Nanyang Technological University, Singapore

Adjunct Associate Professor

ASE, in collaboration with CoHASS, invites applications for an Adjunct Associate Professor position at NTU. The appointee will develop and deliver an innovative interdisciplinary undergraduate elective course using wine as an integrative case study to demonstrate the interconnectedness of Earth systems, agricultural and viticultural landscapes, human society, history, culture, and commerce. The course will draw on faculty expertise and students from across NTU's colleges, including CoS, CoHASS, and NBS. In addition to the undergraduate course, the appointee will contribute to executive education programmes and engagement activities that communicate our research to non-specialist audiences and external stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and deliver an interdisciplinary undergraduate elective course drawing on connections between environmental science, climate change, land use, cultural geography, economics, and society, using viticulture and the global wine industry as a sustained integrative case study.
  • Develop curriculum and teaching materials that make ASE research - including work on climate variability, soil science, landscape change, and natural hazards - accessible and relevant to students from diverse academic backgrounds.
  • Develop curriculum and teaching materials that draw on CoHASS disciplines - including cultural geography, history, anthropology, and the social study of food and consumption - to illuminate wine as a lens for understanding human societies and their relationship with the natural world.
  • Contribute to executive education programmes addressing the intersection of environmental change, land use, culture and fine wine, with a focus on the Asia-Pacific region.
  • Support engagement activities with external stakeholders, including prospective donors and industry partners, through curated events, masterclasses, and dinners that communicate ASE and CoHASS science in compelling and accessible formats.
  • Collaborate with faculty across ASE, CoHASS, NBS, and other NTU schools to strengthen interdisciplinary educational programming in this topic and build cross-school academic relationships.

Requirements

Essential:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a discipline relevant to ASE or CoHASS, together with significant professional experience in the wine industry and demonstrated advanced expertise in wine at a senior level. Candidates should hold a recognised international industry credential (e.g., Master of Wine or equivalent) or possess an equivalent combination of professional standing, industry achievements, and domain expertise that reflects comparable mastery in the field.
  • Minimum 15 years of professional experience spanning the commercial, communications, and educational dimensions of the wine industry, including substantial direct experience in the Asia-Pacific market.
  • Demonstrated track record as a wine educator, including design and delivery of formal accredited courses at professional or institutional levels (e.g. WSET Level 3+ or equivalent).
  • Substantial experience as a communicator and writer for both specialist and non-specialist audiences, including a published portfolio of articles, reports, or books in high-quality trade or general media outlets.
  • Proven experience designing and hosting high-level events, masterclasses, and educational programmes for senior professional and membership audiences.
  • Established professional network within the regional and international wine industry, including active ties to wine-producing regions and industry bodies across Asia, Australasia, and Europe.

Preferred:

  • Demonstrated intellectual engagement with wine as a cultural, environmental, and economic phenomenon, evidenced through published books, industry research, or extended analytical writing.
  • Experience operating within or alongside academic or research institutions, including guest lecturing, mentorship of emerging professionals, or collaboration with scientific communities.
  • Experience within key Asian wine markets, particularly Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, and Greater China.
  • Experience translating complex scientific or technical content for lay audiences in formal and informal settings.

Application Procedure

Application package should include:

Cover Letter (what you have to offer and why you chose NTU) Full Curriculum Vitae (CV) including evidence of teaching and publication. Writing samples or evidence of communications work (e.g., published articles or books)

All applications and materials submitted will be held in strict confidence.
