Newmont is a gold mining company with large-scale mining operations. It hires mine operations trainers, crane supervisors, mechanical technicians for shovels and drills, control systems engineers and health and safety advisors. The company is based in the United States.

Workplace Type: Onsite

Newmont produces metals the world needs - safely, responsibly and with care for people, communities and the environment. With a 100+ year history, we continue to shape the future of mining through innovation and strong operational performance. By joining our inclusive, world-class team, you can help shape the future of mining and make a meaningful difference.

Cadia is a major gold and copper mining operation in central New South Wales, about 25 kilometres from the city of Orange and 250 kilometres west of Sydney. The site is known for the Cadia East underground mine - one of the world’s largest gold deposits - which uses innovative block caving methods to produce gold doré and gold-rich copper concentrate. Unlike remote mines, Cadia is a residential (drive-in, drive-out) operation where many employees live with their families in nearby communities, enjoying the Orange region’s excellent lifestyle and amenities.

Cadia’s team has a collaborative culture built around safety, innovation and community partnership. We proudly support local towns through jobs and in-kind contributions and even run an Indigenous Buddy Programme to welcome and mentor new Indigenous employees. Working at Cadia gives you all the growth opportunities of a Tier-1 mine within a friendly regional setting - a place where you can advance your skills, be home with family, and contribute to both Newmont’s success and the prosperity of local communities.

Your Impact

As an Engineer Geotechnical - Underground Operations, you’ll provide practical geotechnical support to help maintain safe, stable underground mining conditions at Cadia. Through inspections, analysis and operational guidance, you’ll mitigate geotechnical hazards and ensure ground support designs, systems and procedures are effectively implemented.

As Part of Our Team, You Will

  • Conduct underground inspections, assess excavation and ground support conditions, and determine rehabilitation requirements.
  • Complete seismic analysis, Firing Induced Seismic Exclusion Zone updates and post-firing re-entry assessments.
  • Partner with planning and operations teams to provide geotechnical input into development, cave establishment firings and rehabilitation activities.
  • Prepare technical documentation for ground support installation and rehabilitation, and support design modifications.
  • Provide practical advice, presentations and briefings to operational supervisors and underground crews on geotechnical and ground support matters.

Prerequisites for Success in This Role

  • A bachelor’s degree or higher in geotechnical, mining or civil engineering, or relevant geology qualifications supported by appropriate experience.
  • A minimum of two years’ mine or geotechnical engineering experience, preferably within underground mining.
  • Practical knowledge of underground geotechnical inspections, ground condition assessment, ground support implementation and geotechnical monitoring systems.
  • Strong analytical, risk management, communication, presentation and technical reporting capabilities.
  • A current Australian C Class driver’s licence, including competency driving manual vehicles, and practical experience using CAD or mine planning software such as Leapfrog or Deswik.

Your Work Environment

This permanent position is offered on a 7 days on, 7 days off roster and is based at Newmont’s Cadia operation near Orange, New South Wales. You’ll work within the Underground Operations Geotechnical team, reporting to the Supervisor Geotechnical Engineer - Operations and collaborating closely with planning and operations engineers, operational supervisors and underground crews. It is envisioned that the successful applicant will have unrestricted working rights in Australia.
