Much more than consultants, we’re allies and guides on our clients’ digital journey - helping them to grow their business and delight their customers through intuitive, thoughtfully designed technology. As true partners, we prepare our clients for the opportunities in front of them, help them achieve their goals, and quickly deliver value for their customers. We do this by solving problems in creative ways across strategy, design, and technology.\nAt Nerdery, we’re not defined by our job titles but by the impact we make. You’ll work directly and closely with some of the world’s best brands to help create innovative digital products that serve everyone. As Nerds, our insight, innovation, and expertise are celebrated, and our growth is not only encouraged but expected. Being a Nerd means stepping up and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.\nWe are looking for a PRINCIPAL SOFTWARE ENGINEER (Integrations) to join our team! We invite you to check out the details below and consider whether becoming a Nerd is the next step in your career journey.\nThe Principal Software Engineer is the technical lead and a full-time hands-on builder for a multi-tenant ERP connector framework for Fleetio, a fleet maintenance SaaS platform. The first adapters are SAP S/4HANA Cloud and Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central. The Principal owns the architecture and its early decisions (platform, stack, cloud setup), leads three senior engineers and a QA engineer, and is accountable for posting integrity: financial data moves between Fleetio and customer ERPs with no duplicates and a complete audit trail. They are the main technical voice to Fleetio’s product, integrations and infrastructure teams, and hand the framework over to Fleetio’s integrations team at the end of the engagement.\nRequirements:\nUndergraduate or graduate degree in a computer related field, coding bootcamp certificate, OR a thorough demonstration of self-taught software development skills\n8+ years of software development experience\n2-3+ years of application software architecture experience, including familiarity with common design patterns and approaches for solving typical application problems for their discipline \nAbility to write complex software and demonstrated proficiency in explaining the “why” behind code\nStrong technical communication acumen; can explain complex technical problems to technical and non-technical audiences (clients, project members, team members, peers, etc.)\nStrong understanding of the development process and ability to maintain an iterative approach throughout the project lifecycle \nArchitected and shipped production system-to-system integrations or an integration platform. A web-app architect isn’t enough.\nDeep data-integrity design: idempotency, outbox/ledger patterns, at-least-once delivery, reconciliation.\nMulti-tenant SaaS design: tenant isolation (row-level security), per-tenant secrets, kill switches.\nAWS and IaC design responsibility, not just usage.\nFluent in Python and/or TypeScript/Node, and comfortable reading Ruby/Rails.\nHas led a client-facing technical engagement under a hard date.\nDemonstrated experience designing and architecting scalable, reliable, and maintainable backend systems and system-to-system integrations, with a strong understanding of distributed systems, architectural trade-offs, and production-level design decisions.\nDemonstrated hands-on experience integrating AI-assisted development tools into daily software engineering workflows, including code generation, debugging, testing, refactoring, and technical problem-solving.\nAbility to effectively leverage AI development tools through structured context management, clear technical specifications, prompt engineering, and iterative validation of AI-generated solutions.\nPreferred:\nHas experience or demonstrates the ability to participate in client pitches\nExposure to full stack applications and coding skills outside of your specialization\nSAP S/4HANA APIs (OData/SOAP, communication arrangements, SAP Cloud SDK) and/or Dynamics 365 Business Central\nERP accounting flows (journal entries, PO → goods receipt → supplier invoice, three-way match)\niPaaS platforms (Paragon, Workato)\nFramework or SDK design meant for reuse by another team\nExperience designing, building, or integrating AI-powered applications, autonomous agents, or agentic workflows using LLM APIs, AI orchestration frameworks, or related technologies.\nWhat You'll Do:\nOwn and evolve the existing design: framework module boundaries, adapter interface, idempotency ledger, posting matrix, Postgres-as-queue with the managed-queue upgrade path, and tenant configuration.\nRun the early decision spikes and write the decision records: Paragon vs. standalone, language and SDK choices, AWS environment layout, Fleetio API gaps, and SAP journal-entry timeout recovery.\nGate the canonical data models with Fleetio. If Fleetio’s models arrive late, define interim models and get sign-off on them.\nTranslate accounting requirements into design. Run the finance review of posting defaults (journal-entry mode, company code, tax, currency, posting dates) with Fleetio’s SAP-literate accounting lead.\nBuild core framework code alongside the team, especially the ledger and posting-integrity paths.\nSequence work across the SAP and Dynamics lanes. Keep the “SAP ready by end of January” scope honest using the agreed cut order, and raise early when scope and capacity diverge.\nSet the engineering standards, aligned with Fleetio’s quality guidelines and IaC standard (Terraform/Pulumi). Review code and set test strategy with QA, including duplicate-posting and fault-injection tests.\nLead the technical side of the demo for Fleetio’s Feb 1-4 kickoff, and the knowledge transfer and runbooks for Fleetio’s integrations team.\nSet how the team uses AI-assisted development within the SOW’s AI clause. The plan assumes those efficiency gains.\nProvide ad-hoc technical support to other practitioners in the domain as needed\nAssist with sales requests as needed by providing technical recommendations and estimates to prospective clients\nParticipate in other duties as assigned\nPay Range:\n$164,500-$200,000/per year\nThe pay range provided reflects the target compensation for this position, and individual pay within this range is determined by a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's relevant experience, specific skills, education, certifications, internal equity with comparable roles at our company, market conditions, and the geographic location of the role. Our Minnesota office space is available for Nerds who prefer an in-office environment or collaborative setting.\nProfessional Growth: All Nerds have dedicated resources and access to funds to pursue professional development, attend industry conferences, and obtain certifications.\nWhat Skills Will Help You Be A Successful Nerd?\nCustomer-Focused Execution and Communication: Excels at translating deep customer understanding into impactful work, ensuring that every project and decision delivers exceptional user value. Able to effectively explain technical decisions to non-technical stakeholders.\nTenacious Problem-Solving: Relentlessly unravels complex problems, developing innovative solutions to overcome any challenge that stands in the way of progress.\nIntegrity-Driven Work: Builds trust by consistently upholding high standards in all work and advocating for the right approach, ensuring quality and transparency.\nCollaborative Impact: Actively elevates the team's capabilities by fostering a collaborative environment, sharing knowledge, and prioritizing collective success over individual credit.\nEnd-to-End Ownership: Takes full accountability for an initiative's entire lifecycle, from concept to completion, ensuring the final result successfully achieves its intended goals.\nDedication to Craftsmanship: Driven by a passion for their craft to continuously learn, deepen their expertise, and strive for excellence in their chosen field.\nPhysical Demands and Work Environment\nThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Reasonable Accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the functions\nSitting for extended periods: will spend significant time in meetings, presentations, and computer use.\nOccasional standing and walking: will need to move around during presentations and client interactions.\nComputer Use: Extensive use of a keyboard, mouse, and computer screen for extended periods. Ability to adjust focus between screen and documents.\nPublic Speaking: requires public speaking, including presenting to clients.\nReaching: Reaching for items on a desk, retrieving documents, or working with equipment is required.\n Lifting: Occasional lifting of light objects (e.g., laptops, peripherals) may be necessary.\nOffice Environment: The work environment is primarily an office setting, with typical office equipment and noise levels.\nOn-site client work: some work might involve on-site client visits and demonstrations, possibly requiring some walking and standing for extended periods.\nAre We the Right Fit For You?\nThe best way to get the scoop on whether Nerdery is the right place for you is to chat with current Nerds.
