Nationwide Building Society is a UK mutual financial institution headquartered in Swindon, England, providing mortgages, current accounts, savings, credit cards and business banking to its members. Owned by its members rather than shareholders, it is the largest building society in the world, operates a national branch network and acquired Virgin Money UK in 2024. Its openings span software, data and integration engineering, analytics, compliance, risk and audit roles, mortgage technical delivery, customer support and branch management, mainly in Swindon, London, Northampton and Glasgow.

As a Product Owner in Customer Servicing, you’ll focus on the Colleague Servicing Value Stream and the technology that enables customer-facing colleagues to serve customers effectively. You’ll make critical decisions about the design, build, operation and improvement of key applications, ensuring that product outcomes support Nationwide’s strategy and deliver measurable value for customers, colleagues and the Society.

You’ll be accountable for defining and maintaining a prioritised roadmap and backlog, balancing service management, business outcomes, risk, technical capability, capacity and cost. Working across product, technology and business change, you’ll create clarity around priorities, lead outcome-focused collaboration and support the safe adoption of change into service.

We are happy to consider flexible working approaches to help you perform at your best.

At Nationwide we offer hybrid working wherever possible. More rewarding relationships are supported through our hybrid approach, bringing colleagues together across our UK wide estate, whilst also supporting generous access to home working. We value our time in the office to solve problems, to learn, and to feel connected.

For this role, you'll be based at your nearest regional office or hub. We value time spent together to connect with colleagues for collaboration so there will be a regular requirement to attend our Swindon site approximately once per quarter. If you are based at an office location, you'll be expected to meet our hybrid working requirement of at least two days a week, or 40% of your working time if part-time, in the office. If your application is successful, your hiring manager will provide further details on how this works.

Whilst these locations are where we are primarily looking to fill the role, if you’re an internal applicant based in a different location we would welcome your application and if successful, your hiring manager will provide further details on how this could work for this specific role. You can also find out more about our approach to hybrid working here.

Nationwide is committed to the redeployment of our employees impacted by change, as such applications for redeployment candidates will be prioritised in this recruitment process.

If you’re a colleague on long-term absence (for example, on parental leave) or a temporary worker, please use your personal email address to submit an application.

What you’ll be doing

You’ll work with stakeholders to understand customer, colleague and business needs, shape the product vision and maintain a prioritised, value-led roadmap and backlog. You’ll assess new demand using evidence, strategic alignment, risk, benefits, delivery capacity and cost, making clear decisions and explaining trade-offs.

Working closely with business analysts, engineers, architects, delivery and change colleagues, you’ll define outcomes, clarify requirements, support planning and ensure solutions are adopted safely into service. You’ll monitor product performance and delivery progress, manage risks and issues, and identify opportunities for continuous improvement. You’ll also act as a key point of contact for product direction, delivery and service matters, building relationships and keeping stakeholders informed.

About you

As a minimum requirement, you’ll have:

  • Proven experience of owning and prioritising a product roadmap and backlog, translating strategy and customer needs into clear outcomes and deliverable plans

  • Experience of assessing demand and making evidence-based prioritisation decisions using value, risk, strategic alignment, capacity and cost

  • A track record of building relationships, communicating product vision and influencing business and technical stakeholders at different levels

  • Experience of working with multidisciplinary teams, including business analysis, engineering, architecture, delivery and business change, to deliver end-to-end solutions

  • Demonstrable customer focus, with experience of using insight, feedback and performance measures to improve product outcomes and value

  • Experience of identifying and managing delivery, operational or technology risks, taking ownership of issues and adjusting priorities when circumstances change

  • Commercial awareness and the ability to manage a varied, fast-paced workload, maintain momentum and escalate effectively when support is required

Our customer first behaviours put customers and members at the heart of how we work together. They are the set of behaviours that every colleague needs to display, in every role:

  • Feel what customers feel - We step into our customers’ shoes, using their feedback and insights to empathise with them and to understand their needs, so that every decision we make starts and finishes with our customers in mind

  • Say it straight - We are brave in speaking out and saying what we think - we’re honest and direct with good intent, openly sharing diverse perspectives to reach the best conclusions and using language everyone can understand

  • Push for better - We don’t settle for mediocrity, we challenge the status quo, taking responsibility for continuous improvement and personal development

  • Get it done - We prioritise what will have the greatest impact, we are decisive, and we take accountability for delivering brilliant customer outcomes

You can strengthen your application by showing how our customer first behaviours resonate with you, and where you may have already demonstrated these.

Banking - but fairer, more rewarding, and for the good of society

We forge our own path at Nationwide.

As a mutual, we’re owned by our members - those customers who bank, save or have a mortgage with us. We challenge the financial sector status quo. If you’re inspired by fairer finances, passionate about making a meaningful impact, and truly care about our customers, you’re one of us.

At Nationwide, you are challenged to grow and rewarded for doing so. Valued. Recognised. Inspired to be your best. As a community, we want our working lives to count. As a team, we celebrate what we achieve. As a standard-setter, we work for the good of customers, communities, and broader society.

We are purpose-driven. Uncompromisingly customer. Unstoppably Nationwide.
