This position provides direct supervision of the Steam and Plumbing shops and ensures continuous, safe, and efficient operation of building systems serving approximately 2,000,000 square feet of patient care, clinical, and support areas, including designated off site properties.\nResponsibilities:\nSupervises day to day operations of the Steam and Plumbing shops, including assignment of work, staff scheduling, and performance monitoring.\nDirects preventive and corrective maintenance activities for plant utilities, steam distribution systems, hot and cold water systems, pumps, valves, and related mechanical equipment.\nEnsures all work complies with applicable codes, regulatory requirements, and hospital standards (e.g., Joint Commission, NFPA, DOB, DOH).\nConducts routine inspections of mechanical spaces, utility systems, and equipment to identify issues and verify optimal performance.\nCoordinates maintenance activities to support uninterrupted patient care operations.\nAssists the Chief Engineer in planning, coordinating, and monitoring capital and operational projects.\nOversees contractor work, ensuring adherence to safety guidelines, work scope, and project timelines.\nMaintains documentation, logs, and reports required for inspections and regulatory compliance.\nSupports safety programs including lockout/tagout, confined space procedures, water management protocols, and environment of care requirements.\nProvides guidance, training, and development for shop personnel and promotes a culture of professionalism and service excellence.\nMaintains inventory of materials, supplies, and equipment; assists with budget planning and cost management initiatives.\nQualifications:\nRequired:\nHigh School Diploma or GED.\nMinimum 5 years of experience in plant operations, mechanical systems, or facilities maintenance.\nMinimum 2 years of supervisory or lead experience in a facilities, institutional, or healthcare environment.\nStrong knowledge of steam systems, plumbing systems, pumps, valves, controls, and related infrastructure.\nAbility to read and interpret mechanical drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications.\nStrong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.\nPreferred:\nExperience working in a hospital or large institutional facility.\nNYC Certificates of Fitness (e.g., S 12, S 13, P 98).\nExperience with a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).\nMontefiore Medical Center is an equal employment opportunity employer.
