SAAO is the premier optical/infrared research facility on the African continent, with global research and outreach collaborations and contributing human capacity development for South Africa.\n\nPosition: IT Support Technician\nBusiness Unit: South Africa Astronomical Observatory (SAAO)\nLocation: Cape Town, Western Cape\n\nPosition Details\nPosition Summary:\nThe South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) is seeking qualified candidates for the position of IT Support Technician\n\nKey Responsibilities:\nSupport desktop computer, laptops and , as well as support of remote office.\nTroubleshoot basic network connectivity\nVideo conferencing experience, particularly around setup, maintenance and troubleshooting.\nPrinter Support\nStandby Duties in Cape Town and Sutherland\nInstallation of hardware for desktops and laptops\nInstall hardware and software on Linux, windows\nInstallation of network equipment\nResponding to tickets on the ticketing system\nWi-Fi support\nSupport desktop application like MS Office and others\n\nAdditional Notes:\nADDITIONAL EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE & PERSONAL QUALITIES:\n\nStrong interpersonal and communication skills.\nAttention to detail, ability to see a task through to completion, passion for excellent client service, self-motivated, able to work unsupervised, curious, persistent, dedicated.\nA+, Net+ certification\nAbility to solve problems quickly and automate processes.\nIn-depth troubleshooting of technical problems as well as solving of more complex software and hardware problems.\nA good understanding of networking. \nWorks well alone or on a team (must be able to work well in a team)\nTechnical certification (e.g: Microsoft certification, Linux certification, other professional qualifications)\n\nRequirements\nQualification:\nNational Diploma in IT or Related Field\n\nExperience:\n2 years’ experience as a support technician\nExperience with troubleshooting, setting up, and managing Windows and Linux machines\nExperience with VPN server and client configuration (across different platforms), IP Phones (SIP), printer configurations, configuring and troubleshooting cloud-based Office 365 Suite as well as local installation.\nExperience SSO, SSH.\n\nKnowledge, Skills and Abilities:\nWindows (7,10,11)\nLinux\nApple Mac OS\nEmail systems like Gmail and outlook or Zimbra\nVirtualisation\nDNS\nDHCP\n\nHow to Apply\nClosing Date: Friday, 13 Nov 2026\n\nThe NRF website provides more details on the initiatives and activities.
