API Services serves as a central integration layer, enabling digital, business banking, retail, and commercial applications to securely access capabilities such as account, transaction, and statement information.\nIn this role, you'll design, develop, and support Java-based APIs and backend services while contributing to cloud modernization and the continued evolution of the Bank's enterprise API ecosystem. You'll join a collaborative engineering environment where team members develop deep expertise in specific services while gaining exposure across multiple products and application areas. The team encourages curiosity, continuous learning, and innovation, including dedicated opportunities to explore new ideas and technologies.\nPrimary Responsibilities:\nWork independently and within the boundaries of the approved Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) to process, design, and develop applications to solve business needs and minimize risks to the Bank by writing clean and resilient code.\nDesign, develop, enhance, and support Java-based backend applications, APIs, and services supporting the Bank's enterprise API ecosystem.\nBuild and support API-driven solutions and integrations that enable communication between internal and external banking applications and downstream systems.\nDevelop new API capabilities and enhance existing services to support evolving business and technology needs.\nRegularly review pull requests, provide feedback, and execute on the change management of the request.\nAuthor organized, clean, efficient, and secure source code at an advanced level in a minimum of one programming language and apply knowledge of appropriate data structures and algorithms to solve business problems.\nUtilize source code management tools to manage and deploy code/applications, ensure compliance with SDLC policies, and support merge conflict resolution.\nIndependently analyze and critique technical and business requirements to ensure completeness, accuracy, and feasibility.\nTroubleshoot and support backend applications, services, APIs, and related platform issues across development and production environments.\nCollaborate, document, and communicate technical implementation details clearly and concisely with engineers, technical partners, and dependent teams.\nConduct code reviews, providing constructive feedback on code quality and improvements to team members.\nContribute to conversations with business and technical stakeholders regarding application architecture and technology solutions.\nContribute to modernization efforts, including the migration and evolution of existing services toward cloud-based technologies.\nSupport highly available, enterprise-scale applications and services.\nContribute to continuous improvement and innovation across the engineering organization, including the use of emerging and AI-assisted development technologies.\nUnderstand and adhere to the Company's risk and regulatory standards, policies, and controls in accordance with the Company's Risk Appetite. Identify risk-related issues needing escalation to management.\nPromote an environment that supports a culture of belonging and reflects the M&T Bank brand.\nMaintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators as applicable.\nComplete other related duties as assigned.\nSupervisory/Managerial Responsibilities:\nNo supervisory responsibilities.\nEducation and Experience Required:\nAssociate's degree and a minimum of 5 years' systems analysis and/or application development work experience or Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 3 years' systems analysis and/or application development work experience. In lieu of degree, a combined minimum of 7 years' education and/or relevant work experience, including a minimum of 3 years' systems analysis and/or application development work experience.\nAdvanced proficiency in a minimum of one relevant programming language.\nExperience developing backend applications and services using Java or a similar object-oriented programming language.\nExperience developing applications and backend services using Spring Boot or a comparable application development framework.\nExperience designing, developing, or supporting APIs, RESTful services, and API-driven architectures.\nExperience with source control and software development lifecycle tools and practices.\nExperience supporting complex enterprise applications and technology platforms.\nExperience working with cloud technologies or cloud-based application environments.\nEducation and Experience Preferred:\nA minimum of 5 years of Java development experience.\nA minimum of 5 years of Spring Boot development experience.\nAdvanced analytical skills specific to application development.\nMicrosoft Azure experience.\nStrong backend software engineering experience, including the development and support of enterprise APIs and services.\nExperience with API management, API gateway technologies, or enterprise integration platforms.\nExperience with cloud-native application development and cloud migration or modernization efforts.\nExperience supporting enterprise-scale applications with significant transaction or API volumes.\nExperience working across multiple applications, services, or integrated systems.\nExperience working with upstream and downstream technology partners and troubleshooting issues across integrated applications.\nExperience working in a collaborative Agile team environment.\nExposure to AI-assisted software development tools and development practices.\nDemonstrated troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.\nAbility to analyze complex or ambiguous technical problems, develop solutions, and communicate technical reasoning clearly.\nAbility to work autonomously while collaborating effectively across technical teams.\nAbility to learn new technologies and adapt to evolving technical environments.\nAbility to multitask on complex projects.\nStrong organizational and time management skills.\nProficient verbal and written communication skills.\nFinancial services experience preferred.\n#LI-JB3\nM&T Bank is committed to fair, competitive, and market-informed pay for our employees. The pay range for this position is $97,100.00 - $161,800.00 Annual (USD).
