About the Role:

We are looking for a Senior Backend Developer with deep Magento / Adobe Commerce expertise and practical experience using AI to automate engineering and business processes.

This role focuses on backend development, APIs, third-party integrations, and automation, with additional responsibilities supporting Shopify. You will collaborate with frontend developers, QA, product, and infrastructure teams to deliver new capabilities and improve platform performance and reliability.

Beyond using AI to assist with coding, you should be comfortable identifying manual processes and building AI-powered workflows that connect existing tools and systems. We are looking for someone who can apply AI to practical problems, evaluate the quality of its output, and turn useful ideas into reliable automations.

You will report to our VP, Software Engineering and this position is a remote role based in the United States. 

Key Responsibilities:

• Own backend development from design through release: Develop and maintain custom Magento / Adobe Commerce modules, troubleshoot complex issues, and deliver reliable, maintainable solutions that follow platform best practices.
• Build APIs and integrations: Develop GraphQL capabilities for headless experiences and connect internal and external systems using REST and GraphQL APIs, webhooks, and asynchronous processing.
• Automate processes using AI: Identify repetitive engineering and business tasks and implement practical solutions using AI tools, model APIs, scripts, and workflow automation. Connect these solutions to existing systems and include appropriate validation, error handling, logging, and human review.
• Improve testing and development workflows: Write and maintain unit tests, use AI-assisted development tools thoughtfully, and help incorporate automated testing and quality checks into build and release pipelines.
• Support Shopify development and operational automation: Build and maintain Shopify integrations, apps, webhook handlers, and Liquid customizations. Create scripts and utilities for data processing, migrations, troubleshooting, and recurring operational tasks.
• Contribute to engineering practices and delivery: Participate in technical design discussions, code reviews, environment management, and deployments. Share knowledge, support other developers, and collaborate with frontend and QA teams throughout implementation and testing.

Required Qualifications:

• Magento / Adobe Commerce: 5+ years of strong hands-on experience with Magento 2 / Adobe Commerce and PHP, including custom module development and a deep understanding of plugins, observers, dependency injection, service contracts, EAV, and the application lifecycle. Ability to extend platform functionality without modifying core code.
• GraphQL: Experience creating and extending `schema.graphqls` definitions and implementing custom resolvers, with attention to authorization, error handling, data loading, and performance.
• Third-party integrations: Experience building and maintaining REST and GraphQL integrations and webhook consumers. Familiarity with authentication, retries, idempotency, rate limits, queueing, logging, and recovery from integration failures.
• AI-powered process automation: Practical experience using AI tools or large language model APIs to automate workflows-not only generate code. Ability to design prompts, work with structured outputs, integrate AI into existing applications, and validate results. Awareness of data privacy, cost, reliability, and when traditional rules-based automation is more appropriate.
• Scripting and automation: Ability to build scripts and utilities using Python, Node.js, PHP, or similar tools to support operational workflows, data processing, and integrations.
• Unit testing:   Experience writing meaningful, maintainable unit tests, preferably with PHPUnit. Ability to isolate dependencies, use mocks appropriately, and cover business logic, edge cases, and failure scenarios. Ability to review and validate AI-generated tests rather than relying on them without verification.
• Shopify: Working knowledge of Liquid, the Shopify Admin and Storefront APIs, app development, and webhooks.
• Adobe Commerce Cloud and CI/CD: Experience with Adobe Commerce Cloud environments and the `magento-cloud` CLI, along with an understanding of environment configuration, deployment workflows, and basic CI/CD practices.
• Git and collaboration: Strong understanding of branching, pull requests, code reviews, merge conflict resolution, and release coordination. Ability to communicate technical decisions clearly, work independently, and collaborate across teams.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience building AI agents or multi-step AI workflows that interact with external tools and APIs, with appropriate permissions and approval steps.
• Experience moving AI automation prototypes into production and measuring their accuracy, reliability, cost, and time savings.
• Experience integrating automated tests and quality checks into CI/CD pipelines, including test reporting and preventing releases when required checks fail.
• Experience diagnosing backend performance issues involving database queries, caching, GraphQL resolvers, or asynchronous processing.

Nutrafol takes into consideration a wide range of factors in final compensation decisions, including but not limited to: skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, qualifications and education, and other business and organizational needs. The listed range is applicable only to the annual base salary and does not include additional perks, benefits, or applicable bonus eligibility comprising the total compensation package.

Salary Range:

$150,000—$180,000 USD
