Since 2020, we have rapidly pioneered the world’s most versatile direct air capture (DAC) technology to recover historic CO₂ emissions from the atmosphere, anywhere at any scale. Backed by Breakthrough Energy Ventures, the XPRIZE foundation, Stripe, and the UK Government, we’ve moved a brand new climate technology from lab to commercial plants in under three years to rapidly empower carbon removal and sustainable utilisation.\n About the role\nJoin MZT at a pivotal moment as we transition from an early-stage R&D startup to a revenue-generating company ready to scale our direct-air capture technology globally.\nWe're looking for an Electrochemical Stack Engineer to develop our next generation of stack designs. Electrodialytic approaches to DAC lean on established electrodialysis designs, however these designs are far from optimal for the specificity of electrochemical direct-air capture. As our Electrochemical Stack Engineer you'll lead stack development at MZT. You'll define the opportunity areas for our next-generation stack, develop concepts that attack the biggest resistance losses in the cell, while ensuring stability and robustness, and lead the build-test-evaluate cycles that prove (or kill) them. For winning concepts, you'll scale them into full-size stacks, navigating supply chain and manufacturing constraints along the way.\nThe role has two sides. You'll lead on the stacks we procure, assessing what the supply chain offers, judging their suitability for our process and specifying modifications where needed. In parallel, you'll lead the development of DAC-optimised electrodialytic stacks designed around our process conditions from the start. On both fronts you'll work closely with our process, mechanical and electrical engineers so that the stack meets the requirements of our DAC technology and the wider plant design.\nReporting to the R&D leadership team, you'll work alongside key members of the R&D lab, and mentor junior scientists and engineers as the team grows.\nWhat you’ll be doing\nDefining the opportunity areas for MZT's next-generation electrochemical stack: quantifying where the losses sit and which are worth attacking first\nDeveloping concepts for performance improvement across cell geometry, materials and flow design, backed by models and analysis that clarify your predictions\nLeading build-test-evaluate cycles with the R&D team: designing testing campaigns, characterising stack performance and tracing observed phenomena back to underlying mechanisms and design features\nScaling successful concepts into full-scale stacks, working through fabrication, assembly and design-for-manufacture constraints\nLeading stack procurement: assessing commercially available stacks, specifying modifications and managing technical relationships with vendors and manufacturers\nArticulating stack requirements to process, mechanical, electrical and safety engineers so the stack and the wider plant design converge\nClosing the feedback loop: internalising learnings from every campaign and applying them to subsequent stack designs\nMentoring, guiding and supporting junior staff, helping them acquire new skills, knowledge and capabilities\nWhat you’ll need to be successful in this role\nA deep grounding in the theory and mathematical principles that describe electrochemical processes. You understand electrochemistry from first principles, not just by analogy or heuristics\nExperience designing electrochemical stacks at multiple scales involving aqueous electrolytes, ion-exchange membranes and gas generation\nA strong grasp of how the culmination of geometric features, material selection and process parameters determines the critical performance parameters of a stack\nA track record of taking designs through to fabricated, assembled hardware in collaboration with mechanical, electrical and process engineers\nSignificant experience designing and executing testing campaigns, with the diagnostic instinct to trace behaviour back to root mechanisms\nThe habit of reducing problems to first principles and building models to sharpen your thinking, paired with the judgement to reach for heuristics when they're the better tool\nEqual appetite for ideation and execution: you can get obsessed with a problem, and you finish what you start\nAs comfortable in the lab or workshop as you are developing designs, models and analysis\nExperience mentoring, guiding or supervising junior colleagues\nA degree in chemical engineering, electrochemical engineering, materials science or a related discipline\nRoughly 5-10 years' experience spanning stack design, testing and scale-up\nClear communication skills across engineering disciplines\nIdeally, you’ll also have:\nDirect experience with electrodialysis, bipolar membranes or related ion-exchange membrane processes\nHands-on experience with carbonate or alkaline electrolytes, and with managing gas evolution and two-phase flow inside cells\nElectrochemical or multiphysics modelling experience (COMSOL or equivalent, or your own codes)\nExperience with EIS and other advanced electrochemical diagnostics\nWorking CAD skills, enough to take your own concepts from sketch to drawing\nExperience working directly with stack, membrane or component manufacturers, and navigating their manufacturing constraints\nA PhD in electrochemistry, electrochemical engineering or a related field\nExperience in a startup or similarly fast-moving R&D environment\nPatents or publications in electrochemical cell or stack design\nMost importantly, we'd also welcome hearing from you even if you feel you are under or overqualified - as finding the right person is critical.