The position is responsible for ensuring that aquatic services are delivered safely, effectively, and in accordance with the Muckleshoot Wellness Center policies and applicable safety requirements.\nMAJOR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES\nThis list is intended only to illustrate the various types of work that may be performed. Department Supervision and Operations\nSupervises the daily operations of the Aquatics Department.\nAssigns, directs, and monitors the work of Aquatics Coordinators, lifeguards, instructors, and other assigned staff.\nEstablishes daily work priorities and ensures appropriate staffing and pool coverage.\nCoordinates aquatic programs, schedules, staffing, and facility use.\nMonitors the quality and effectiveness of aquatic services and recommends operational improvements.\nCommunicates departmental needs, concerns, and recommendations to the Wellness Center Manager.\nCoordinates Aquatics activities with other Wellness Center departments.\n2. Lifeguard and Aquatic Duties\nPerforms lifeguard duties as part of the position’s responsibilities and as operational needs require.\nMaintains active surveillance of pool areas and responds immediately to emergencies.\nEnforces pool safety rules and MIT Wellness Center aquatic policies.\nPerforms water rescues and provides emergency response, CPR, first aid, and other lifesaving interventions within the scope of certification.\nMaintains required lifeguard certifications and participates in required continuing education.\nAssists with pool opening and closing procedures.\nPerforms or assists with pool water testing, chemical monitoring, and other routine pool operational requirements.\nMay teach, assist with, or oversee aquatic programs and activities based on operational needs.\nDemonstrates appropriate lifeguarding techniques and safety procedures during staff training.\n3. Staff Supervision and Development\nProvides direction, coaching, and feedback to Aquatics employees.\nMonitors employee performance and addresses performance concerns in accordance with established policies.\nParticipates in employee evaluations.\nParticipates in the recruitment, interviewing, selection, onboarding, and training of Aquatics employees.\nMakes recommendations to the Wellness Center Manager regarding hiring, promotion, discipline, and termination.\nDevelops and coordinates employee training and cross-training.\nEnsures staff maintain required certifications and qualifications.\nEnsures employees understand and consistently follow aquatic safety procedures and Wellness Center policies.\n4. Aquatic Programming\nPlans and coordinates aquatic programs for various ages, abilities, and populations.\nDevelops program schedules and recommends changes based on participation, staffing, facility availability, and community needs.\nCoordinates swimming lessons, aquatic exercise, recreational activities, special programs, and other aquatic services.\nEvaluates program effectiveness and recommends improvements.\nEnsures programs are appropriately staffed and conducted safely.\n5. Safety and Compliance\nOversees compliance with applicable aquatic safety, sanitation, health, and regulatory requirements.\nEnsures staff follow established safety procedures.\nMonitors pool conditions, water quality, chemical levels, and surrounding facility conditions.\nEnsures appropriate documentation is maintained for inspections, incidents, certifications, training, and safety activities.\nReviews emergency procedures with staff and conducts or coordinates emergency preparedness training.\nInvestigates and follows up on safety concerns and incident reports.\nImplements corrective actions when safety or compliance issues are identified.\n6. Budget and Resource Management\nAssists the Wellness Center Manager with development and administration of the Aquatics Department budget.\nMonitors departmental supplies, equipment, and operational resources.\nMakes recommendations regarding equipment purchases, repairs, replacement, and maintenance.\nMonitors expenditures within established budget guidelines.\nIdentifies equipment and resource needs and communicates recommendations to management.\n7. Customer Service and Conflict Resolution\nEstablishes and promotes professional customer service standards within the Aquatics Department.\nResponds to member questions, concerns, and complaints involving aquatic programs, scheduling, safety, and pool rules.\nResolves routine concerns and escalates issues requiring management involvement.\nEnforces aquatic policies consistently and professionally.\nPromotes a safe, welcoming, respectful, and culturally responsive environment.\n8. Communication and Administrative Responsibilities\nMaintains accurate departmental records and documentation.\nPrepares reports and correspondence as requested.\nCommunicates staffing, operational, safety, and program concerns to the Wellness Center Manager.\nAttends staff, management, and departmental meetings as required.\nParticipates on committees and workgroups as assigned.\n9. Because of the Tribe's commitment to community service and the well-being of its members, each employee may be expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties from time to time. Such duties may or may not be related to their regular responsibilities.\nEDUCATION - EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING FOR POSITION\nRequired:\nHigh School Diploma\nMinimum four years of progressively responsible aquatics experience.\nMinimum two years of supervisory or lead experience in an aquatic environment.\nCurrent Lifeguard certification.\nCurrent CPR and First Aid certification.\nPreferred:\nCertified Pool Operator (CPO) certification.\nAquatic Exercise Instructor certification.\nWater Safety Instructor or equivalent certification.\nAdditional aquatic management or supervisory training. \nSPECIFIC SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES REQUIRED FOR POSITION\nSkills:\nExcellent verbal and written communication skills.\nSkilled in performing, training and evaluation procedures for proper lifeguarding and first aid administration\nSkilled in maintaining or correcting chemical and water level in pools\nAbility:\nAbility to Supervise, motivate, and develop employees.\nAbility to remain calm, professional, and decisive during emergencies or difficult situations.\nAbility to work effectively with people of different ages and abilities.\nKnowledge:\nKnowledge of aquatic safety, emergency response, and pool operations.\nKnowledge of aquatic risk management and emergency procedures.\nPHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS\nFrequently swimming, sitting, standing, and walking for up to one hour at time, Occasionally lifting and carrying or dragging up to 40 lbs and balancing and climbing; Occasionally bending, crouching, kneeling and twisting; Frequently reaching, pushing/pulling, grasping, and using fingers; Frequently talking and continuously seeing (near and far) and hearing.
