This position is centered on Linux systems administration and technical operations, but the environment crosses applications, databases, networking, automation, monitoring, security, and messaging systems.\nThe right person does not need to be an expert in every technology in the environment. They do need to be comfortable taking ownership of a technical problem, investigating it across multiple layers, identifying the root cause, and either resolving the issue or providing enough technical information to get it to the right person for resolution.\nThis is not a traditional CI/CD-focused DevOps position. While DevOps tools and practices are part of the environment, success in this role depends more heavily on strong Linux fundamentals, technical curiosity, troubleshooting ability, and understanding how systems interact.\nWhat You Will Do\nAdminister, maintain, troubleshoot, and support Linux-based production, development, test, and supporting infrastructure.\nInvestigate system and application problems through logs, configuration, monitoring data, network behavior, application code, database activity, and other available evidence.\nPerform root-cause analysis of technical issues and drive problems toward resolution.\nDetermine when an issue can be resolved directly and when it should be escalated or routed to software developers, network engineers, security personnel, or other technical specialists.\nPerform Linux system maintenance, patching, configuration, software installation, service management, performance troubleshooting, and operational support.\nSupport system security and hardening activities, including vulnerability remediation, access controls, host firewalls, security configuration, and compliance-related changes.\nUse and maintain automation and configuration-management capabilities supporting the environment.\nWork with monitoring systems to understand system health, investigate alerts, determine what should be monitored, and create or modify monitoring checks as needed.\nSupport relational databases at an operational level, including installation and configuration, connectivity, access, basic SQL queries, and troubleshooting.\nSupport messaging and event-driven infrastructure used to move information between systems and applications.\nRead application and automation code as part of troubleshooting. Trace program logic, identify relevant functions or processes, test components where appropriate, and communicate findings to developers.\nDevelop or modify scripts and lightweight automation to support administration, troubleshooting, monitoring, and operational activities.\nTroubleshoot connectivity and system communication issues using a practical understanding of networking fundamentals.\nWork with technical staff across systems, software development, networking, security, and scientific operations to resolve issues that cross traditional technology boundaries.\nDocument technical findings, configurations, troubleshooting steps, and operational procedures.\nRequired QualificationsStrong hands-on Linux systems administration experience, preferably in enterprise or production environments.\nDemonstrated ability to independently troubleshoot complex technical problems and perform root-cause analysis.\nStrong understanding of Linux services, processes, logs, filesystems, permissions, packages, configuration, and general system operations.\nExperience performing system maintenance, patching, configuration, troubleshooting, and operational support.\nExperience using monitoring and logging information to investigate system or application behavior.\nHands-on scripting or automation experience.\nAbility to read and follow application or automation code sufficiently to support troubleshooting, identify relevant logic, and communicate effectively with software developers.\nWorking knowledge of networking fundamentals, including TCP/IP, DNS, ports and protocols, routing concepts, firewalls, and connectivity troubleshooting.\nPractical familiarity with relational databases, including database installation/configuration, connectivity, basic administration, and SQL queries.\nFamiliarity with system security concepts such as patching, access controls, host firewalls, vulnerability remediation, and secure system configuration.\nAbility and willingness to investigate unfamiliar technologies rather than stopping troubleshooting when an issue crosses into another technical domain.\nAbility to communicate technical findings clearly and work collaboratively with specialists in other technical areas.\nHigh school diploma or equivalent.\nMust reside and perform work within the United States.\nMust be able to complete Government Public Trust suitability requirements and obtain and maintain required Government credentials, including a PIV card.\nMust be able to maintain a work schedule beginning between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. Pacific Time, regardless of U.S. location. 100% Remote within the United States.\nExperienceApproximately 5 or more years of relevant hands-on experience is preferred in Linux systems administration, infrastructure operations, systems engineering, production support, technical operations, or a related technical role.\nWe will also consider candidates with less traditional experience who can demonstrate equivalent technical depth, strong troubleshooting ability, and the ability to work independently in complex technical environments.\nHighly Desirable Experience\nYou do not need to have worked with every technology below. Experience in one technology can often be transferred to another. We are more interested in strong fundamentals and the ability to learn than in matching every product name on a checklist.\nRed Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), Rocky Linux, or similar enterprise Linux distributions.\nPython, Bash, or other scripting/programming languages.\nPostgreSQL administration and troubleshooting.\nAnsible or comparable configuration-management and automation technologies.\nNagios, including creating or modifying monitoring checks or plugins.\nPrometheus and Grafana or comparable metrics and visualization platforms.