We have big ambitions and have many interesting challenges ahead.\nSummary\nIn this role you will design, build, and evolve the next generation of Modulr’s event-driven payments platform. You’ll work across the full engineering lifecycle-from shaping technical approaches to delivering production-grade software-within a squad that values ownership, excellence, and continuous improvement.\nSpecific duties \nEngineering & Architecture\nDesign and develop backend services using Java (17+) or similar OO languages.\nBuild and evolve microservices and distributed, event-driven components in a cloud-native environment.\nContribute to architectural patterns that support throughput, resilience, reliability, and observability.\nDesign clean, well-documented RESTful APIs and service contracts.\nWork with relational data stores, especially PostgreSQL, and contribute to data modelling.\nDistributed Systems & Reliability\nEngineer solutions for concurrency, idempotency, fault tolerance, retries, and high availability.\nImprove system performance, reduce latency, and identify bottlenecks across services.\nBuild systems with strong observability-logs, metrics, tracing-ensuring issues can be diagnosed quickly.\nQuality & Testing\nDevelop comprehensive automated tests using frameworks such as JUnit, Mockito, Cucumber.\nParticipate in design and code reviews, helping raise engineering standards across the team.\nAdvocate for code quality, maintainability, and long-term technical health.\nDevOps, Cloud & Tooling\nUse and improve deployment pipelines and operational tooling (Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD, AWS services).\nContribute to internal frameworks, shared libraries, and engineering best practices.\nHelp shape the evolution of our platform toward a more flexible, modern architecture.\nCollaboration & Delivery\nWork in an agile environment, contributing to planning, design discussions, and iterative delivery.\nCollaborate across squads to shape technical solutions that span multiple systems.\nDocument best practices, reference architectures, and design approaches others can rely on.\nAbout you\nYou’re an engineer who thrives in a fast-paced, high-growth environment and enjoys solving complex, system-level problems.
