Backed by eight-figure contracts across the Department of Defense, we are strengthening national security by iterating closely with end users engaged in tactical operations.\nRole Summary\nOverland AI is hiring a Systems Safety Engineer to join our growing safety team within Systems, Safety, and Test Engineering (SST). You will own system safety for our autonomous ground vehicles across the full lifecycle, from concept and requirements through integration, test, and field operations. You'll work closely with the engineers building the system while keeping an independent view of risk. Your work produces the hazard analyses, safety requirements, and verification evidence behind our MIL-STD-882E safety programs, ATEC safety releases, and customer certifications, across multiple programs running in parallel.\nKey Responsibilities\nPerform hazard analyses (PHA, FHA, SHA, SSHA, O&SHA, FMEA, FTA) per MIL-STD-882E, scaled to system maturity.\nAnalyze autonomy and software-controlled behaviors, making sure software safety controls are captured, traced, and verified.\nDefine safety requirements and flow them into system and subsystem requirements.\nPartner with internal teams to drive safety features to implementation.\nMaintain hazard tracking and the system safety case, with traceability from hazard to mitigation to verification evidence.\nPartner with test teams on safety test objectives and acceptance criteria, and take part in lab, vehicle, and field testing.\nEvaluate verification evidence and support readiness reviews, safety releases, and risk acceptance decisions.\nPrepare safety documentation for ATEC, government, and commercial reviewers, and communicate risk clearly to leadership and external stakeholders.\nHelp build safety processes that scale across programs, and raise safety maturity across engineering.\nMinimum Qualifications\nBachelor's degree in engineering or a related technical discipline.\nHands-on system safety engineering experience on complex systems (autonomy, robotics, vehicles, aerospace, defense, or similar).\nWorking knowledge of MIL-STD-882E or related standards such as JSSSEH, UL 4600, ISO 26262, and ISO 21448.\nExperience producing safety artifacts for external review (e.g., Safety Assessment Reports).\nSound, independent engineering judgment on risk.\nComfort in a fast-moving environment with real hardware and field testing.\nDesired Qualifications & Experience\nExperience supporting ATEC or other DoD test and certification authorities.\nExperience with autonomous vehicles, ADAS, or semi-autonomous systems.\nExperience with developmental and operational test readiness.\nFamiliarity with MBSE/SysML (e.g., Cameo), GSN safety cases, requirements tools (Jama, DOORS), and Jira.\nLocation:\nThis role is located in Seattle, WA.\nCompensation & Benefits:\nPay range:\nSystem Safety Engineer: $170,000 - $225,000 annually\nActual base salary will bedeterminedon a case-by-case basis and may vary based on the following considerations: job-related knowledge and skills, education, and experience.\nOverland AI believes in creating a work environment that you look forward to embracing every day.
