The Apprentice is expected to actively participate in the full extent of the\nprogram. Instruction and program activities may be provided in person and through distance-learning\nformats.\nSuccessful program participants are expected to transition into approved North Slope Borough School\nDistrict (NSBSD) positions and fulfill a two-year post-program commitment pursuant to a separate\nparticipant agreement.\nRequirements\nMust be at least eighteen (18) years of age.\nMust demonstrate a strong commitment to learning, speaking, and advancing the Iñupiaq\nlanguage through intensive, full-time language study.\nMust be self-motivated, dependable, disciplined, and willing to learn through immersion-based\nmethods emphasizing oral communication and listening comprehension.\nMust be able to participate fully in in-person and distance-learning activities.\nMust demonstrate an interest in Iñupiaq language education, mentorship, curriculum\ndevelopment, immersion, or language revitalization.\nMust have intermediate-level proficiency with digital learning, communication, and\ndocumentation tools.\nMust be willing to fulfill the required two-year post-program service commitment with NSBSD\nupon successful completion of the program.\nPreferred Qualifications\nNorth Slope resident.\nPrevious exposure to or study of the Iñupiaq language; prior proficiency is not required.\nKnowledge of or experience with Iñupiaq culture, traditions, values, and community practices.\nExperience working with Elders, fluent speakers, students, schools, or community-based\nprograms.\nExperience in education, tutoring, mentorship, curriculum development, Indigenous language\nrevitalization, or immersion education.\nEssential Duties and Responsibilities\nParticipate fully in scheduled Iñupiaq language instruction, immersion, and cultural\nlanguage-learning activities using ILFTS, GMAP, and other approved methodologies.\nDevelop Iñupiaq listening comprehension, oral communication, vocabulary, conversational\nability, and overall language proficiency through consistent immersion and practice.\nLearn directly from and work respectfully with Iñupiaq Elders, fluent speakers, language\ninstructors, program staff, and fellow Apprentices.\nParticipate in classroom observation, job shadowing, immersion support, and other applied\ninstructional experiences appropriate to the Apprentice's language development.\nApply developing Iñupiaq language skills in educational, cultural, and community-based settings.\nEstablish language-learning and professional-development goals and participate in proficiency\nassessments, progress monitoring, and program milestone evaluations.\nAssist with the development and refinement of Iñupiaq language curriculum, learning materials,\nand resources as assigned.\nMaintain required program records and documentation demonstrating participation and\nprogress.\nDemonstrate regular attendance, punctuality, professionalism, accountability, active\nparticipation, and collaboration.\nPrepare for transition into an approved NSBSD position following successful program\ncompletion.\nAdhere to all NSBSD policies, regulations, confidentiality requirements, and professional\nexpectations.\nPerform other related duties as assigned.\nPhysical Requirements and Environmental Conditions\nThe physical demands and work environment described are representative of those encountered while\nperforming the essential functions of the position.
