Utilizing the latest advances in computer technology, the Division maintains millions of dollars of state-of-the-art automated equipment at its laboratory sites and services hospitals, nursing homes, the Montefiore Medical Group, faculty practices, and voluntary physicians' offices at more than 40 sites.\nThe Surgical Pathology Clinical Lab Technologist will perform routine and specialized technical procedures in the Surgical Pathology laboratory, including the processing, preparation, and examination support of surgical and biopsy specimens in a timely and accurate manner. Operate and maintain laboratory equipment and instrumentation in accordance with departmental protocols, quality assurance (QA), quality control (QC), and regulatory requirements. Maintain accurate records and documentation related to specimen processing and laboratory operations. Exercise independent judgment to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve technical and procedural issues while ensuring high-quality patient care and diagnostic support. Work under appropriate supervision while adhering to established safety, accreditation, and compliance standards.\nEssential Functions:\nRun tissue processor to produce paraffin blocks\nEmbed pathology specimen to view all layers\nCut Pathology specimens on rotary microtome\nStain routine Hematoxylin Eosin to view tissue section, stain routine special stains (GMS, AFB, PAS) in order to identify organism or specific tissue elements\nEnzyme histochemistry (leder esterase)\nPerform order entry and update on LISA to bill special stains\nLabel and sign out slides to assure accurate distribution of cases\nCover slipper (manual and automated), to ensure there is no water or air bubble under coverslip\nPerform on all routine work, quality control to ensure high standard in the laboratory\nRecord equipment maintenance to ensure proper operation of equipment\nPrepare solutions to ensure correct histological processing\nProcess requests from pathology residents and attendings to ensure that work order is complete\nAssist in Immunohistochemistry procedure to identify antigens\nFile paraffin blocks and slides\nPrioritize duties, tissue handling, sign out of cases\nTrouble shoot technical procedures\nPerform other duties in the department as needed\nQualifications:\nBachelor’s degree in a physical science, medical technology required\nNew York State Clinical Laboratory Technologist License required, ASCP certification (HT or HTL) preferred\nHistopathology experience preferred\nProficiency in routine histology techniques (embedding, microtomy, cryotomy, staining) preferred\nExperience with IHC staining, including antibody selection, optimization, and troubleshooting preferred\nSkilled in operating microtomes, cryostats, tissue processors, and automated stainers\nKnowledge of tissue fixation, processing parameters, and artifact recognition\nFamiliarity with digital pathology systems\nUnderstanding of CAP, CLIA, and NYSDOH regulatory requirements\nExperience maintaining accurate QC, QA, and equipment maintenance documentation\nMust have experience operating the following equipment: Rotary microtome, Laboratory Information System, Scales, Microwave, pH meter, Automated cover slipper, Microscope, Embedding Center, Tissue processor, Water bath, Cryoplate, Incubator oven\nThis position is located in the Surgical Pathology lab at the Moses campus. \nMontefiore Medical Center is an equal employment opportunity employer.
