As a Senior Engineer on the team, you will design and implement distributed-systems features that protect data and keep applications available under demanding operating conditions.\nYou will work primarily in C++ on core database code, partner with engineers across MongoDB, and shape features central to major MongoDB releases. This is an opportunity to apply distributed-systems fundamentals to problems in data consistency, recovery time, replication performance, and operability.\nWe are looking to speak to candidates who are based near one of our MongoDB office for our hybrid working model.\nWhat you will do\nDesign and implement production features across the replicated data lifecycle\nImprove restore and recovery workflows with attention to recovery time objectives\nImprove replication lag, throughput, and flow control; measure performance and prevent or resolve regressions\nWrite production-quality C++ and the unit, integration, and system tests needed to demonstrate its correctness\nUse JavaScript and Python where appropriate to extend test coverage and validate end-to-end behavior\nCollaborate with partner engineering teams and stakeholders on large, cross-functional initiatives\nInvestigate distributed-systems issues raised by customers and Technical Support, communicate findings clearly, and deliver durable fixes\nParticipate in code reviews, design reviews, and technical discussions that improve the quality of the team’s work\nInterview candidates and mentor junior engineers and interns\nWhat you bring\nRequired\nAt least five years of experience programming, debugging, and performance-tuning distributed or highly concurrent software systems\nStrong systems fundamentals, including multithreaded programming, concurrency, debugging, and performance profiling\nPractical experience with distributed-systems concepts such as replication, data consistency and durability, recovery, fault tolerance, or consensus protocols\nExperience working with complex production codebases and diagnosing problems that cross system boundaries\nStrong written and verbal technical communication skills\nA collaborative approach and the ability to make realistic assessments of project complexity and delivery risk\nPreferred\nProfessional experience developing production software in C++\nFamiliarity with database internals or core components of data-processing systems\nExperience with replication, recovery, data consistency, or Raft/another consensus protocol; direct experience with every area is not expected\nExperience writing unit, integration, and end-to-end tests in C++, JavaScript, or Python\nExperience responding to customer-impacting production issues in distributed systems\nExperience mentoring engineers or interns and contributing to technical hiring\nCandidates with additional relevant experience may be considered for more senior roles.\nWhat success looks like\nIn your first month\nBuild a working understanding of MongoDB’s replication architecture, development workflow, and testing strategy\nBegin resolving scoped bugs and contributing effectively to code reviews\nIn your first three months\nContribute production C++ code to a project targeted for an upcoming MongoDB release\nDiagnose and resolve issues identified by testing, customers, or partner teams\nIn your first six months\nTake regular ownership of code reviews and participate meaningfully in feature design reviews\nIndependently drive scoped technical work from investigation through implementation and validation\nIn your first twelve months\nLead the development of a new feature or substantial improvement from design through delivery\nHelp mentor new engineers and contribute to the team’s technical direction\nAbout MongoDB\nMongoDB is built for change, empowering our customers and our people to innovate at the speed of the market.