\nWhat we can offer you\n30 days of Annual Leave\n3 months enhanced Paternity/Maternity Leave\nAccess to wellness and medical cover\nEmployee Share Options Scheme\nChristmas holidays office closure\nCycle to work scheme\nOpportunities to directly impact where our company is headed\nA high-growth, high-trust environment that encourages bold creativity\nAt Mission Zero, we value diversity of cultural backgrounds, experience, and perspectives, and leverage these qualities to create exceptional outcomes. We are dedicated to equal employment opportunities regardless of race, sex, religion or belief, ethnic or national origin, age, disability, citizenship, marital, domestic or civil partnership status, sexual orientation, gender identity, pregnancy or related condition, or any other basis as protected by applicable law. Please do not hesitate to let us know if you have a disability or additional need that requires accommodation.\nOur Hiring Process\nKindly allow us up to 2 weeks to review your application. Providing both of our schedules align, the total hiring process should take 4-6 weeks total to wrap up.\nApplication review\nRecruiter / HR screening interview (30 minutes)\nInterview with R&D Lead / Principal Scientist(s)\nShort case assignment and competencies (3 hours max. Ideally in person in London - travel paid for)\nFinal interview - CTO / Team Lead (30 mins)","description_format":"text","description_chars":7123,"description_truncated":false,"requirements":{"experience_years_min":5,"management_years_min":null,"team_size_min":null,"manages_managers":false,"education":{"level":"phd","optional":false},"security_clearance":false,"languages":[]},"benefits":["Annual leave","Stock options"],"hiring_locations":[],"hiring_excludes":[],"relocation_offered":false,"industries":["Energy & Utilities","Fossil Fuels","Higher Education"],"lifecycle":[{"event":"open","at":"2026-09-13T02:29:15Z"}],"visa":[{"country":"GB","licensed_sponsor":true,"evidence":"Licensed UK visa sponsor (Skilled Worker)","filings_12m":null,"filings_prev_12m":null,"green_card_filings_12m":null,"median_offered_wage_usd":null,"route":"Skilled Worker","cap_exempt":false,"checked_at":"2026-10-23T06:21:00+00:00","sources":["UK Home Office: register of licensed sponsors (workers)"],"filings_for_role_12m":0}],"liveness":{"score":11,"band":"cold","label":"Long shot","p_open":1,"p_active":0.389,"p_room":0.28,"age_days":87,"expected_fill_days":30,"reasons":["conf:1","win:tail","crowd:"],"computed_at":"2026-10-23T05:54:15Z"},"pay":null,"html_url":"https://alion.io/job/mission-zero-technologies-senior-electrochemical-stack-engineer","json_url":"https://alion.io/job/mission-zero-technologies-senior-electrochemical-stack-engineer.json","meta":{"generated_at":"2026-10-23T16:51:27Z","cache_seconds":300,"methodology":"https://alion.io/methodology","terms":"https://alion.io/terms","contact":"https://alion.io/contact","api":"https://alion.io/developers","about":"Alion is a live layer of people, companies and AI agents: who they are, whether they are real and active right now, what they do and how to work with them, readable by people and by agents and paid per call.","catalog":"https://alion.io/catalog.json","usage":{"tier":"crawler_verified","counted_by":"address","units_charged":1,"used_today":25566,"day_limit":null,"remaining_today":null,"minute_limit":300,"resets_at":"2026-10-24T00:00:00Z"}},"offers":[{"id":"company.slices","title":"One company in depth, by slice","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002,"plus_per_slice":{"credits":0.05,"usd":0.005}},"unit":"per company, plus each slice with data","note":"the employer in depth","call":{"mcp_tool":"get_company","arguments":{"id":172332},"rest":"https://alion.io/mcp/rest/get_company?id=172332"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.slices&for=job%2Fmission-zero-technologies-senior-electrochemical-stack-engineer"},{"id":"market.stats","title":"A market slice: pay, demand and time to fill","status":"live","price":{"credits":1,"usd":0.1},"unit":"per slice","note":"pay, demand and time to fill for this role and place","call":{"mcp_tool":"market_stats"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=market.stats&for=job%2Fmission-zero-technologies-senior-electrochemical-stack-engineer"},{"id":"job.search","title":"Open jobs by role, technology, place, pay and visa","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002},"unit":"per posting in a list","note":"similar open postings","call":{"mcp_tool":"search_jobs"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=job.search&for=job%2Fmission-zero-technologies-senior-electrochemical-stack-engineer"},{"id":"company.verify","title":"Is this company real and active right now","status":"pilot","price":null,"unit":"per company","request":{"url":"https://alion.io/catalog/request","method":"POST","body":"{\"offer\": \"company.verify\", \"for\": \"job/mission-zero-technologies-senior-electrochemical-stack-engineer\", \"note\": \"what you need it for\"}"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.verify&for=job%2Fmission-zero-technologies-senior-electrochemical-stack-engineer"}]}
