Overview

The Peer Workforce Coordinator supports USU Extension's peer support workforce development programs, which train Certified Peer Support Specialists (CPSS) and Family Peer Support Specialists (FPSS) and help them move into the behavioral health workforce through internships and apprenticeships.

This position has two primary functions: (1) guiding peer support specialists trained by USU Extension through their internships and apprenticeships, including tracking hours, helping them obtain continuing education units (CEUs), and processing payments; and (2) organizing and coordinating peer support trainings and their logistics. The coordinator also tracks data on peers and trainings, recruits and mentors peers placed in internships at partner agencies (including through the Utah Rural Health Transformation Program), and has the opportunity to develop into a peer trainer.

Responsibilities

  • Internship and apprenticeship support (primary function). Guides peer support specialists trained by USU Extension through their internships and apprenticeships. Tracks supervised and work hours, verifies documentation, monitors each peer's progress toward program and certification requirements, and serves as their day-to-day point of contact for questions and problem-solving.
  • CEUs and payments (primary function). Helps peers obtain and document continuing education units (CEUs) and certification requirements. Processes stipends and other payments to interns, apprentices, and trainers, preparing purchasing and payment documents and working with the department business office to ensure accuracy and timeliness.
  • Training coordination and logistics (primary function). Organizes and coordinates peer support trainings (e.g., CPSS, FPSS, and CEU workshops), including scheduling, venues, registration, virtual platforms, materials, trainer arrangements, travel, and catering. Serves as the on-site or virtual point of contact during trainings.
  • Peer trainer development. Co-facilitates peer support trainings and, with appropriate preparation and approval, may become a peer trainer who delivers trainings independently.
  • Data tracking and reporting. Maintains accurate records and databases on peers and trainings, including enrollment, attendance, hours, CEUs, completion, certification, and employment outcomes, as well as training evaluations. Prepares data summaries and reports for grant funders and program leadership.
  • Peer recruitment for internships. Identifies and recruits peer support specialists to participate in internships at partner agencies, including rural host agencies through the Utah Rural Health Transformation Program (RHTP), and helps match peers with placements.
  • Peer mentorship. Provides mentorship and support to peer interns and apprentices through regular check-ins, professional development guidance, and help navigating workplace challenges. Coordinates with host agency supervisors and program coaches.
  • Communication and outreach. Develops flyers, emails, newsletters, and social media content to recruit participants for trainings, internships, and apprenticeships.
  • Partner liaison. Serves as a liaison with peers, trainers, partner agencies, and state certification and training entities (e.g., the Utah Department of Health and Human Services).
  • Administrative support. Maintains program files, correspondence, and training materials; may maintain content in learning management systems (e.g., Canvas) and on the program website.
  • May train and direct student employees, volunteers, and/or graduate students.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate degree plus two years of related work experience; or a bachelor's degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of education plus experience is required.
    • Related fields include social work, psychology, human services, public health, health education, or a closely related field.
  • Current certification in good standing as a Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS) or Family Peer Support Specialist (FPSS) in Utah
  • Access to reliable transportation and the ability to travel occasionally within Utah

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working as a peer support specialist in a behavioral health, healthcare, or community setting.
  • Experience coordinating trainings, events, or educational programs.
  • Experience with internship or apprenticeship programs, or with tracking certification or licensure hours.
  • Experience facilitating trainings or groups, or interest in becoming a peer trainer.
  • Experience processing payments, purchasing, or other fiscal documents at a university or public agency.
  • Experience maintaining program data or records for grant-funded projects.

    This position is based at the USU Extension office in Salt Lake County. Occasional in-state travel is required to support trainings and to visit peer interns and apprentices at partner agencies, including rural host agencies; some trips may involve overnight stays. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required to accommodate trainings and events.Employees typically work in an office environment and are protected from weather conditions or contaminants, but not necessarily occasional temperature changes. However, in certain instances employees may work outdoors and may not be protected from weather conditions. Employees could be exposed to hazardous chemicals. Employees nearly continuously sit and often use repetitive hand motion (such as typing). Bending and stooping is occasionally required. Employees nearly continuously listen, hear, and talk.
