The School of Humanities invites suitable candidates to apply for a faculty position in Singapore Sign Language (SgSL) in the Centre of Modern Languages at the rank of Lecturer.

The Centre for Modern Languages (CML) is a diverse department offering 15 Asian and European languages (Arabic, Bahasa Indonesia, Chinese, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Malay, Singapore Sign Language, Spanish, Tamil, Thai and Vietnamese). The centre places great importance on enhancing the intercultural knowledge and skills of the learners as well as their linguistic competence. It offers Minor and Second Major in Modern Languages too.

The Centre and School are part of the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, which aims to be Asia's leading centre for innovative, interdisciplinary humanities, arts and social science teaching and research. At home in a technological university, CoHASS's scholars and teachers aim to shape the human future by connecting systems of knowledge from continents and disciplines.

We are seeking a dedicated and qualified individual to join our faculty as a Lecturer in Singapore Sign Language (SGSL) on a three-year contract. The successful candidate will play a key role in advancing SGSL education and research, and in strengthening engagement with the Deaf community in Singapore. The successful applicant will teach introductory to advanced SgSL courses to tertiary students. Developing pedagogical materials, incorporating technological innovations into the curriculum and knowledge of current trends in second/foreign language teaching methodologies will be an added advantage.

The successful candidate is expected to:

  • Teach Singapore Sign Language (SGSL) at beginner through advanced levels.
  • Design and develop curriculum informed by sound pedagogical principles.
  • Oversee the development and expansion of the SGSL Bank as a key resource for teaching and learning.
  • Collaborate closely with The Singapore Association for the Deaf (SADeaf) and actively engage with the Deaf community to ensure relevance, inclusivity, and authenticity in teaching and curriculum development.
  • Work as part of a team of language lecturers within the Centre for Modern Languages to contribute to cross-language initiatives, pedagogical innovation, and community engagement.

Requirements

Candidates who have the following qualifications are encouraged to apply:

  • · Postgraduate Qualification in SgSL as a foreign language or in related studies.
  • · Native proficiency in SgSL.
  • · Demonstrated familiarity with the practices, values, and culture of Deaf communities.
  • · Experience and demonstrated excellence in teaching SgSL, preferably at tertiary level.
  • · Experience in developing SgSL materials, including web-based materials is an advantage.
  • · Good command of English.
