Ideal candidates are responsible, safety-driven, customer-service oriented and community-minded individuals who have a sound understanding of road safety and an appreciation of the risk involved in assisting others across the roadway. Crossing Guards maintain positive public relations for the City and act as ambassadors of the School Crossing Guard program.\nWORK LOCATIONS:\nLocations and work times for guards are based on operational needs and associated warrants.\nHOURS OF WORK:\nUp to two (2) hours per day, based on assigned location.\nMorning: Primary morning hours are between 7:45AM - 9:30AM, depending on location (i.e., 1 hour)\n\nAfternoon: Primary afternoon hours are between 2:45PM - 4:15PM, depending on location (i.e., 1 hour)\n\nACCOUNTABILITIES:\nControl the flow of traffic to allow for the safe, supervised crossing of students and pedestrians.\n\nCommunicate clearly and effectively using spoken commands, hand signals and electronic devices.\n\nInstruct students and other pedestrians in safe crossing procedures.\n\nExercise sound judgment in determining safe opportunities to cross students and pedestrians, based on weather conditions, road conditions, distance and speed of traffic, gaps in traffic and distracted driving.\n\nPosition requires the ability to manage risk and to limit the potential for liability to the municipality.\n\nOversee the safe conduct of students at assigned school crossing while waiting to cross and reports concerns of unsafe behaviour to either the school or to the School Crossing Guard Supervisor.\n\nDocument and report incidents to the Supervisor, including reporting vehicles which have failed to obey stop requests.\n\nReports site safety conditions at designated school crossing location to the Supervisor.\n\nResponsible for applying salt/sand mixture, by hand, to areas of road/sidewalk adjacent to crosswalk during winter months, as necessary.\n\nAbide by the Highway Traffic Act - as applicable to School Crossing Guards, as well as municipal policies and procedures pertaining to the position with the City.\n\nPHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:\nGood Vision - must be able to see vehicles, different colours (stop lights), children and signal indications from close and far distances.\n\nGood Hearing - must be able to communicate with children, motorists, parents and hear vehicles approaching, honking, etc.\n\nGeneral Alertness - ability to assess vehicles stopping, anticipate children’s and motorists’ actions.\n\nSure Footing - Able to walk on snow, slippery conditions caused by ice and rain, inclement weather e.g. cold, hot, etc.\n\nWalking speed of .9m/sec for approximately a 6m distance.\n\nHolding arm up at shoulder height and bending elbow, extending arm above head, holding stop sign (approximately 2 lbs.) for one (1) minute intermittently for a 45-minute period.\n\nAble to stand continuously for approximately one (1) hour in all weather conditions.\n\nAs the nature of this position is to ensure the safety of children and pedestrians, Crossing Guards may need to be reassessed from time to time to ensure they are fit to perform the necessary duties.\n\nAccess to reliable transportation to get to the work site.\n\nCONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:\nA successful pre-employment medical examination by the City’s doctor must be completed.\n\nAn appointment to the position is conditional on receiving an acceptable Police Vulnerable Sector Check.\n\nEDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:\nMinimum High School Diploma.\n\nSound understanding and knowledge of Highway Traffic Act (as applicable to School Crossing Guards).\n\nEXPERIENCE:\nDemonstrated ability to give clear concise instructions to all age groups.\n\nExcellent customer service skills.\n\nPast workplace experience in a safety-oriented role is an asset.\n\nPrevious experience working with children and/or teens is an asset.\n\nQUESTIONS?\nQuestions about the School Crossing Guard position may be directed to Steve Tukonic at 905-356-7521 ext. 5212 or \nHow to apply:\nPlease submit your application including a cover letter and resume through Workday using the apply button above.\nThe City of Niagara Falls is dedicated to creating an accessible and inclusive organization and fostering a workplace culture which reflects the diverse nature of the residents we serve.
