Onto Innovation strives to optimize customers’ critical path of progress by making them smarter, faster and more efficient.\nJob Summary & Responsibilities\nWe are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Technical Writer III to develop, maintain, and improve customer-facing technical documentation for complex hardware, software, and integrated systems. This role partners closely with engineering, product management, field service, and customer support teams to transform technical information into clear, accurate, and user-friendly documentation that supports customers throughout the product lifecycle.\nThe ideal candidate has experience creating documentation for technical products, managing multiple projects simultaneously, and working independently with subject matter experts to gather and communicate complex information effectively.\nKey Responsibilities\nCreate, edit, and maintain technical documentation for external customers, including:Product manuals\nSoftware application guides\nHardware installation and maintenance procedures\nSite preparation guides\nUpgrade and service instructions\nCrating and uncrating procedures\nTroubleshooting documentation\n\nDevelop documentation for hardware, software, and system-level products while ensuring technical accuracy and consistency.\nCollaborate with engineers, product managers, field service personnel, and other subject matter experts to gather information and validate content.\nIndependently research complex technical topics and translate them into clear, concise, and user-focused documentation.\nCreate and maintain visual content, including:Screenshots\nDigital photographs\nProcess flow diagrams\nTechnical illustrations\nSystem architecture diagrams\n\nManage multiple documentation projects and deliverables within established timelines and priorities.\nEnsure documentation complies with company standards, style guides, templates, and documentation best practices.\nReview, edit, and proofread content to maintain a high level of quality, consistency, and accuracy.\nContribute to continuous improvement initiatives for documentation processes, tools, templates, and content management practices.\nSupport document release and revision control processes for electronic documentation distribution.\nPeriodically travel to customer sites, manufacturing facilities, and internal teams to gather information and support documentation activities.\nQualifications\nBachelor's degree in Technical Communication, English, Journalism, Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field; equivalent experience will be considered.\n7+ years of professional technical writing experience supporting engineering, software, hardware, or other highly technical products.\nDemonstrated ability to create customer-facing documentation for complex technical systems.\nStrong writing, editing, proofreading, and organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.\nExperience interviewing subject matter experts and converting technical concepts into user-friendly content.\nProficiency with technical publishing and documentation tools such as:Adobe FrameMaker\nAdobe Acrobat\nMicrosoft Office Suite\nScreen capture and image editing applications\n\nAbility to work independently with minimal supervision while managing multiple priorities and deadlines.\nStrong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to collaborate across functional teams.\nPreferred Qualifications\nExperience documenting semiconductor, manufacturing, automation, industrial equipment, or enterprise software products.\nFamiliarity with content management systems, version control processes, or structured authoring methodologies.\nExperience creating and editing technical graphics and illustrations.\nKnowledge of documentation standards, style guides, and information architecture best practices.\nExperience working in a global environment and supporting international customers.\nTravel Requirements\nAbility to travel domestically up to 10% of the time, with additional travel as business needs require.\nWhy Join Onto Innovation?\nAt Onto Innovation, we believe your work should matter-and so should your well-being.
