Technicians collect and process biological samples and environmental data during fishery-independent resource surveys. Work includes at-sea survey participation (5-140+ days annually), data QA/QC, sample processing, and equipment support. This is a hands-on science role that directly supports stock assessments and ecosystem-based fisheries management.\nResponsibilities\nParticipate in sea-going surveys aboard NOAA and partner vessels (sorting, identifying, weighing, measuring fish/invertebrates, collecting biological samples for age, growth, maturity, genetics, diet).\nStand scientific watches of up to 12 hours/day at sea.\nOperate electronic data acquisition systems for fisheries and oceanographic sampling.\nAssist with deployment, calibration, and maintenance of survey gear, acoustics, and optical/video equipment.\nConduct QA/QC of survey data using NOAA protocols; prepare documentation of sampling procedures and metadata.\nAnnotate benthic imagery and optical survey data as directed.\nMaintain, repair, and inventory sampling hardware (measuring boards, motion-compensated scales, barcode systems, touch screens).\nSupport cruise staging/de-staging, equipment prep, and vessel logistics.\nContribute to laboratory analysis of biological samples and assist with database management.\nTrain new staff (Levels II & III) and provide leadership of field parties/watches at sea (Level III).\nSummarize survey data, assist with reports, and contribute to outreach materials (manuals, protocols, blogs, newsletters).\nQualifications\nGeneral Requirements (all levels):\nExperience working aboard research or commercial vessels.\nAbility to work 12-hour shifts at sea for trips lasting up to 3 weeks.\nStrong teamwork and communication skills in challenging field environments.\nMust meet NOAA OMAO sea duty health criteria and provide proof of recent TB test.\nProficiency with Microsoft Office; familiarity with data entry and QA/QC practices.\nValid driver’s license.\nLevel I (Entry/Seasonal Technician):\nBasic familiarity with marine species ID in the Northwest Atlantic (fish/invertebrates).\nCoursework or experience in biological sciences preferred.\nAble to assist with sampling, data recording, and shipboard organization under supervision.\nLevel II (Experienced Technician):\nMinimum 2 years’ experience identifying fish and invertebrates in the Northwest Atlantic.\nAt least 1 year of experience with survey bottom trawls or shellfish dredges.\nExperience with fishery sampling hardware (electronic boards, scales, barcode systems).\nStrong written and verbal communication skills; ability to work independently.\nLevel III (Senior Technician):\nMinimum 200 days at sea (Bottom Trawl Survey) or 100 days (Shellfish/Advanced Tech Surveys).\nAt least 2 years’ experience with electronic data acquisition systems.\nExperience leading watches/field teams of up to 7 at sea.\nFamiliarity with acoustic net mensuration systems (Scanmar, Simrad, Marport).\nExperience querying/analyzing fishery-independent data from relational databases (e.g., Oracle).\nAbility to train staff, conduct QA/QC, and contribute to protocol development.","description_format":"text","description_chars":3432,"description_truncated":false,"requirements":{"experience_years_min":2,"management_years_min":null,"team_size_min":null,"manages_managers":false,"education":null,"security_clearance":false,"languages":[]},"benefits":[],"hiring_locations":[{"name":"United States","iso":"US","kind":"country"}],"hiring_excludes":[],"relocation_offered":false,"industries":["Professional Services","Military Logistics","Human Resources"],"lifecycle":[{"event":"open","at":"2026-10-14T10:27:53Z"}],"visa":[],"liveness":{"score":11,"band":"cold","label":"Long shot","p_open":1,"p_active":0.387,"p_room":0.28,"age_days":90,"expected_fill_days":27,"reasons":["conf:3","win:tail","crowd:junior"],"computed_at":"2026-10-20T05:45:00Z"},"pay":null,"html_url":"https://alion.io/job/orchard-llc-biological-technician","json_url":"https://alion.io/job/orchard-llc-biological-technician.json","meta":{"generated_at":"2026-10-20T17:14:12Z","cache_seconds":300,"methodology":"https://alion.io/methodology","terms":"https://alion.io/terms","contact":"https://alion.io/contact","api":"https://alion.io/developers","about":"Alion is a live layer of people, companies and AI agents: who they are, whether they are real and active right now, what they do and how to work with them, readable by people and by agents and paid per call.","catalog":"https://alion.io/catalog.json","usage":{"tier":"crawler_verified","counted_by":"address","units_charged":1,"used_today":19742,"day_limit":null,"remaining_today":null,"minute_limit":300,"resets_at":"2026-10-21T00:00:00Z"}},"offers":[{"id":"company.slices","title":"One company in depth, by slice","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002,"plus_per_slice":{"credits":0.05,"usd":0.005}},"unit":"per company, plus each slice with data","note":"the employer in depth","call":{"mcp_tool":"get_company","arguments":{"id":4420891},"rest":"https://alion.io/mcp/rest/get_company?id=4420891"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.slices&for=job%2Forchard-llc-biological-technician"},{"id":"market.stats","title":"A market slice: pay, demand and time to fill","status":"live","price":{"credits":1,"usd":0.1},"unit":"per slice","note":"pay, demand and time to fill for this role and place","call":{"mcp_tool":"market_stats"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=market.stats&for=job%2Forchard-llc-biological-technician"},{"id":"job.search","title":"Open jobs by role, technology, place, pay and visa","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002},"unit":"per posting in a list","note":"similar open postings","call":{"mcp_tool":"search_jobs"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=job.search&for=job%2Forchard-llc-biological-technician"},{"id":"company.verify","title":"Is this company real and active right now","status":"pilot","price":null,"unit":"per company","request":{"url":"https://alion.io/catalog/request","method":"POST","body":"{\"offer\": \"company.verify\", \"for\": \"job/orchard-llc-biological-technician\", \"note\": \"what you need it for\"}"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.verify&for=job%2Forchard-llc-biological-technician"}]}
