Modulr is backed by PayPal, FIS, General Atlantic, Blenheim Chalcot, Frog Capital and Highland Europe, with over 400 employees across London, Edinburgh, Amsterdam, Mumbai and Pune. \nAbout the Role \nWe are seeking a hands-on Lead DevOps Engineer to lead the design, delivery, and operation of secure, scalable, and highly available cloud infrastructure.\nThis role combines approximately 60% individual contribution with 40% team leadership and management. You will remain actively involved in architecture, automation, implementation, troubleshooting, and operational support while mentoring engineers, setting technical standards, and coordinating the team's delivery.\nThe ideal candidate has deep, practical expertise in Amazon Web Services (AWS) and working knowledge of other major cloud platforms, particularly Microsoft Azure and GCP\nKey Responsibilities\nHands-on Engineering - 60%\nDesign and implement secure, scalable, resilient, and highly available cloud and hybrid environments, primarily on AWS.\nOwn and evolve AWS architecture across networking, compute, storage, identity, security, containers, and managed services.\nBuild and maintain automated CI/CD pipelines using GitLab CI, Argo CD, Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or similar tools.\nImplement GitOps practices and automate application deployment, configuration, testing, and release processes.\nProvision and manage infrastructure using Terraform and/or AWS CloudFormation, following reusable and version-controlled Infrastructure as Code practices.\nDesign, deploy, and operate containerised workloads using Docker and Kubernetes, preferably Amazon EKS.\nImprove Kubernetes resilience through effective workload configuration, autoscaling, resource management, health checks, ingress, secrets management, and disaster-recovery practices.\nDevelop automation and operational tooling using Python, Bash, or PowerShell.\nImplement comprehensive observability using Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, centralised logging, distributed tracing, alerting, and service-level indicators.\nEmbed security throughout the software delivery lifecycle, including identity and access management, secrets management, vulnerability scanning, policy enforcement, encryption, and supply-chain security.\nTroubleshoot complex infrastructure, deployment, performance, and production reliability issues.\nParticipate in incident response, root-cause analysis, capacity planning, and continuous service improvement.\nIdentify opportunities to improve reliability, security, developer productivity, performance, and cloud cost efficiency.\nLeadership and Management - 40%\nLead, mentor, and develop DevOps, cloud, and platform engineers through coaching, technical guidance, and regular feedback.\nEstablish and maintain engineering standards for cloud architecture, automation, CI/CD, security, reliability, and operational readiness.\nPlan and prioritise the team's work in partnership with engineering, product, security, and business stakeholders.\nProvide technical direction while balancing delivery timelines, operational risk, scalability, security, and cost.\nReview architectural proposals, infrastructure code, automation, and operational processes.\nPromote a culture of ownership, collaboration, documentation, continuous improvement, and blameless learning.\nCoordinate incident response and ensure corrective actions are documented, prioritised, and completed.\nSupport recruitment, onboarding, performance management, career development, and capability planning.\nCommunicate technical risks, dependencies, progress, and recommendations clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.\nChampion DevSecOps, Site Reliability Engineering, and cloud governance practices across the organisation.\nPerson Specification\nEssential \nAt least 8+ years of experience in DevOps, cloud engineering, platform engineering, Site Reliability Engineering, or a related field.\nPrevious experience leading, mentoring, or managing engineers.\nStrong, recent, hands-on expertise in AWS, including production cloud architecture and operations.\nWorking knowledge of Microsoft Azure and/or GCP and an understanding of multi-cloud concepts.\nStrong experience with CI/CD platforms, preferably GitLab CI, plus familiarity with Argo CD, Jenkins, or GitHub Actions.\nAdvanced experience with Infrastructure as Code, particularly Terraform or AWS CloudFormation.\nStrong practical experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and Amazon EKS in production environments.\nProficiency in at least one scripting or programming language, such as Python, Bash, or PowerShell.\nExperience implementing monitoring, logging, alerting, and tracing using tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, CloudWatch, or equivalent platforms.\nStrong understanding of cloud networking, DNS, load balancing, identity and access management, secrets management, and security controls.\nExperience designing highly available systems and implementing backup, disaster-recovery, and business-continuity strategies.\nExperience supporting ISO 27001 and PCI DSS compliance audits, with hands-on expertise in implementing CIS Benchmarks and supporting penetration testing and remediation activities.\nStrong troubleshooting, problem-solving, documentation, stakeholder-management, and communication skills.\nDesired\nAWS certifications such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect, DevOps Engineer, or Security -
