North Slope Borough School District is the public school district of the North Slope Borough in northern Alaska, headquartered in Utqiagvik, formerly Barrow, and serving predominantly Inupiat communities above the Arctic Circle. It builds traditional Inupiaq ways of raising and educating children into its curriculum, with Inupiaq language teaching, Native Youth Olympics and Inupiaq dancing among school activities. It hires certified teachers, including secondary math and Inupiaq language teachers, and fills added-duty contracts for coaches, class and student council advisors, site technologists, robotics and science fair leads and building test coordinators.

Assemble, install, maintain, and repair pipes, fittings, and fixtures of heating, water, and drainage systems, according to specifications and plumbing codes.

Education and/or Experience:

Graduate from high school or general education degree.

Two years of technical training in plumbing systems or university program certificate.

Four to five years related experience and/or training.

Language Skills:

Read and interpret procedures, policies and regulations, such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

Write routine reports and correspondence.

Effectively present information and respond to questions from supervisor, staff, and public.

Mathematical Skills:

Add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Compute rate, ratio and percent and draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability:

Solve practical problems and deal with a variety of non-standard situations.

Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Valid Alaska driver’s license.

State of Alaska Journeyman’s Plumber License and current Alaska fitness card.

Other Skills and Abilities:

Lift 70 pounds.

Preferred Skills and Abilities:

Inupiaq, Language, History & Cultural experience preferred.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Locate, repair and maintain water, heating and sewage systems in all District facilities.

Complete all preventative maintenance work in a timely manner.

Inspect all contracted repair or new installation.

Estimate cost of plumbing repair projects in terms of labor, material and overhead.

Coordinate with the Plant Manager to determine if repair jobs should be contracted.

Extensive travel to villages required.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
