Engineers at this level apply deep understanding of the software lifecycle to design system architectures, lead or significantly contribute to project software activities, and ensure delivered solutions satisfy electrical, mechanical, and operational (CONOPS) needs while collaborating closely with engineering leads, project managers, and external customers.\nBeyond feature leadership, this role executes hands-on systems software work across Linux-based distributed and embedded environments-implementing system services and application components; building hardware/software interfaces and device drivers; enabling data-processing functions; and delivering robust communications capabilities. Typical development spans native Linux and containerized deployments (e.g., Docker/Podman) with orchestration via Kubernetes, and leverages DDS-based publish/subscribe messaging for real-time, mission-critical data exchange-consistent with OTECH integration-lab practices and container/DDS orchestration patterns.\nEngineers will participate in the complete software development lifecycle: requirements implementation, software design, coding, unit and integration testing, debugging, peer reviews, configuration management, and technical documentation. The role benefits from a systems-programming foundation (memory/resource management, multithreading/concurrency, IPC, networking, and efficient data structures) and facility with modern toolchains and build systems (GCC/Clang, Cargo, CMake), debugging and analysis tools (GDB, sanitizers), and structured data formats (JSON, XML). Work products are supported by CI/CD pipelines and automated testing to ensure reliability and repeatability; engineers frequently contribute to test harnesses and lab workflows that validate containerized services and DDS participants under failure-recovery and health-check scenarios.\nSuccess in this role requires strong technical judgment, the ability to see the big picture, and a capacity to devise innovative solutions when conventional approaches fall short. Engineers are expected to mentor junior developers, support proposal and design trade studies, and participate in software testing across factory floor, offsite, and offshore environments-developing solutions that integrate seamlessly with sensors, SBC-based control systems, and mission operations while meeting documentation and CDRL acceptance criteria consistent with OTECH standards.\n Apply working knowledge of software lifecycle to develop and begin leading software efforts.\nImplement decisions for designing and maintaining software architecture.\nActively interface with other engineering leads, program managers and external customers.\nKey contributor to creation, maintenance and acceptance of project CDRL’s. This includes requirements management, software documentation, unit testing, software safety testing, and software qualification testing. \nContribute to trade studies for hardware such as navigation units, board stacks, and power monitors. \nSupport software testing on the factory floor, offsite, and offshore.\nPerform analysis of user requirements, concept of operations documents, and high-level system architectures to develop system requirements specifications.\nGuide system development and implementation planning through preparation of concept of operations, interfaces control documents, hazard analysis, and test plans and procedures.\nDisplays excellent technical judgment, attention to detail, and ability to look at the “big picture” in system design.\nDemonstrates ability to devise innovative solutions to problems when conventional solutions are insufficient.\nPrepares reports and presents results to management and client.\nSchedules can be demanding throughout the year and occasional work outside normal working hours should be anticipated.\nMentorship of junior team members. \n Essential Qualifications\nBS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, or a related STEM field (or commensurate experience).\n5+ years of practical software engineering experience.\nFoundational understanding of Linux system programming.\nProficiency in at least one core systems language: C, C++, or Rust.\nUnderstanding of memory and resource management, multithreading/concurrency, and inter-process communication (IPC).\nUnderstanding of networking fundamentals and structured data handling.\nAbility to participate in all phases of the SDLC: requirements implementation, design, coding, unit and integration testing, debugging, peer reviews, configuration management, and documentation.\nAbility to work collaboratively with software, systems, hardware, test, and cybersecurity teams.\nStrong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to document and present engineering concepts effectively.\nAbility to obtain and maintain a U.S. DoW Security Clearance.\nMust be a U.S. citizen.\nPreferred Qualifications\nExperience developing underwater vehicle or robotic software frameworks and extending framework capabilities.\nExperience working on DoW software programs.\nExperience with Linux or bare-metal firmware development.\nExperience developing system services, application components, hardware/software interfaces, or data-processing functions for Linux-based distributed or embedded systems.\nFamiliarity with Linux system programming fundamentals (memory/resource management, IPC, multithreading, networking, data structures).