Electrical Engineer Building Services

The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, development, coordination and implementation of electrical building services systems across commercial, industrial, residential, healthcare, retail and other building projects.

This is an excellent opportunity for an Electrical Engineer who enjoys working on technically challenging projects and collaborating with architects, mechanical engineers, civil engineers, quantity surveyors, contractors and other project stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and develop electrical building services systems from concept through to detailed design and construction.
• Design LV electrical distribution systems, including transformers, switchgear, distribution boards and final circuits.
• Develop lighting and emergency lighting systems.
• Design small power and general electrical services.
• Perform electrical load calculations and equipment sizing.
• Develop single-line diagrams, schematics, layouts and electrical specifications.
• Design cable containment, cable routes and electrical reticulation systems.
• Develop electrical services layouts using AutoCAD and/or Revit.
• Perform voltage-drop, short-circuit and cable-sizing calculations.
• Specify electrical equipment, cables, protection devices and associated equipment.
• Assist with the preparation of electrical Bills of Quantities and equipment schedules.
• Prepare technical reports, specifications and tender documentation.
• Review supplier and contractor drawings and technical submissions.
• Conduct site inspections and monitor electrical installations.
• Provide technical support during construction and commissioning.
• Attend project and design coordination meetings.
• Coordinate electrical services with mechanical, HVAC, fire, plumbing, structural and architectural disciplines.
• Identify and resolve clashes and design interface issues.
• Ensure designs comply with relevant SANS, IEC and statutory requirements.
• Assist with project planning, cost estimates and technical proposals.
• Provide technical guidance to junior engineers and draughting staff.
• Maintain project documentation and ensure engineering deliverables are completed to the required quality standards.

Minimum Requirements

• BEng / BSc / BTech / BEngTech in Electrical Engineering.
• 3-6 years' experience in electrical building services engineering.
• Proven experience designing LV electrical systems for buildings.
• Strong knowledge of:
  • Electrical distribution
  • Lighting
  • Small power
  • Emergency power
  • Earthing and lightning protection
  • Cable sizing and voltage-drop calculations
  • Protection and discrimination
  • Standby generators and UPS systems
• Experience with AutoCAD and/or Revit.
• Knowledge of relevant SANS and IEC standards.
• Ability to produce and review engineering drawings and technical documentation.
• Valid driver's licence.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Advantageous

• ECSA registration as a Professional Engineer or Professional Engineering Technologist, or actively working towards professional registration.
• Experience with Revit MEP.
• Experience with electrical design software such as ETAP, EasyPower or similar.
• Experience with lighting calculation software such as Dialux.
• Exposure to BIM and multidisciplinary coordination.
• Experience with healthcare, commercial, industrial, retail, residential or high-rise developments.
• Experience with renewable energy, solar PV, battery storage or energy-efficiency projects.
• Experience with data centres or mission-critical facilities.
• Previous consulting engineering experience.
