Job Description Summary

Participating in, organizing and directing the work of an assigned area and/or crew of trades, such as, Electricians, Plumbers, Maintenance Mechanics, Carpenters, Painters and other skilled workers engaged in maintenance and installation work on Student Housing and Community Services (SHCS) facilities, costing jobs and ordering required materials.

Organizational Status

Reports to the Trades Manager.

Work Performed

Performing preventative and breakdown maintenance. Troubleshooting, repair and installation of low and high voltage equipment and systems. Testing and repairing fire protection systems. Working in compliance with applicable codes, instructions, and safety regulations in accordance with work orders, drawings, documents and time schedules. Responding to trouble calls and emergencies during and outside normal work hours. Supervising, organizing and allocating the work of an assigned crew of trades, such as, Electricians, Plumbers, Maintenance Mechanics, Carpenters, Painters and other skilled workers.

Supervising and participating in training workers/apprentices as necessary. Dealing with day-to-day on-site problems by initiating appropriate actions to correct the situation. Preparing cost estimates for jobs and ordering required materials. Maintaining work function related records, such as, timekeeping, costing, tools, equipment, work assignments, preventative maintenance schedules and test inspection reports. Communicating with customers as required to ensure the efficient delivery of service. Attending training and other workshops as required to maintain current knowledge of electrical and safety codes. Oversees testing and repairing fire protection system. Ensuring that employees under his/her jurisdiction work in a correct and safe manner and in accordance with all normal safety standards and practices and university and departmental policies and procedures. Checking to ensure that work is completed in accordance with requirements, specifications, and applicable codes. Carrying out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

Makes decisions regarding the organization and allocation of trades and other skilled workers and acceptability of work performed for assigned area and/or crew; inappropriate decisions may result in service delays, costs and possible safety issues.

Supervision Received

Works under general supervision and from oral and written instructions, work orders, drawings and specifications.

Supervision Given

Organizes, allocates and supervises an assigned crew of various building related trades and other skilled workers.

Minimum Qualifications

A trade certification to journeyperson level as a “B” ticket Electrician, Field Safety Representative certification, a valid BC driver’s license and a minimum five years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Registered Fire Protection Technician (RFPT) with Applied Science Technologies and Technicians of BC (ASTTBC) or CFAA Registered Technician. Experience in fire protection systems testing and repairing. Current knowledge of electrical and safety codes, regulations, standards and practices.Ability to work independently and effectively with minimum supervision.Ability to work various shifts. Must be able to respond at short notice to emergency calls outside working hours.Ability to effectively use standard office software packages (Microsoft Office) and controller programming software.Ability to communicate effectively.Knowledge of Student Housing and Hospitality Services operations, procedures and processes is an asset.