\nExperience with microservices architectures, containerization, and orchestration (Docker/Podman, Kubernetes).\nFamiliarity with distributed systems and DDS-based publish/subscribe messaging.\nExperience with Rust or Python for systems scripting, tooling, or automation.\nFamiliarity with GCC/Clang, Cargo, CMake, build systems, and command-line development workflows.\nExperience with debugging tools such as GDB and sanitizers.\nExperience with microprocessors and SBC-based control systems interfacing with sensors and hardware (cameras, navigation sensors, valve packs, etc.).\nAbility to implement and debug communication protocols including UDP/multicast, TCP, serial, SPI, I2C, and CAN.\nExperience with CI/CD pipelines and automated testing.\nAbility to set up basic bench-testing environments (power, communications links, analog devices).\nProficiency with lab measurement tools such as oscilloscopes and multimeters.\nExperience with Jira, Git, and modern development workflows.\nAbility to work collaboratively with software, systems, hardware, test, and cybersecurity engineering teams.\nExperience with UI/UX design.\nAdditional\nAdditional duties as assigned.\nWe offer a comprehensive and competitive benefits package. Employee benefits vary by role, however, may include Health and Wellness, Mental Health, Retirement Savings, Life and Disability, Paid Maternity and Parental Leave, Paid Time Off, Tuition Reimbursement, and an Employee Assistance Program.\nCompensation $118,600.00 - $177,800.00","description_format":"text","description_chars":7171,"description_truncated":false,"requirements":{"experience_years_min":5,"management_years_min":null,"team_size_min":null,"manages_managers":false,"education":{"level":"bachelor","optional":false},"security_clearance":false,"languages":[]},"benefits":["Parental leave"],"hiring_locations":[{"name":"United States","iso":"US","kind":"country"}],"hiring_excludes":[],"relocation_offered":false,"industries":["Marine & Ocean Engineering","Underwater & Marine Robotics","Oil & Gas"],"lifecycle":[{"event":"open","at":"2026-10-13T00:29:41Z"}],"visa":[{"country":"US","licensed_sponsor":true,"evidence":"H-1B filings in 12 months: 1 · green card filings: 2","filings_12m":1,"filings_prev_12m":2,"green_card_filings_12m":2,"median_offered_wage_usd":94167,"route":null,"cap_exempt":false,"checked_at":"2026-10-15T11:24:14+00:00","sources":["US Department of Labor: LCA disclosure data (H-1B, H-1B1, E-3)","US Department of Labor: PERM disclosure data (green cards)"],"filings_for_role_12m":1}],"liveness":{"score":90,"band":"hot","label":"Hiring now","p_open":1,"p_active":0.903,"p_room":1,"age_days":2,"expected_fill_days":17,"reasons":["conf:3","velocity","win:early","comp:brand"],"computed_at":"2026-10-15T05:46:00Z"},"pay":{"stated_usd_annual":177800,"is_top_pay":true},"html_url":"https://alion.io/job/oceaneering-international-software-engineer-iii-4","json_url":"https://alion.io/job/oceaneering-international-software-engineer-iii-4.json","meta":{"generated_at":"2026-10-15T19:45:48Z","cache_seconds":300,"methodology":"https://alion.io/methodology","terms":"https://alion.io/terms","contact":"https://alion.io/contact","api":"https://alion.io/developers","about":"Alion is a live layer of people, companies and AI agents: who they are, whether they are real and active right now, what they do and how to work with them, readable by people and by agents and paid per call.","catalog":"https://alion.io/catalog.json","usage":{"tier":"crawler_verified","counted_by":"address","units_charged":1,"used_today":30004,"day_limit":null,"remaining_today":null,"minute_limit":300,"resets_at":"2026-10-16T00:00:00Z"}},"offers":[{"id":"company.slices","title":"One company in depth, by slice","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002,"plus_per_slice":{"credits":0.05,"usd":0.005}},"unit":"per company, plus each slice with data","note":"the employer in depth","call":{"mcp_tool":"get_company","arguments":{"id":176562},"rest":"https://alion.io/mcp/rest/get_company?id=176562"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.slices&for=job%2Foceaneering-international-software-engineer-iii-4"},{"id":"market.stats","title":"A market slice: pay, demand and time to fill","status":"live","price":{"credits":1,"usd":0.1},"unit":"per slice","note":"pay, demand and time to fill for this role and place","call":{"mcp_tool":"market_stats"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=market.stats&for=job%2Foceaneering-international-software-engineer-iii-4"},{"id":"job.search","title":"Open jobs by role, technology, place, pay and visa","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002},"unit":"per posting in a list","note":"similar open postings","call":{"mcp_tool":"search_jobs"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=job.search&for=job%2Foceaneering-international-software-engineer-iii-4"},{"id":"company.verify","title":"Is this company real and active right now","status":"pilot","price":null,"unit":"per company","request":{"url":"https://alion.io/catalog/request","method":"POST","body":"{\"offer\": \"company.verify\", \"for\": \"job/oceaneering-international-software-engineer-iii-4\", \"note\": \"what you need it for\"}"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.verify&for=job%2Foceaneering-international-software-engineer-iii-4"}]}
