About the role 

OpenUp has always believed that technology should strengthen the human side of mental well-being. This vision is now becoming real in a new way.Over the past years, we've matured from Excel-based reporting to a modern, cloud-native data platform (Snowflake, dbt, Airflow, Lightdash). Our data products sit at the heart of how we run the business: helping Commercial track account health and renewals, Product understand activation and impact, and Expert Operations plan capacity and monitor quality. 

In the last year, we have also built a dedicated internal AI capability that has delivered practical, high-impact solutions: from automating Customer Success reporting and Finance workflows to creating an AI-powered onboarding environment for our psychologist community. 

As Head of Data & AI, you will lead that next chapter. You will bring our Data and AI capabilities closer together and lead a team of around four people across analytics, data engineering and AI operations, while working closely with builders and AI champions throughout the organisation.

This includes shaping our Data & AI strategy, prioritising the right projects, defining the tech stack, and putting the right legal, privacy and quality guardrails in place. Just as importantly, you will help teams across OpenUp become more confident and capable in using AI themselves.

This is not a role from the sidelines. You will spend roughly half your time leading and coaching the team, and half working directly on high-impact projects. One day, you may be shaping our AI operating model, the next, you may dive into a complex data model, improve capacity forecasting or help rethink how we use data in pricing and commercial decisions.

About you

You combine analytical depth, technical understanding and business judgement. You do not need to be the most specialised engineer in the room, but you understand modern data and AI environments well enough to challenge assumptions.

You are super curious about AI and actively keep up with how the field is developing. You experiment with the latest models and tools, read broadly, build things yourself and form your own view on what is useful (and what isn’t). You can look beyond the hype and translate new possibilities into practical opportunities for OpenUp.

You are also a people leader and enjoy helping talented people grow, bring focus without taking away ownership, and build an open and collaborative team culture.

Next to that:

• Analytically strong: You can structure complex problems and design the right analyses to reach the best decisions, guiding the data team on data modelling and transformation logic along the way. 
• AI-native: You actively test new tools, build prototypes and use AI in your own work.
• Business-minded: You quickly understand business processes and understand where Data and AI can create the most value.
• Able to excite an organisation: You enjoy moving others, and can make AI understandable, practical and exciting for the wider organisation
• Hands-on: You are excited to get your hands dirty.

On the technical side:

• Experience with SQL is a plus, and experience with Python is helpful.
• You know the best practices on data modelling, and can challenge the team on it 
• You understand modern data tech stacks and tooling, as well as the evolving AI tooling landscape, including models, applications, hosting platforms and the guardrails needed to use them responsibly.

Experience:

• A university-level degree, preferably in a quantitative or technical field.
• 7+ years of experience, which may include consulting, data, analytics or AI, with at least 2 years leadership experience 
• 2-3 years experience working directly in data, analytics or AI.
