We are seeking four talented and highly motivated Research Fellows to contribute to a research programme on market design for future low-carbon power systems. The roles will support the development of next-generation electricity market, coordination, and decision-support frameworks that can jointly address energy adequacy, system stability, carbon objectives, flexibility provision, and heterogeneous resource participation. The Research Fellows will work on topics including market clearing and pricing mechanisms, flexibility and storage coordination, distributed energy resource (DER) aggregation, strategic interactions among market participants, AI-enabled market simulation, and the integration of market design with power system planning and operation. Through analytical modelling, optimisation, simulation, and data-driven methods, the positions will contribute to the development of reliable, affordable, resilient, and sustainable energy systems, supporting NTU’s mission in sustainability, digital innovation, and future energy transition.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct cutting-edge research on future low-carbon power systems, electricity markets, and energy flexibility coordination.

  • Develop analytical, optimisation, simulation, and data-driven models for electricity market design and power system operation under high renewable penetration.

  • Design and evaluate market mechanisms for energy storage, distributed energy resources, demand-side flexibility, and low-carbon energy integration.

  • Develop AI-enabled and computational methods for power system planning, operational decision-making, and market simulation.

  • Perform modelling, simulation, and quantitative analysis of power systems, integrated energy systems, and electricity market operations.

  • Collaborate with academic researchers, industry partners, and government stakeholders on research activities and technical discussions.

  • Contribute to the preparation of research proposals, technical reports, journal papers, and conference publications.

  • Present research outcomes at project meetings, academic conferences, workshops, and industry engagement activities.

  • Support the supervision and mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students involved in research projects.

  • Assist in developing research software tools, datasets, and simulation platforms related to future energy systems and electricity markets.

  • Participate in interdisciplinary research activities related to sustainability, digitalisation, and energy transition.

  • Contribute to the establishment of international research collaborations and external funding opportunities.

Job Requirements:

  • PhD qualification degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, and Information Engineering.

  • Strong research background in at least one of the following areas: electricity market design, power system operation and planning, energy storage, smart grids, distributed energy resources, flexibility coordination, optimisation, or reinforcement learning.

  • Experience in analytical modelling, optimisation, simulation, machine learning, reinforcement learning, or data-driven methods for power systems and markets.

  • Familiarity with electricity markets, renewable energy integration, low-carbon energy systems, and future power system challenges is advantageous.

  • Experience with programming and computational tools such as Python, Jax, or related simulation and optimisation platforms.

  • Experience with power systems, electricity markets, or energy simulation tools is advantageous.

  • Good publication record in high-quality journals or conferences related to power systems, power markets, or reinforcement learning.

  • Strong analytical, quantitative, and problem-solving skills.

  • Self-motivated and able to work both independently and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary research environment.

  • Good organisational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple research tasks and meet project timelines.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including scientific writing and technical presentation abilities.

  • Strong interest in contributing to the establishment and development of a new research group at NTU.
