This includes, but is not limited to:
  • Measurement: Calipers, scales, rulers, and tape measures.
  • Fastening: Impact guns, torque wrenches, gear wrenches, and both metric and standard socket sets.

A Note to our Recruitment Partners: We really appreciate the interest, but MCG currently manages hiring through our internal team. We love getting to know our candidates directly!
