Perform and undertake a variety of broad to specific fleet repair, mechanical diagnosis, and maintenance of County vehicles and equipment.\nESSENTIAL DUTIES\nPerform repairs, maintenance, and major overhauls to a variety of gas or diesel vehicles such as automobiles, equipment, and trucks.\n\nAssess, diagnose, analyze, recommend, and undertake overhaul repair, maintenance, and upkeep tasks required based on work orders received.\n\nPerform repair and maintenance on air-cooled equipment such as ATVs, generators, lawn mowers, riding movers, etc.\n\nDiagnose problems with equipment, disassemble engines, and examine parts for defects and excessive wear.\n\nPerform engine repair and overhaul as needed, including complete diagnostic and repair of all engine components and vehicle systems using computerized testing equipment. Test and validate repairs and maintenance work.\n\nPerform regularly scheduled, emergency, and/or preventative maintenance work.\n\nFix tire (patch or other repair appropriate to the situation) or as required, install new tires (mount/dismount). Remove tires and inspect brakes for wear and leaks; replace brakes as necessary; turn Machine brake drums and rotors with a brake lathe\n\nPerform engine tune-ups, including replacement of spark plugs, distributor caps, ignition rotor, ignition wires, fuel filters, etc. Remove and replace transmissions and engines.\n\nRemove, inspect, install/replace all worn steering/suspension parts such as control arms, tie rods, bushings, ball joints, and center links.\n\nDiagnose, inspect, and install/replace all worn charging and starting components of the electrical systems, such as batteries, alternators, fan belts, fuses, wiring, and starters.\n\nDiagnose, inspect, and install/replace heating and air conditioning systems and components using proper tools and equipment, while demonstrating proper A/C recovery/recycling, evacuation, and recharging techniques.\n\nPerform test and diagnosis of electrical systems and components.\n\nRemove and replace exhaust system components such as tailpipes, catalytic converters, and resonators; weld and solder equipment parts.\n\nPerform differential service and repair; perform oil changes; check fluid levels and air in tires, lubricate moving parts, and change coolant, oil, fluids, and filters as required. Adjust and repairs fuel systems, timing, and related components. Test drives equipment.\n\nRespond to calls for emergency maintenance or emergency wrecker service.\n\nMaintain accurate records of materials and time spent on each assigned work order.\n\nEnsure safe handling and proper use of tools, equipment, and materials; maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free work area.\n\nComply with all department and County policies, procedures, and safety regulations.\n\nADDITIONAL DUTIES. Other duties as assigned.\nQUALIFICATIONS.\nA. Education. High school diploma or equivalent.\nB. Experience. Three (3) years full-time experience as an automotive mechanic.\nC. Experience/Education substitution. In accordance with County Policy.\nD. Licenses/Certifications. Valid driver’s license. Must maintain a valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record in accordance with County policy. Commercial Driver’s License Class B is preferred.\nSpecial Requirements: Employees with a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) must comply with the drug and alcohol Clearinghouse requirements in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.\nE. Other (e.g., post-offer medical exam, polygraph, background check, driver’s license record, etc.). Must pass pre-employment background check and driving record check.\nKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION\nKnowledge of:\nMethods, principles, practices, tools, and materials of the mechanic's trade.\n\nOccupational hazards and safety precautions used in vehicle maintenance and repair operations.\n\nParts and supplies needed to perform a variety of maintenance and repairs on automotive equipment.\n\nGeneral office practices, procedures, and operation of the computer and word processor.\n\nSkill in:\nUse of diagnostic scanners.\n\nUse of multi-meters; Diagnosing mechanical, electrical, or electronic system malfunctions.\n\nUse of automotive tools and equipment for maintenance and repair.\n\nAbility to:\nInterpret and analyze service manuals, technical data, and information for decision-making and work purposes that may include the need to take action in stressful situations.\n\nEffective communication and establishing and maintaining effective and cooperative working relationships with others.\n\nCompensation Range\n$16.00 - $24.26Doña Ana County is an Equal Employment Opportunity Employer.
