We’re creating an environment where brilliant minds from all backgrounds collaborate to push the boundaries of what’s possible.\nFounded to commercialise research generated over the last decade at the Cavendish Laboratory, Nu Quantum is on a mission to shape the future of quantum information systems.\nWe’re working on exciting technology that will improve the utility and accelerate the time-to-market of quantum computing systems. We integrate novel quantum photonic technology to form an efficient and scalable quantum networking infrastructure in partnership with world-leading companies and academic groups.\nAbout the role\nWe’re looking for an early-career FPGA Engineer, with some relevant experience, including graduates with a strong academic, project or placement background in electronic engineering, computer engineering, embedded systems or a related discipline.\nProfessional FPGA experience is not essential. We’re particularly interested in candidates who can demonstrate hands-on experience through university projects, internships, placements, personal projects or previous roles.\nIdeally you will have experience using Xilinx FPGAs and Zynq/Ultrascale SoCs. In this role, you will work with a multidisciplinary team to implement and debug real-time control systems for quantum networking applications. You will work closely with software and electronics engineers, and AMO physicists to bring-up and deploy multi-node quantum networking systems.\nAs a member of the Control team, you will be responsible for developing and supporting our current hardware platforms, which includes the Artiq control system with the Sinara family of hardware, while also contributing to our next generation platform based on CERN’s White Rabbit technology. This is a hands-on role where you will get to contribute to the development of cutting edge quantum networking infrastructure.\nResponsibilities\nDesign, develop, and verify RTL code in SystemVerilog, Verilog, VHDL and/or Migen for Xilinx Zynq and Ultrascale devices.\nDesign, develop, and verify Embedded code in C/Rust.\nDevelop, debug and verify real-time control systems using ARTIQ Sinara hardware.\nCollaborate with senior engineers to develop and verify hardware subsystems.\nContribute to the development of debugging tools to provide in-system debug visibility of real-time systems.\nContribute to design documentation, test plans and technical reports.\nContribute to automation of tool flows, CI/CD pipelines and automated release flows.\nCollaborate with physicists, optical engineers, hardware and software engineers to define requirements, capture specifications and design appropriate solutions.\nRequirements\nWhat we're looking for\nEssential skills and experience\nA foundational understanding of digital design and RTL principles, with some experience using SystemVerilog, Verilog and/or VHDL.\nExperience with, or a strong understanding of, FPGA development, ideally with Xilinx or Altera devices.\nFamiliarity with hardware interfaces and communication protocols such as SPI, I2C and Ethernet.\nSome experience developing and testing digital designs, including the use of testbenches and simulation.\nAn understanding of concepts such as clock-domain crossing (CDC), synthesis and timing.\nExperience with a scripting language, preferably Python.\nStrong written and verbal communication skills, with an ability to document technical work clearly.\nCuriosity, initiative and enthusiasm for learning new concepts, tools and technologies.\nDesirable Skills (nice to have but not required)\nThese are not expected for a graduate or early-career candidate, but would be advantageous:\nExperience in low latency and/or real-time systems.\nExperience debugging Arm or RISC-V CPU subsystems with GDB, debuggers and trace tools.\nExperience writing embedded C or Rust.\nVerification using Cocotb and/or SystemVerilog, the use of SVAs within verification testbenches and Formal workflows.\nExperience with RF signal generation and processing, including the use of Direct Digital Synthesis (DDS) frequency synthesis techniques, RF communication protocols and modulation techniques.\nProficiency in working with high-speed DACs and ADCs for RF and mixed-signal applications.\nExperience working with Linux.\nBenefits\nWhy work with us?\nAt Nu Quantum, we celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive workplace where people of all identities, orientations, backgrounds, and experiences are empowered. We value diverse perspectives as a source of creativity and innovation and encourage applications from all backgrounds, including those from underrepresented and marginalised communities. Joining Nu Quantum means joining a team where you can grow professionally and be part of an inspiring mission to shape the future of technology.\nBenefits\nFlexible working options\nGroup DIS cover (4 x salary)\n1 month paid Sabbatical after 4 years of service\nGenerous Employee Referral Scheme\nPrivate Medical and Dental Cover (With Vitality and Bupa)\nOn-site gym membership\nCycle scheme \nRefreshments, including fruit and beverages, are available in the office.\n28 days annual leave, including a 3-day company shutdown period + UK Public Holidays\nOption to purchase up to 5 days holiday per year\nEnhanced paid family leave policies \nAccess to the Cambridge Botanical Gardens","description_format":"text","description_chars":5590,"description_truncated":false,"requirements":{"experience_years_min":null,"management_years_min":null,"team_size_min":null,"manages_managers":false,"education":null,"security_clearance":false,"languages":[]},"benefits":["Annual