\nNATS or ActiveMQ.\nOther message brokers or event/messaging platforms such as RabbitMQ, Kafka, or similar technologies.\nSELinux and Linux host firewall configuration.\nDISA STIGs, FISMA, vulnerability remediation, or experience operating systems within Federal or other regulated environments.\nAWS or other cloud infrastructure.\nCI/CD pipelines and automated deployment processes.\nGit/GitLab and source-control-based operational workflows.\nExperience supporting distributed systems where applications, databases, messaging, networks, and infrastructure interact.\nAdditional networking experience beyond basic systems-administration networking knowledge.\nThe Kind of Engineer Who Will Do Well Here\nThis role is a good fit for someone who sees an unfamiliar technical problem and wants to understand what is actually happening and why.\nYou may not immediately know the answer. That is expected. What matters is knowing how to investigate: reproduce the problem, collect evidence, examine logs and monitoring data, understand dependencies, test assumptions, isolate components, follow application or system behavior, and continue narrowing the problem until the root cause is understood.\nYou should be comfortable saying:\n“I don't know yet, but I know how to start figuring it out.”\nYou do not need to be a software developer, database engineer, or network engineer. You should, however, understand enough about those areas to recognize when they are relevant to a problem, investigate across those boundaries, and communicate effectively with the specialists who own them.\nIf your experience has given you broad technical fundamentals, strong Linux skills, and a habit of digging into difficult problems until they make sense, we would like to hear from you.\nWhy Join Nationwide IT Services?\nNationwide IT Services is a trusted government contractor supporting Department of Defense customers. Join us to work on high-impact cybersecurity missions with experienced professionals in a collaborative, growth-focused environment.\nOur benefits package includes medical, dental, and vision insurance; life and disability insurance; a 401(k) plan with employer match; paid holidays; PTO (sick/vacation); commuter benefits; an employee assistance program (EAP); educational reimbursement; and Pet Insurance.\nSalary range $100,000 to $137,000 annually\nThe salary range is a general guideline. We consider several factors when determining base salary offers, including the position's scope and responsibilities, the candidate's experience, education, and skills, and current market conditions.","description_format":"text","description_chars":9391,"description_truncated":false,"requirements":{"experience_years_min":5,"management_years_min":null,"team_size_min":null,"manages_managers":false,"education":{"level":"high_school","optional":true},"security_clearance":true,"languages":[]},"benefits":["Vision insurance"],"hiring_locations":[{"name":"United States","iso":"US","kind":"country"}],"hiring_excludes":[],"relocation_offered":false,"industries":[],"lifecycle":[{"event":"open","at":"2026-10-16T04:28:33Z"}],"visa":[],"liveness":{"score":90,"band":"hot","label":"Hiring now","p_open":1,"p_active":0.903,"p_room":1,"age_days":4,"expected_fill_days":38,"reasons":["conf:2","velocity","win:early"],"computed_at":"2026-10-20T05:45:00Z"},"pay":{"stated_usd_annual":137000,"is_top_pay":false},"html_url":"https://alion.io/job/nw-its-senior-linux-systems-engineer-infrastructure-operations-nationwide-it-services","json_url":"https://alion.io/job/nw-its-senior-linux-systems-engineer-infrastructure-operations-nationwide-it-services.json","meta":{"generated_at":"2026-10-20T22:12:52Z","cache_seconds":300,"methodology":"https://alion.io/methodology","terms":"https://alion.io/terms","contact":"https://alion.io/contact","api":"https://alion.io/developers","about":"Alion is a live layer of people, companies and AI agents: who they are, whether they are real and active right now, what they do and how to work with them, readable by people and by agents and paid per call.","catalog":"https://alion.io/catalog.json","usage":{"tier":"crawler_verified","counted_by":"address","units_charged":1,"used_today":25951,"day_limit":null,"remaining_today":null,"minute_limit":300,"resets_at":"2026-10-21T00:00:00Z"}},"offers":[{"id":"company.slices","title":"One company in depth, by slice","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002,"plus_per_slice":{"credits":0.05,"usd":0.005}},"unit":"per company, plus each slice with data","note":"the employer in depth","call":{"mcp_tool":"get_company","arguments":{"id":4418857},"rest":"https://alion.io/mcp/rest/get_company?id=4418857"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.slices&for=job%2Fnw-its-senior-linux-systems-engineer-infrastructure-operations-nationwide-it-services"},{"id":"market.stats","title":"A market slice: pay, demand and time to fill","status":"live","price":{"credits":1,"usd":0.1},"unit":"per slice","note":"pay, demand and time to fill for this role and place","call":{"mcp_tool":"market_stats"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=market.stats&for=job%2Fnw-its-senior-linux-systems-engineer-infrastructure-operations-nationwide-it-services"},{"id":"job.search","title":"Open jobs by role, technology, place, pay and visa","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002},"unit":"per posting in a list","note":"similar open postings","call":{"mcp_tool":"search_jobs"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=job.search&for=job%2Fnw-its-senior-linux-systems-engineer-infrastructure-operations-nationwide-it-services"},{"id":"company.verify","title":"Is this company real and active right now","status":"pilot","price":null,"unit":"per company","request":{"url":"https://alion.io/catalog/request","method":"POST","body":"{\"offer\": \"company.verify\", \"for\": \"job/nw-its-senior-linux-systems-engineer-infrastructure-operations-nationwide-it-services\", \"note\": \"what you need it for\"}"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.verify&for=job%2Fnw-its-senior-linux-systems-engineer-infrastructure-operations-nationwide-it-services"}]}
