Nūmi is driven by bold ideas and relentless determination, always aiming for the stars to create real impact.\nWhy this role matters\nAs Nūmi scales its ingredient portfolio (proteins, human milk oligosaccharides, functional lipids) from bench through pilot to first industrial batches, we are looking for a Senior Downstream Process Engineer to own our purification strategy hands-on. Reporting to our Head of Industrialisation and working closely with our Head of USP, our Reg & QC Implementation Lead and our CMC Lead, you will be the senior technical anchor for our DSP function, and you will mentor a team of DSP Engineers.\nThis is a role for someone who has spent a decade or more purifying complex biomolecules from fermentation broths, cell culture supernatants or milk fractions, and who now wants to build a first-of-its-kind DSP platform from the ground up.\nKey Responsibilities\nOwn the DSP Strategy and Roadmap\nDefine and deliver Nūmi's downstream process strategy across the ingredient portfolio (proteins, oligosaccharides, functional lipids).\nOwn the DSP scale-up trajectory from lab scale through pilot and toward first industrial batches.\nDesign and refine unit-operation sequences (clarification, capture, intermediate purification, polishing, formulation, drying) tuned to each ingredient.\nLead Hands-On Process Development\nDesign, execute and interpret experiments on chromatography (ion exchange, affinity, hydrophobic interaction, size exclusion, simulated moving bed), membrane operations (MF, UF, DF, TFF, nanofiltration), centrifugation, precipitation, spray or freeze drying.\nApply DoE and QbD approaches to identify critical process parameters and build robust process characterisation packages.\nEstablish scale-down models to derisk scale-up decisions.\nTeam Building and Mentorship\nMentor mid-level DSP Engineers and interns.\nFoster a culture of transparency, scientific rigour and rapid iteration.\nScale-Up and Tech Transfer\nSupport scale-up from lab (2-5 L) through pilot (50-200 L) toward commercial scale whether in-house or via CDMOs.\nPrepare technology transfer dossiers and lead on-site oversight when working with external manufacturing partners.\nOwn the technoeconomic analysis of DSP unit operations : yield, purity, cost, throughput.\nCross-Functional Collaboration\nPartner with Head of USP on interface points (harvest strategy, feed composition impact on DSP).\nPartner with our CMC Lead on release specifications, comparability protocols and stability data supporting the Novel Food dossier.\nPartner with our Reg & QC Implementation Lead to ensure DSP methods are inspection-ready and aligned with agency expectations.\nRequirements\nExperience & Knowledge\nMSc or PhD in bioprocess engineering, chemical engineering, biochemistry or a related discipline, with 10+ years of hands-on downstream process development experience.\nDeep expertise in purification of sugars (HMOs, oligosaccharides), recombinant proteins from microbial or fungal fermentation, or milk ingredients (lactoferrin, whey proteins, casein) from bovine milk is highly valued.\nTrack record of scaling at least one DSP process from bench through pilot toward commercial scale.\nStrong command of chromatography, membrane operations, filtration, drying, and formulation unit operations.\nComfortable with DoE, QbD, process characterisation, technology transfer to CMOs/CDMOs.\nLeadership & Judgement\nPrior experience mentoring or leading DSP scientists and engineers.\nStrong critical thinker who is comfortable solving unique scientific challenges by learning from peers, seminars and scientific literature.\nAbility to translate technical process decisions into regulatory-defensible documentation.\nCommunication\nStrong verbal and written communication skills in English.\nBonus\nIdeally you have experience in some, but not necessarily all, of the following areas :\nPrecision fermentation, plant biomass fermentation, or milk ingredient purification.\nNovel food dossier support or biologics filing support.\nSanitary process design (HACCP, food-grade).\nSpray drying, freeze drying, formulation of powdered ingredients.\nSimulated moving bed (SMB) chromatography for sugars.\nAseptic technique in biosafety cabinets and cGMP-adjacent environments.\nStartup or scale-up environment (Series A to C).\nBenefits\n Unique opportunity to be one of the first senior hires at an early-stage biotech company, shaping the future of infant nutrition.\n Growth opportunities : you will have the opportunity to grow with the company and shape the Bioprocess organisation as it scales.\n Access to top-quality facilities, research services and infrastructure.\n Competitive salary, ESOP, part health insurance coverage, part transportation and lunch coverage.\n⭐ Employee-first mentality, we prioritize the well-being of our team members, both in terms of their mental and physical health.\nRecruitment process\nInitial skills matching.\nFirst interview with our cofounder and CTO Eugénie.\nA technical case study to assess your understanding of DSP scale-up and process characterisation.\nA last interview on-site to meet our cofounder and CEO Eden, part of the team and visit the labs.\n2 to 3 reference calls.\nNūmi is committed to building a diverse and inclusive workplace.
