This exciting new role sits at the intersection of legal practice, software development and product management. The Legal Engineering team will have primary responsibility for evaluating and improving the performance of NetDocuments’ systems and products on tasks that require legal knowledge for quality assurance. Legal Engineering is an enablement team serving our product teams, not external customers. Legal Engineers will not be “forward deployed.” Legal Engineers will partner with and advise product managers, engineering managers, and designers across the company. Legal Engineers will have responsibility for designing and implementing legal quality assurance evaluations and implementing platforms to support that work. Legal Engineers will also be tasked with discovering, proving, and recommending methods to improve legal quality in NetDocuments’ systems and allow our customers to get more value from their data.\nThis role reports to the Manager of Legal Engineering. The ideal candidate is a person with experience in some combination of legal practice, software development including coding agents, non-deterministic system evaluation, data set generation and curation, and who is inspired by the opportunity to make agentic legal AI both more reliable and more trustworthy.\nWhat your contributions will be:\nLegal Quality and Evaluation: Define what correct means for legal AI output and then design, build, and implement trustworthy, repeatable evaluations and software tools that allow our product teams to maximize legal quality.\nLegal Domain Advice: Contribute your legal experience to the work of our product teams on an advisory basis. This might include reviewing specifications, prompts, taxonomies, and product copy for legal accuracy, or giving product teams a fast, credible answer to whether designs match how legal professionals think and work.\nSystem Improvements: Find and prove out changes to existing systems that improve legal quality performance. This is a wide-ranging can be improving prompts, improving agentic workflows, or prototyping new features and new technologies.\nWhat you will bring to the team: \nExcellent verbal, written, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills\nThe ability to speak law to technologists, and to speak technology to lawyers\nDemonstrated ability to manage time and prioritize projects to meet deadlines\nStrong attention to detail\n\nRequired Education and Experience \nJD, LLB, or equivalent legal qualification, or a Bachelor’s Degree plus 3+ years working directly in legal practice, legal knowledge management, or legal operations\nExperience building executable software systems that work on legal data and improve legal workflows\nExperience working with structured data and formats such as JSON, XML, and Markdown\nExperience using agentic AI systems for legal and software development tasks\nNice-to-Have Knowledge and Experience\nExperience with the evaluation of non-deterministic systems, including data curation and generation, grading, evaluation metrics and techniques\nExperience building and improving agentic workflows for legal tasks\nKnowledge of Computational Law techniques outside of machine learning\nFamiliarity with harness development and AI-assisted software development lifecycle practices\nFull-stack software development experience\nBenefits:\n90% healthcare premiums company covered\nHSA company contribution\n401K match at 4% with immediate vesting\nFlexible PTO (typically 3 to 4 weeks a year)\n10 paid holidays\nMonthly contributions for wellness\nAccess to LinkedIn Learning with monthly dedicated time to explore\nCompensation Transparency \nThe compensation range for this position is: $155,000 - $165,000\nThe posted cash compensation for this position includes on target earnings, base salary and variable if applicable.
