Principal Database Architect (MySQL)

ObjectStyle is a provider of open source solutions and commercial software development services with offices in the US and Poland. We are a major driving force behind such projects as Apache Cayenne - a powerful ORM framework, Bootique.io - a container-less Java app launcher, LinkRest - a model-driven REST engine, and a number of others. Our clients are located in the US, Australia, and EU. We work with the National Hockey League, Wikipedia, and other great companies.

About the Role

This is not a “whiteboard-only” architect role. We are looking for a senior MySQL infrastructure professional who has grown into architecture. The ideal candidate comes from one of these backgrounds:

Senior / Lead / Principal MySQL DBA - you know MySQL inside out and have led complex, high-stakes production environments.

Database Reliability Engineer (DBRE) / Data Platform Engineer - you’ve built and operated resilient, observable data platforms at scale.

Infrastructure / Platform Architect with data specialization - you’ve architected hybrid cloud + on-prem systems with a deep focus on data layers.

If you are a hands-on engineer who now thinks in terms of systems, strategy, and compliance - while still being able to dig into query plans and replication lag - this role is for you.

Key Responsibilities

• Define the data platform roadmap, balancing on-prem legacy with cloud-native AWS solutions.
• Design HA/DR architectures (replication, failover, cross-region redundancy).
• Lead major migrations, upgrades, and platform consolidations.
• Implement backup/restore strategies and define SLOs/SLIs as a DBRE.
• Enforce least-privilege access, PII protection, and SOC 2 controls.
• Automate provisioning (Terraform/CloudFormation) and database change management (CI/CD).
• Mentor teams and translate business/compliance needs into scalable data solutions.

Required Qualifications

Experience:

• 7+ years in data engineering, DBA, or infrastructure roles.
• 2+ years in a lead or architect capacity.
• Deep, hands-on MySQL expertise is mandatory (Performance Schema, InnoDB internals, replication management).
• Experience with PostgreSQL, SQL Server, or NoSQL is a plus.
• Hybrid cloud + on-prem Linux environments.
• SOC environment experience.

Technical Skills:

• SQL, Python, Bash/PowerShell.
• AWS: RDS, Aurora, S3, EC2, VPC, IAM, DMS, Glue.
• IaC: Terraform or CloudFormation.
• CI/CD for database changes with audit trails.
• Data Warehousing: Snowflake, Redshift, or BigQuery.
• Modeling: ER/Studio, dbdiagram, Lucid.
• Observability: Datadog, Prometheus, CloudWatch.

Soft Skills:

• Strong communication - able to present to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Strategic, cost-aware mindset.

Education & Certifications

• Bachelor’s in CS, IS, or equivalent experience.
• Preferred: AWS Certified Database - Specialty or AWS Certified Solutions Architect.
