Our Waihi Operation in the North Island of New Zealand is an underground gold mine. A recent consent for the Waihi North Project, a new mine to be developed 6km north of the existing operation has provided a long-term extension of mine life providing our 400+ staff and contractors, and the people of Waihi, an assurance that we plan to be here for the long-term.

Are you a talented and ambitious student studying towards a Bachelor of Science (BSc), with a major in Geology or Earth Sciences and looking to gain practical experience in your field of study? We have the perfect opportunity for you to join our Resource Development - Exploration & Geology team at OceanaGold working at our Waihi operation.

This paid internship opportunity will run approximately from mid-November through to mid-February (dependent on exam timetable of the successful applicant) working with our talented Resource Development - Exploration & Geology team on-site at Waihi. The hours of work are 7:00am to 4:30pm, working a 9-day fortnight roster (5 days on, 2 days off, 4 days on, 3 days off) 40.5hrs per week. Take a long weekend every second week to explore the stunning Coromandel!

What will you be doing?

  • Gaining practical experience in your chosen field of study by working on diverse projects assigned by department managers and team members.
  • Participating in various group activities and projects with other Interns, providing you with a well-rounded knowledge of the mining process.
  • Presenting your experiences and key learnings to the Site Management Team at the conclusion of the internship, showcasing your growth and achievements.

Specific project work will involve:

  • The internship will provide practical geological and mining industry experience through participation in core logging, sampling programmes, database management support, and Resource Development activities. The intern will work alongside the Resource Development team to assist with geological data collection and interpretation while gaining exposure to exploration and orebody knowledge processes.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Complete site inductions within the first week.
  • Receive training in geological core logging and sampling procedures.
  • Assist with routine core logging and geological data collection activities (eg. field mapping and sampling).
  • Support sample dispatch, tracking, and QA/QC processes.
  • Assist with geological database validation and data entry tasks.
  • Improve logging productivity and reduce backlog of geological data processing.
  • Provide additional capacity for the Resource Development team during the summer field season.
  • Deliver a final presentation summarizing internship learnings and contributions to the department.

What do I need, to join the Intern program?

  • Ideally have accommodation options at Waihi or surrounding areas
  • Full Class 1 Drivers licence (ability to drive manual vehicles is preferred)
  • Unrestricted New Zealand working rights
  • Available from mid-November 2026 through to mid-February 2027
  • In your 2nd last or final year of role-related study
  • Studying towards a Bachelor of Science (BSc), with a major in Geology or Earth Sciences
  • Current & strong academic performance and a passion for your chosen field
  • Effective communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • 9-day fortnight roster (5 days on, 2 days off, 4 days on, 3 days off) 40.5hrs per week
  • Hours of work are 7:00am to 4:30pm
