Reporting to the COO and CFO, this role will oversee enterprise technology strategy, infrastructure, cybersecurity, business systems, and user support across OceanX’s offices, vessel operations, education programs, media production, and other global initiatives.\nThis is a hands-on leadership role that balances strategic oversight with direct execution of technology initiatives and day-to-day operational needs. The Senior Manager will lead a small, geographically distributed team, manage external technology partners, and help drive the separation of OceanX’s IT and risk infrastructure from its parent organization. All employees are expected to be honest, excited about providing and receiving objective feedback, constantly striving for self-improvement, and committed to the pursuit of excellence.\nPosition Location: \nNew York City\nDuties and Responsibilities:\nDevelop and execute an enterprise technology strategy aligned with OceanX’s organizational priorities and growth plans.\nLead IT planning, governance, budgeting, vendor strategy, technology roadmaps, and investment decisions.\nServe as a trusted advisor to senior leadership, ensuring that technology effectively supports OceanX’s scientific research, education, media production, vessel operations, and global programs.\nLead the separation and transition of OceanX’s IT and technology risk infrastructure and related workstreams from its parent organization.\nDevelop and maintain practical IT policies, standards, governance frameworks, and operating procedures.\nOversee networks, cloud platforms, collaboration tools, identity and access management, end-user computing, AI-related infrastructure, and other core technology services.\nProvide hands-on support across technology implementations, troubleshooting, and day-to-day operational needs.\nEnsure technology services are reliable, scalable, secure, and responsive across OceanX’s global operations.\nOwn and manage OceanX’s cybersecurity and technology risk program, with support from specialist resources as needed.\nOversee endpoint protection, identity and access management, vulnerability management, incident response, disaster recovery, and business continuity planning.\nEnsure compliance with applicable privacy, information security, and contractual requirements.\nLead periodic risk assessments, security testing, technology audits, and remediation efforts.\nOversee OceanX’s portfolio of enterprise applications, SaaS platforms, AI tools, and emerging technologies.\nLead system integrations, technology modernization, and digital transformation initiatives that simplify work and improve the employee experience.\nIdentify opportunities to improve organizational effectiveness through technology, automation, data, and the responsible use of artificial intelligence.\nLead a customer-focused IT support function that provides responsive, high-quality service to staff worldwide.\nEstablish service standards, operating metrics, and clear support and escalation processes.\nDevelop and oversee employee technology training and cybersecurity awareness programs, leveraging specialist support when appropriate.\nManage relationships with managed service providers, telecommunications partners, consultants, and technology vendors.\nLead, mentor, and develop a small, geographically distributed IT team.\nBuild a culture of collaboration, accountability, continuous improvement, and exceptional service.\nManage departmental budgets, technology contracts, resource plans, and vendor performance.\nWillingness to work flexible hours, including early mornings or late evenings, to support cross-time zone collaboration.\nAdaptable to varying workloads, balancing periods of focused execution with lighter operational phases.\nAdditional duties as assigned.\nQualifications:\nProfessional Experience:Bachelor’s degree in information systems, computer science, engineering, or a related discipline; an advanced degree is desirable.\nAt least twelve (12) years of progressive information technology experience, including leadership responsibility for enterprise infrastructure, cybersecurity, business systems, and service delivery.\nExperience leading small, geographically distributed technology teams and influencing outcomes across a complex organization.\nStrong knowledge of cloud environments, networking, cybersecurity, identity and access management, enterprise applications, AI tools, and productivity platforms.\nFamiliarity with Google-based enterprise technology environments, including Google Workspace and Google Cloud Platform, is preferred.\nExperience evaluating or managing transitions between Microsoft and Google technology ecosystems is highly desirable.\nDemonstrated ability to balance technology strategy and leadership with hands-on implementation, troubleshooting, and operational support.\nExperience managing outsourced service providers, consultants, vendors, and strategic technology partners.\nDemonstrated success leading technology modernization, systems integration, and digital transformation initiatives.\nExperience developing and managing cybersecurity, technology risk, incident response, disaster recovery, and business continuity programs.\nStrong financial and operational management experience, including responsibility for budgets, contracts, roadmaps, and resource planning.\nExcellent communication and stakeholder management skills, including the ability to explain complex technical issues clearly to nontechnical audiences and senior leaders.\nProven ability to manage competing priorities, respond effectively to evolving needs, and maintain high standards in a fast-paced environment.\nExperience leading large-scale technology integrations, separations, deployments, or organizational disentanglements is highly desirable.\nExperience supporting global or geographically distributed operations is preferred.\nExperience within science, conservation, education, media, philanthropy, a nonprofit, or another mission-driven environment is preferred.\n\nPersonal Attributes:Determined, resourceful and practical.
