Application Support Engineer

We’re looking for an Application Support Engineer to join our Systems Operations team, reporting to the Senior Director, Systems Operations.

In this role, you’ll provide hands-on operational support for critical Nasdaq applications and data-processing services. Working primarily in Linux/Unix environments, you’ll monitor production systems, investigate alerts and processing issues, manage operational work queues, respond to incidents, and help ensure services meet strict availability and processing SLAs.

This is a production-focused application support role rather than an infrastructure or service-desk position. You’ll work as part of a globally distributed operations team and collaborate with Development, Infrastructure, Client Services, exchanges, data vendors, network providers, and other technical teams.

You’ll fit right in if you’re collaborative, methodical, comfortable working under pressure, and able to analyse information from multiple sources to identify what has failed, assess its impact, and determine the appropriate recovery or escalation path.

What You’ll Do

• Operate and support critical production applications and data-processing services in Linux/Unix environments.
• Perform real-time monitoring of application health, data flows, batch processing, alert generation, capacity, and service availability.
• Investigate monitoring alerts and production issues, restoring service where possible and escalating to the appropriate technical teams when required.
• Own and progress operational tickets through investigation, resolution, escalation, documentation, and closure, ensuring that priorities and status updates remain accurate.
• Monitor and troubleshoot end-to-end data-processing workflows, including client uploads, market and reference data feeds, file transfers, data transformation, alert generation, and downstream availability.
• Execute documented startup, shutdown, recovery, scheduling, backup, restoration, and reprocessing procedures.
• Perform approved production deployments and configuration changes using established change-management processes.
• Complete post-deployment verification to confirm that changes have produced the expected result and have not adversely affected production services.
• Respond to production incidents, contributing to service restoration, technical investigation, escalation, event timelines, root-cause analysis, and remediation activities.
• Troubleshoot application performance and connectivity issues across the application, operating system, storage, device, and network layers.
• Work with Development, Infrastructure, Client Services, exchanges, data vendors, and network providers to investigate and resolve operational issues.
• Perform data or alert reprocessing when required, including validating inputs, protecting existing production data, monitoring processing, and verifying the resulting output.
• Provide clear shift handovers to regional teams, ensuring continuity of outstanding alerts, incidents, tickets, deployments, and other operational work.
• Create and maintain runbooks, troubleshooting procedures, deployment instructions, and knowledge-base documentation.
• Identify opportunities to automate repetitive tasks, reduce false alarms, improve monitoring coverage, and increase the reliability and supportability of production services.
• Follow incident, change, access-control, security, and operational-risk procedures when working on production systems.
• Participate in a rostered weekend on-call rotation and occasional out-of-hours production work.

What You’ll Bring

• A degree or diploma in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
• Three or more years of experience in application support, technical operations, production support, trading technology, data-processing, network operations, or a related environment.
• A solid understanding of Linux/Unix environments, including common command-line tools, filesystem and process management, log analysis, and basic Bash or shell scripting.
• The ability to troubleshoot application behaviour across operating system, process, storage, device, and network layers.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to combine information from monitoring alerts, logs, tickets, system behaviour, and stakeholder reports.
• The ability to identify correlations between discrete events, assess business and service impact, and contribute effectively to root-cause investigations.
• Experience working with monitoring, ticketing, incident-management, and change-management tools and processes.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate technical information clearly and accurately to technical teams, business groups, clients, and client representatives.
• Strong organisational skills, with the ability to prioritize competing demands while maintaining accurate records and following controlled operational procedures.
• The ability to work calmly and methodically during production incidents and periods of increased operational pressure.
• A collaborative approach and willingness to develop knowledge across a complex application and data-processing environment.
• Availability to participate in rostered weekend on-call support and occasional planned out-of-hours work.

Nice to Have

• Experience supporting applications used in financial markets, trade surveillance, market data, or other regulated production environments.
• Experience with Git or Bitbucket-based deployment and configuration workflows.
• Knowledge of monitoring and observability tools such as Zabbix, Datadog, or Splunk.
• Experience with Jira or a comparable operational ticket-management platform.
• Experience with Python, Perl, or more advanced Bash/shell scripting.
• Familiarity with AWS-hosted applications, containers, or hybrid cloud and on-premises environments.
• Experience supporting file-based or batch-oriented data-processing pipelines.
• Understanding of ITIL-aligned incident, problem, and change-management practices.
• Relevant certifications in ITIL, Linux, AWS, networking, or a related technical discipline.

This position is based in Sydney and offers a hybrid working arrangement with at least two days per week in the office, subject to change.

The role supports globally delivered production services and works closely with operations and technical teams across multiple regions. It includes participation in a rostered weekend on-call rotation and occasional planned work outside normal business hours.
