We partner closely with Product, Design, Growth, Data Science, and engineering teams across OpenAI to make purchasing effective and reliable, and new offerings easier to launch and monetize.\nAbout the Role\nWe’re looking for experienced Staff+ engineers with deep iOS or Android expertise and demonstrated experience contributing beyond mobile to frontend web or backend development.\nYou’ll shape and build purchasing and subscription experiences across mobile applications, web, and supporting product APIs. The work spans improving conversion, performance, and reliability, building reusable components, and enabling new product launches. You’ll combine product judgment with technical depth to set direction, lead initiatives across teams, and remain hands-on through implementation and delivery.\nApproximately 50% of the work will initially be native mobile development, with the remainder across web and product APIs. We’re looking for engineers who enjoy working across the stack and have concrete examples of doing so professionally. Depth in either iOS or Android is required; experience in both is not required.\nThis role is based in San Francisco, with three days per week in the office.\nIn this role, you will:\nArchitect and build purchasing and subscription experiences across native mobile, mobile web, and supporting product APIs.\n\nPartner with Product, Design, and Growth to identify customer needs, prioritize improvements, and shape technical direction for purchasing experiences.\n\nImprove conversion, performance, and reliability through experimentation, product analytics, and customer insights.\n\nDevelop reusable purchasing components and capabilities that help teams launch and monetize new products.\n\nCollaborate with engineering and cross-functional partners to deliver reliable purchasing experiences and support product launches.\n\nLead initiatives from exploration and technical design through implementation, launch, and ongoing operation.\n\nSet engineering standards and provide technical leadership through hands-on development, design reviews, and mentorship.\n\nYou might thrive in this role if you:\nHave demonstrated technical ownership at Staff level or beyond, shaping architecture and delivering substantial initiatives across teams.\n\nHave deep expertise in iOS or Android and a track record of shipping and operating production mobile applications.\n\nHave professional experience contributing to frontend web or backend development and enjoy working across platforms to move things forward\n\nCombine strong engineering fundamentals with product intuition and attention to performance, reliability, and the details of the customer experience.\n\nUse data and experimentation to identify opportunities and evaluate the impact of your work.\n\nBring clarity to ambiguous problems, align partners, and make thoughtful tradeoffs between immediate product needs and reusable capabilities.\n\nEnjoy hands-on engineering while helping other engineers develop their judgment and take on broader ownership.\n\nExperience in e-commerce, growth, checkout, subscriptions, or mobile monetization is particularly valuable, as is experience with app-store billing integrations and mobile release processes.\nAbout OpenAI\nOpenAI is an AI research and deployment company dedicated to ensuring that general-purpose artificial intelligence benefits all of humanity.
