Our innovative technology offers cleaner, safer, and more efficient logistics solutions. Join our dynamic team and help shape a smarter, greener future for global freight.\nBackend Software Engineer II \nParallel Systems is seeking a Software Engineer II to help build the train control software that lets our autonomous rail vehicles operate safely on the rail network. You'll work on the backend systems, written primarily in Rust, that model how trains are authorized to move: movement authorities, bulletins, switches, and signals, implemented in our system as motion rules and Parallel blocks. \nThis is a hands-on role with a clear growth path. You'll start by closing edge cases in our existing train control logic, move on to owning new features end to end (from reading railroad specs through technical design, backend, and UI changes), and grow into a core contributor on our path to supporting Positive Train Control (PTC). Prior rail experience is not required; curiosity and a willingness to learn a deep domain are. \nResponsibilities: \nImplement and extend backend features for critical train control applications, adding support for new train control concepts with guidance from senior engineers. \nDevelop and maintain system-level software written primarily in Rust. \nImprove the reliability and correctness of existing code by finding and fixing edge cases in train control logic. \nWrite and test code that meets our safety, security, and compliance standards. \nDebug and diagnose issues in simulation and on real hardware, escalating complex problems when needed. \nParticipate in code reviews and technical discussions and help write technical specs for the features you build. \nWhat Success Looks Like: \n After 30 days: You understand the core concepts behind train control (movement authorities, bulletins, switches, and signals) and how they're implemented technically in our system through motion rules and Parallel blocks. You've added support for one or two missing edge cases in train control. \nAfter 60 days: You've added support for a new train control feature, such as movement authorities that are only valid depending on the movement of other trains. You analyzed the requirements from specs, wrote a technical spec covering the necessary backend and UI changes, and implemented them in our codebase. You've also begun learning the concepts behind PTC and reading the associated specs. \nAfter 90 days: You've added support for several new train control features and have a solid understanding of the gap between what's required to support PTC and what exists in our system today. \nBasic Requirements: \nBachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience. \n3+ years of experience in backend or systems-level software development. \nExperience in C, C++, Rust, or other systems programming languages. \nProficiency with Linux environments, low-level system interactions, and memory management. \nPreferred Qualifications: \nExperience with Rust in production or a strong desire to work with Rust. \nExperience in safety critical application spaces such as autonomous vehicles, industrial control equipment, or aerospace. \nExperience in or knowledge of rail control systems is greatly preferred. \nFamiliarity with cloud-based architectures and containerized environments (Docker, Kubernetes). \nWe are committed to providing fair and transparent compensation in accordance with applicable laws. Salary ranges are listed below and reflect the expected range for new hires in this role, based on factors such as skills, experience, qualifications, and location. Final compensation may vary and will be determined during the interview process. The target hiring range for this position is listed below.\nTarget Salary Range:\n$122,000—$167,000 USD\nParallel Systems is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity in the workplace. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to any discriminatory factor protected by applicable federal, state or local laws. We work to build an inclusive environment in which all people can come to do their best work.\nParallel Systems is committed to the full inclusion of all qualified individuals. As part of this commitment, Parallel Systems will ensure that persons with disabilities are provided reasonable accommodations. If reasonable accommodation is needed to participate in the job application or interview process, to perform essential job functions, and/or to receive other benefits and privileges of employment, please contact your recruiter.","description_format":"text","description_chars":4805,"description_truncated":false,"requirements":{"experience_years_min":3,"management_years_min":null,"team_size_min":null,"manages_managers":false,"education":{"level":"bachelor","optional":false},"security_clearance":false,"languages":[]},"benefits":[],"hiring_locations":[],"hiring_excludes":[],"relocation_offered":false,"industries":["Rail Transport","Autonomous Driving","Logistics"],"lifecycle":[{"event":"open","at":"2026-10-07T01:12:38Z"}],"visa":[{"country":"US","licensed_sponsor":true,"evidence":"H-1B filings in 12 months: 1","filings_12m":1,"filings_prev_12m":0,"green_card_filings_12m":0,"median_offered_wage_usd":162500,"route":null,"cap_exempt":false,"checked_at":"2026-10-03T21:08:04+00:00","sources":["US Department of Labor: LCA disclosure data (H-1B, H-1B1, E-3)"],"filings_for_role_12m":0}],"liveness":{"score":86,"band":"hot","label":"Hiring now","p_open":1,"p_active":0.86,"p_room":1,"age_days":3,"expected_fill_days":59,"reasons":["conf:1","win:early"],"computed_at":"2026-10-10T05:45:15Z"},"pay":{"stated_usd_annual":167000,"is_top_pay":false},"html_url":"https://alion.io/job/parallel-systems-backend-software-engineer-ii","json_url":"https://alion.io/job/parallel-systems-backend-software-engineer-ii.json","meta":{"generated_at":"2026-10-12T03:02:48Z","cache_seconds":300,"methodology":"https://alion.io/methodology","terms":"https://alion.io/terms","contact":"https://alion.io/contact","api":"https://alion.io/developers","about":"Alion is a live layer of people, companies and AI agents: who they are, whether they are real and active right now, what they do and how to work with them, readable by people and by agents and paid per call.","catalog":"https://alion.io/catalog.json","usage":{"tier":"crawler_verified","counted_by":"address","units_charged":1,"used_today":4530,"day_limit":null,"remaining_today":null,"minute_limit":300,"resets_at":"2026-10-13T00:00:00Z"}},"offers":[{"id":"company.slices","title":"One company in depth, by slice","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002,"plus_per_slice":{"credits":0.05,"usd":0.005}},"unit":"per company, plus each slice with data","note":"the employer in depth","call":{"mcp_tool":"get_company","arguments":{"id":6398},"rest":"https://alion.io/mcp/rest/get_company?id=6398"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.slices&for=job%2Fparallel-systems-backend-software-engineer-ii"},{"id":"market.stats","title":"A market slice: pay, demand and time to fill","status":"live","price":{"credits":1,"usd":0.1},"unit":"per slice","note":"pay, demand and time to fill for this role and place","call":{"mcp_tool":"market_stats"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=market.stats&for=job%2Fparallel-systems-backend-software-engineer-ii"},{"id":"job.search","title":"Open jobs by role, technology, place, pay and visa","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002},"unit":"per posting in a list","note":"similar open postings","call":{"mcp_tool":"search_jobs"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=job.search&for=job%2Fparallel-systems-backend-software-engineer-ii"},{"id":"company.verify","title":"Is this company real and active right now","status":"pilot","price":null,"unit":"per company","request":{"url":"https://alion.io/catalog/request","method":"POST","body":"{\"offer\": \"company.verify\", \"for\": \"job/parallel-systems-backend-software-engineer-ii\", \"note\": \"what you need it for\"}"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.verify&for=job%2Fparallel-systems-backend-software-engineer-ii"}]}
