The Application Modernisation Platform (AMP) guides customers through the entire journey of modernising their applications - from legacy relational platforms to modern, scalable systems built on MongoDB. The App Analysis & Modelling team owns the critical first stage of this journey: building the context that powers everything downstream. The team builds code analysis tools that construct code dependency graphs and generate deep insights for codebases, giving customers a clear understanding of their existing applications before transformation begins. The team also designs schema recommendation engines that analyse signals such as existing relational schemas and query patterns to inform data modelling decisions. Our work sits at the intersection of analysis, data modelling, and AI - helping developers make confident, data-driven decisions as they transition to MongoDB.\nWe are looking for a Software Engineer who is passionate about building scalable backend systems and applications. As we expand our use of AI to power smarter analysis and recommendations, the ideal candidate will bring strong backend engineering fundamentals with the ability to contribute across the full stack. You will collaborate closely with product management and other engineering teams to design and deliver cutting-edge features that guide customers through complex modernisation journeys.\nWe are looking to speak to candidates who are based in Sydney for our hybrid working model.\nThe Ideal Candidate Will Have\n3-5+ years (Mid-Level) or 5+ years (Senior) of commercial software development experience with strong proficiency in Python and/or Java\nExperience(or extensive experience for senior candidates) designing and building scalable, high-performance APIs and backend services\nSolid understanding of relational data modelling and SQL (Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL, or similar), including schema design and query optimisation\nGood understanding of algorithms, data structures, and their time and space complexity\nExperience with frontend development using React and TypeScript, or a demonstrated willingness and ability to work across the full stack\nDegree in Computer Science or a similar field, or equivalent practical experience\nCuriosity, a positive attitude, and a drive to continue learning\nExcellent verbal and written communication skills\nNice to Have\nExperience building AI-powered features, including working with Large Language Models (LLMs) and agentic workflows\nExperience with code analysis, static analysis tooling, or building tools that traverse and interpret code structures programmatically\nFamiliarity with MongoDB\nExperience with cloud-native distributed systems (e.g., Kubernetes or similar)\nContributions to open-source projects\nPosition Expectations\nContribute high-quality, well-tested code to the App Analysis & Modelling team’s backend and frontend services\nDesign and build scalable APIs and data pipelines that power code analysis and schema recommendation features\nDrive technical design and architecture for complex features (for senior candidates), or deliver robust implementations following established designs (for mid-level candidates)\nCollaborate effectively with Product Management, other engineers, and designers to build and deliver on the product roadmap\nParticipate actively in code reviews to enforce best practices and maintain a high bar for code quality\nGive and solicit feedback on technical design documents and pull requests\nHelp troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues across the stack\nPerform tasks related to engineering process such as CI/CD, quality, and testing\nMentor and guide team members while elevating engineering best practices (for senior candidates)\nSuccess Measures\nWithin the first three months, you will have:\nFamiliarised yourself with the MongoDB database and aggregation language\nFamiliarised yourself with the backend tech stack including Python, Java, and our API infrastructure\nSet up your software development environment and begin contributing to the codebase\nStarted collaborating with your peers and contributed to code reviews and design discussions\nWithin six months, you will have:\nFamiliarised yourself with the full stack including the React/TypeScript frontend\nWorked on and delivered a large-scale feature in the product\nContributed to and helped deliver multiple product releases\nReviewed and contributed to scope and technical design documents\nWithin twelve months, you will have:\nBecome a core technical leader (for senior candidates) or an independent owner of complex features (for mid-level candidates)\nDelivered at least one large-scale feature that spans the entire tech stack\nHelped recruit and interview new members of the team\nCollaborated effectively with other teams at MongoDB on cross-functional projects\nHelp recruit, mentor, and interview new members of the team (emphasized for senior candidates)\nAbout MongoDB\nMongoDB is built for change, empowering our customers and our people to innovate at the speed of the market.
