Onsemi is an American semiconductor company that was spun out of Motorola in 1999 and has since narrowed itself from a broad commodity chip supplier into a focused power and sensing business. Its silicon carbide and silicon power devices go into electric vehicle traction inverters, chargers and industrial drives, while its image sensors are used in automotive cameras and industrial vision, and it has deliberately exited lower-margin product lines to concentrate on these markets. Headquartered in Scottsdale, Arizona and listed on Nasdaq, it owns its own silicon carbide substrate manufacturing to secure supply.

onsemi is seeking a Metrology Engineer in our Hudson, NH site. As a Metrology Engineer at onsemi’s silicon carbide growth and fabrication facility, this position performs engineering, quality, and metrology activities supporting manufacturing operations and continuous improvement initiatives. Performs work individually and within cross-functional teams, applying engineering and statistical methods to improve measurement systems, product quality, process capability, and manufacturing efficiency. Able to take direction within a functional organization and work independently to achieve business objectives and project timelines. You will evaluate existing and new manufacturing requirements; propose new methods, measurement strategies, and process controls to maximize manufacturing efficiency, improve yield, reduce defects, and ensure product quality.

The Metrology Engineer will drive the following key business processes in the silicon carbide growth and fabrication factory:

  • Optimize, troubleshoot, and support metrology tools and inspection systems used in manufacturing operations.
  • Perform measurement system analysis (MSA) studies to ensure accuracy, repeatability, and reproducibility of measurement methods and equipment.
  • Develop, maintain, and improve Statistical Process Control (SPC) systems and monitoring strategies for critical process parameters.
  • Conduct data analysis using Minitab and other analytical tools to identify trends, variation sources, process capability, and improvement opportunities.
  • Lead root cause investigations and corrective action activities for quality issues, defect escapes, yield loss, and process excursions.
  • Drive defect screening improvement initiatives focused on defect reduction, containment effectiveness, and yield enhancement.
  • Develop and maintain inspection criteria, quality screening methods, and process control strategies.
  • Support Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and Control Plan development and maintenance for manufacturing processes.
  • Perform risk assessments and support implementation of preventive actions to reduce process and product quality risks.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing teams to improve process stability, measurement reliability, product quality, and operational efficiency.
  • Generate reports, dashboards, and statistical analyses to support management decision-making and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Support internal, customer, and third-party audits, including compliance with IATF requirements and quality management system standards.
  • Promote Lean Manufacturing principles including 5S, Kanban systems, standard work, and continuous improvement practices.
  • Assist with qualification activities for new equipment, measurement methods, process changes, and manufacturing improvements.
  • Train operators, technicians, and engineers on quality tools, SPC methodologies, inspection techniques, and metrology best practices.
  • Participate in cross-functional teams to improve manufacturing performance, cycle time, capacity utilization, and product quality.
  • Other duties as needed or assigned.

The successful candidate will possess:

  • B.S. degree in Engineering (Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related discipline).
  • 3-7 years of engineering experience in manufacturing, quality, metrology, process engineering, or semiconductor operations preferred.
  • Strong understanding of Statistical Process Control (SPC), process capability analysis, and statistical problem-solving techniques.
  • Experience conducting Measurement System Analysis (MSA), Gauge R&R studies, and measurement system qualification activities.
  • Working knowledge of FMEA, Control Plans, risk analysis methodologies, and corrective/preventive action systems.
  • Experience with Minitab for statistical analysis, data visualization, and process improvement projects.
  • Familiarity with IATF 16949 requirements, audit preparation, and quality management systems.
  • Experience working with manufacturing quality systems, defect screening methods, and yield improvement programs.
  • Knowledge of root cause analysis tools including 8D, Fishbone, 5 Why, and other structured problem-solving methodologies.
  • Understanding of Lean Manufacturing principles including 5S, Kanban, waste reduction, and continuous improvement practices.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret large data sets and communicate actionable recommendations.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel for data analysis and reporting.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills with the ability to work effectively across cross-functional teams and organizational levels.
