In close partnership with clients and the Client Integration Team, the Portfolio Underwriter leads ongoing portfolio monitoring, client reviews, and program evolution - using claims, engineering, exposure, and financial insights to address emerging risks, strengthen retention, and optimize long-term outcomes.\nAs an internal champion and market-facing thought leader, the Portfolio Underwriter collaborates across underwriting, product, operations, and business development to influence product strategy, improve processes, and deliver differentiated solutions. By balancing client advocacy with underwriting discipline, the role ensures programs remain market-relevant, compliant, and financially sound while creating sustained value for both HSB and its clients.\nEducation and Experience\nBachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience is required\n5+ years of P&C insurance/reinsurance experience is required;3+ years of underwriting experience is preferred\n\nDemonstrated understanding of commercial and personal lines insurance and reinsurance coverage, concepts, principles, exposures and processes to drive profitable results\nDemonstrated ability to translate large data analysis into actionable decisions\nDemonstrated understanding of rate development (pure premium), price segmentation & detecting leading loss trends\nPast experience with responsibility for achieving profit and growth targets for a book a business\nDemonstrated experience with negotiation and conflict resolution\nExhibited ability to develop creative and unique solutions\nHSB product knowledge and previous experience and familiarity with HSB is desired\nKnowledge and Skills\nFinancial statement (business finance) knowledge and analysis\nGeneral insurance/reinsurance industry knowledge\nPresentation skills\nStrong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills\nPortfolio analysis\nHSB product knowledge\nOrganization and time management skills\nConsultative and strategic negotiation skills\nStrong project management skills to manage multiple concurrent projects and issues\nPC skills (Excel, PowerPoint, Power BI, and Word)\nDetail-oriented\nAction-oriented with strong analytical, actuarial, statistical, innovation, and persuasion skills to influence change\nNaturally curious and inquisitive to identify issues and solve problems\nResourceful in order to research issues, assemble support, and recommend creative solutions to underwriting issues\nAt The Hartford Steam Boiler, a subsidiary of Munich Re, we see Diversity and Inclusion as a solution to the challenges and opportunities all around us.
