The Biomedical Engineer will support the delivery of quality patient care by ensuring that medical equipment is functional, safe, compliant with applicable standards, and available for use when required.\n\nKey Responsibilities\n\nA. Medical Equipment Maintenance and Repair\n\nPerform routine preventive maintenance, inspection, testing, and corrective maintenance of medical equipment.\n\nDiagnose equipment faults and carry out timely repairs to minimise downtime.\n\nEnsure the proper functioning of medical equipment, including patient monitors, infusion pumps, suction machines, ECG machines, defibrillators, anaesthesia machines, ventilators, sterilisation equipment, laboratory equipment, and other hospital devices.\n\nMaintain accurate maintenance schedules and ensure all equipment is serviced in accordance with manufacturers’ recommendations.\n\nCoordinate specialised repairs and servicing with authorised external service providers where necessary.\n\nVerify the safety and functionality of equipment before returning it to clinical use.\n\nB. Installation, Testing and Commissioning\n\nParticipate in the installation, testing, commissioning, and acceptance of new medical equipment.\n\nConfirm that equipment meets the required technical specifications and safety standards before being put into service.\n\nCoordinate with suppliers and service providers during equipment installation and commissioning.\n\nEnsure appropriate equipment placement, electrical connections, environmental conditions, and operational requirements are met.\n\nConduct performance and safety tests following repairs, servicing, or relocation of equipment.\n\nC. Equipment Calibration and Quality Assurance\n\nCoordinate and perform equipment calibration and performance verification in accordance with manufacturer requirements and applicable standards.\n\nMaintain calibration records and ensure calibration certificates are available where required.\n\nIdentify equipment that does not meet performance or safety requirements and recommend appropriate corrective action.\n\nEnsure defective or unsafe equipment is clearly labelled, withdrawn from service where necessary, and reported to the relevant department.\n\nSupport internal quality audits, clinical safety inspections, and equipment performance assessments.\n\nD. Medical Equipment Inventory and Asset Management\n\nMaintain an up-to-date inventory of all medical equipment, including serial numbers, model numbers, locations, acquisition dates, warranty details, and maintenance history.\n\nMaintain individual equipment service records and technical documentation.\n\nMonitor equipment utilisation, condition, service life, and replacement requirements.\n\nAdvise management on equipment upgrades, replacement, repair, and procurement priorities.\n\nTrack warranties, service contracts, spare parts, and consumables required for equipment maintenance.\n\nSupport the preparation of annual biomedical equipment maintenance and replacement plans.\n\nE. Patient and Staff Safety\n\nEnsure medical equipment is operated and maintained in accordance with applicable electrical, mechanical, and clinical safety requirements.\n\nIdentify and report equipment-related risks that may affect patients, staff, or hospital operations.\n\nInvestigate equipment failures and incidents, document findings, and recommend preventive measures.\n\nSupport compliance with infection prevention and control requirements during equipment maintenance, particularly in critical care, theatre, laboratory, and other clinical areas.\n\nEnsure equipment maintenance activities are conducted without compromising patient safety or interrupting essential clinical services.\n\nFollow hospital policies on occupational health and safety, electrical safety, and safe handling of equipment.\n\nF. User Training and Technical Support\n\nProvide technical support to doctors, nurses, laboratory personnel, and other healthcare professionals on the safe and proper use of medical equipment.\n\nConduct equipment orientation and basic operational training for relevant hospital staff.\n\nDevelop or support the development of user guides, equipment operating procedures, and maintenance instructions.\n\nRespond promptly to equipment-related complaints and provide practical solutions.\n\nAdvise clinical departments on appropriate equipment handling, storage, cleaning, and routine user checks.\n\nG. Procurement and Supplier Coordination\n\nProvide technical specifications for the procurement of medical equipment, spare parts, and accessories.\n\nParticipate in the technical evaluation of equipment quotations and supplier proposals.\n\nVerify delivered equipment against approved specifications and purchase documentation.\n\nLiaise with vendors, manufacturers, contractors, and service providers regarding equipment servicing, repairs, warranties, and technical support.\n\nAdvise management on the suitability, reliability, maintainability, and lifecycle costs of proposed equipment purchases.\n\nH. Documentation and Reporting\n\nMaintain accurate records of preventive maintenance, breakdowns, repairs, calibration, inspections, and equipment performance.\n\nPrepare periodic reports on equipment availability, downtime, recurring faults, maintenance costs, and outstanding technical issues.\n\nReport major equipment failures, safety concerns, and service interruptions promptly to the appropriate supervisor.\n\nMaintain records of spare parts, equipment manuals, service contracts, and technical correspondence.\n\nEnsure biomedical engineering documentation is properly filed and readily available for audits and inspections.\n\nI. Compliance and Continuous Improvement\n\nEnsure biomedical engineering activities comply with applicable Ugandan laws, regulatory requirements, relevant standards, and hospital policies.\n\nKeep abreast of developments in medical technology, equipment safety, and maintenance practices.\n\nRecommend improvements to maintenance procedures, equipment management systems, and departmental workflows.\n\nParticipate in hospital quality improvement initiatives, audits, risk assessments, and accreditation activities.\n\nPerform any other duties related to biomedical engineering as may reasonably be assigned by management.\n\nQualifications\n\nBachelor’s Degree in Biomedical Engineering or an equivalent recognised qualification in Biomedical Engineering.\n\nRegistration, licensing, or recognition by the relevant professional or regulatory body in Uganda, where applicable.\n\nAdditional training in medical equipment maintenance, calibration, electrical safety, or healthcare technology management will be an added advantage.\n\nExperience\n\nAt least five (5) years of relevant working experience in biomedical engineering, preferably in a hospital or other healthcare facility.\n\nDemonstrable experience in preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and performance testing of medical equipment.\n\nExperience working with critical care, theatre, laboratory, diagnostic, and general medical equipment will be an added advantage.\n\nSkills & Competencies\n\nPerformance will be assessed against the following indicators:\n\nEquipment uptime: Percentage of medical equipment available and functional when required.\n\nPreventive maintenance compliance: Percentage of scheduled maintenance activities completed on time.\n\nBreakdown response time: Timeliness in responding to reported equipment faults.\n\nRepair turnaround time: Time taken to restore defective equipment to safe working condition.\n\nCalibration compliance: Percentage of equipment requiring calibration that is calibrated within the prescribed intervals.\n\nEquipment safety: Number and severity of preventable equipment-related safety incidents.\n\nDocumentation accuracy: Completeness and accuracy of equipment inventory, maintenance, and service records.\n\nCost management: Effective control of repair, maintenance, and spare-parts costs without compromising safety or quality.\n\nInternal customer satisfaction: Feedback from clinical departments on the quality and timeliness of technical support.\n\nRegulatory compliance: Adherence to applicable technical, safety,
