Our Internal Communications team helps employees stay informed, connected, and engaged so they can focus on building and deploying safe and impactful AI. We partner across the company to explain what’s being built, why it matters, and how it connects to our strategy and mission.\nAbout the Role\nWe’re looking for an internal communications professional to help employees understand the work happening across OpenAI’s research and product organizations. You’ll translate technical developments, product milestones, and team priorities into clear, useful communications that connect people to the work and to one another.\nReporting to the Internal Communications lead for Research and Product, you’ll be the second member of the team dedicated to this part of OpenAI. You’ll independently own specific communications programs and projects within the broader strategy, build trusted relationships with technical teams, and identify stories and information employees need to hear. You’ll also help build practical processes that allow a small team to support a broad and fast-moving organization.\nThis role requires strong writing and editing skills, technical curiosity, and sound judgment. You should enjoy asking questions, making sense of complex information, and moving work forward independently, with guidance from your manager on broader strategy and sensitive issues.\nThis role is based in San Francisco, CA. We use a hybrid work model of three days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.\nIn this role, you will:\nOwn recurring communications programs that help employees understand research and product priorities, progress, and upcoming milestones.\n\nLead communications for defined projects and initiatives, developing plans, gathering input, drafting content, coordinating reviews, and managing delivery.\n\nTranslate complex technical and research concepts into accurate, accessible stories for employees with different levels of technical knowledge.\n\nBuild trusted relationships with researchers, product managers, engineers, and cross-functional partners to stay close to their work, identify important developments, and surface communication needs.\n\nWrite and edit content across internal channels, including leadership and org updates, Slack posts, FAQs, explainers, and All Hands materials.\n\nDevelop demos, research deep dives, and Q&A sessions that help employees hear directly from technical teams, including shaping content and preparing speakers.\n\nMaintain and improve communications workflows, including editorial planning, templates, review processes, and shared resources that keep information timely and easy to find.\n\nUse employee questions and feedback to improve communications, identifying gaps in understanding and recommending follow-up content or changes to format and cadence.\n\nPartner with your manager on major announcements and organizational changes, owning defined workstreams and flagging sensitive issues, dependencies, and decisions that need leadership input.\n\nYou might thrive in this role if you:\nHave 5+ years of experience in internal communications, product communications, journalism, or a related field, ideally with exposure to research or technical teams.\n\nBring strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills, with an emphasis on clarity, accuracy, and making information useful to the audience.\n\nHave independently managed communications projects from planning through delivery, coordinating stakeholders and balancing competing deadlines.\n\nAre curious about AI, research, and product development, and comfortable asking questions until you understand a topic well enough to explain it.\n\nBuild strong working relationships and can gather input, offer editorial guidance, and keep projects moving with busy partners.\n\nExercise sound judgment with sensitive information and ambiguity, and know when to make a decision independently or seek guidance.\n\nEnjoy creating practical, repeatable processes that improve the quality and consistency of communications.\n\nRespond well to feedback and adapt as priorities change.\n\nAbout OpenAI\nOpenAI is an AI research and deployment company dedicated to ensuring that general-purpose artificial intelligence benefits all of humanity.
