Together, we are superpowered.\nNational Grid is hiring an Engineering Enablement Lead on a permanent basis. This position is based in Warwick.This role operates under a hybrid working model. Hybrid work expectations are subject to business needs and company policy.\nAbout the role\nAs Engineering Enablement Lead, you'll set the engineering system that our products and Platforms-owned platforms are built and run on. You'll own the standard, toolchains and paved roads that engineering teams use, and will be accountable for the quality, reliability and security of the way software is built in the Electric Distribution business. This is a standard-setting role with no direct reports: it leads through the wider engineering community and through framework partners engaged on specific initiatives, and its authority comes from credibility rather than reporting line.\nWhat you'll do\nEngineering standards and paved roads\nOwn and publish the engineering playbook covering secure coding, branching, code review, dependency management and the paved-road templates teams start from.\nDefine and maintain the reference CI/CD pipelines, with security, quality and compliance gates automated into them rather than applied manually.\nQuality engineering and test\nOwn the test strategy: the balance of unit, integration, contract and end-to-end testing, coverage expectations, and the quality gates that block a release.\nOwn test data and test environment standards, and report defect escape rates and rework to leadership each quarter.\nReliability and observability\nDefine the observability standard covering logging, metrics, distributed tracing and alerting, and the service level objectives every production service must publish.\nEmbed site reliability engineering practice, including error budgets, on-call expectations and blameless post-incident review, and own the incident learning loop.\nSecure engineering\nOwn the secure engineering standard jointly with Cyber Security, covering secrets management, dependency and supply chain scanning, and vulnerability remediation timescales.\nDeveloper experience and toolchain\nOwn the engineering toolchain covering source control, pipelines, artefact management, test and observability tooling, including selection, cost, licensing and adoption.\nMeasure developer experience and engineering flow using lead time, deployment frequency, change failure rate and time to restore, and publish improvement targets against them.\nCommunity leadership and partner initiatives\nLead the engineering practice through influence rather than line management, building commitment to the standard across the wider engineering community.\nBuild and sustain the wider engineering community across product and platform teams - guilds, practice forums and internal engineering events - as the primary route by which the standard is adopted.\nRun the engineering community of practice, own the engineering career pathway and hiring standard, and act as technical conscience for engineering hires across the function.\nDirect framework partners engaged on specific engineering initiatives: define the outcome, the standard they must work to, the acceptance criteria, and the handover back into the community.\nPartner with the Product Management, Solution Architecture and Delivery Orchestration Leads so that the four practice standards form one coherent operating model.\nAbout you\nExtensive software engineering leadership experience in a complex, technology-enabled organisation, with credibility among practising engineers.\nDeep practical knowledge of DevSecOps, CI/CD, infrastructure as code and secure engineering practice at scale.\nProven track record of defining and embedding engineering standards, paved roads and playbooks across multiple teams.\nStrong background in quality engineering and test strategy, including test automation, test data and environment management.\nExperience of embedding site reliability engineering practice, including service level objectives, error budgets and observability.\nExperience of selecting, governing and driving adoption of engineering toolchains, including the cost and licensing position.\nWorking knowledge of Azure cloud-native application platforms, microservices, event-driven architectures and serverless workloads.\nExperience of measuring and improving developer experience and engineering flow using evidence rather than assertion.\nAbility to successfully operate at a senior manager level, forming strong relationships and engagement as needed across all levels of the Business Entity.\nExperience of working within a heavily matrixed organisation, including delivery through system integrators and managed service partners.\nWhat you'll get\nCompetitive Salary, based on capability and experience\nBonus of up to 30% based on personal and company performance\nAdditional benefits:\nA competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%\nFlexible benefits such as a cycle scheme, share incentive plan, technology schemes\nAccess to apps such as digital GP service for round the clock access to GP video consultations and NHS repeat prescriptions, wellbeing app to support your health and fitness\nAccess to Work + Family Space, providing support and resources for work and family life, including paid emergency childcare and eldercare\nMore Information\nThe closing date for this vacancy is 20th November.
