Cloud Data Platform Engineer

What You’ll Do:

The Cloud Data Platform Engineer will design, build, automate, and support the cloud platform capabilities that enable Canadian Tire’s Data, Analytics, and AI strategy. This role is a senior hands-on engineering role focused on delivering secure, scalable, reliable, and cost-effective cloud-based data platform services across Azure, Databricks, Unity Catalog, Synapse, and related cloud data technologies.

The successful candidate will bring advanced hands-on expertise in Terraform, PowerShell, ADO (Azure DevOps), CI/CD, branching strategies, infrastructure-as-code, cloud automation, and platform development. This role will be expected to perform development work to build reusable engineering patterns, automation, deployment pipelines, and cloud platform capabilities. They will also be expected to provide technical oversight of cloud engineering work, perform code reviews, ensure deliverables meet quality standards, and help raise the overall engineering bar for the team. They will work closely with cloud engineers, architects, data engineers, security, infrastructure, operations, and product teams to engineer platform capabilities, facilitate technical delivery sessions, coordinate work across teams, and communicate progress, risks, dependencies, and technical recommendations to stakeholders.

The role requires a continuous improvement mindset, strong communication skills, and the ability to identify opportunities to simplify operations, improve platform reliability, reduce manual effort, and accelerate the delivery of enterprise data, analytics, and AI capabilities.

• Design, build, develop, deploy, and support enterprise cloud platform capabilities within Microsoft Azure that enable secure and scalable data, analytics, machine learning, and AI workloads.
• Develop, maintain, and enhance Infrastructure-as-Code solutions using Terraform, including reusable modules, templates, standardized deployment patterns, and automated provisioning capabilities.
• Perform hands-on development work to build automation scripts, platform services, deployment pipelines, reusable engineering patterns, and operational tooling.
• Create, optimize, and support automation solutions using PowerShell, Azure DevOps, and cloud-native automation capabilities to reduce manual effort and improve operational efficiency.
• Design, implement, and maintain Azure DevOps pipelines supporting cloud infrastructure, platform services, and CI/CD-based deployments.
• Establish and promote branching strategies, Git-based workflows, pull request practices, code review expectations, and release management standards.
• Review cloud engineering deliverables, including Terraform modules, automation scripts, deployment pipelines, and configuration changes, to ensure they meet quality, security, maintainability, and reliability expectations.
• Conduct code reviews, provide constructive technical feedback, and help establish engineering standards, reusable patterns, and quality gates for cloud platform development work.
• Engineer and support platform capabilities across Azure Databricks, Unity Catalog, Azure Synapse Analytics, data governance services, and related data platform technologies.
• Collaborate with architects, data engineers, cloud engineers, security, infrastructure, operations, and product teams to plan and deliver technical work across multiple platform workstreams.
• Lead or facilitate technical working sessions to review designs, clarify implementation details, resolve technical blockers, and align teams on delivery plans.
• Identify, manage, and communicate technical risks, dependencies, issues, and path-forward recommendations to delivery teams and leadership.
• Analyze cloud environments and recommend improvements that strengthen reliability, scalability, resiliency, security, performance, and cost efficiency.
• Support platform monitoring, observability, capacity planning, incident resolution, root cause analysis, and operational improvement activities.
• Contribute to disaster recovery, business continuity, access management, networking, security configuration, and audit support activities.
• Create and maintain technical documentation, implementation guides, operational runbooks, and knowledge-sharing materials.
• Coach and support junior and intermediate engineers by promoting engineering best practices, reusable patterns, automation, and continuous improvement.
• Prepare clear technical updates and status communications for stakeholders, including progress, risks, decisions, dependencies, and recommended next steps.

What You Bring:

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related discipline is preferred.
• Equivalent combination of education and practical experience may be considered.
• Certification or formal training in Azure, Cloud Engineering, DevOps, Terraform, Databricks, Data, Business Intelligence, Data Science, Machine Learning, or AI is an asset.
• Agile, Lean, Six Sigma, or related delivery methodology experience is an asset.
• 5-8+ years of experience in Cloud Engineering, Platform Engineering, DevOps, Infrastructure Engineering, Application Development, or related disciplines.
• Strong hands-on experience designing, developing, and implementing cloud solutions, with Microsoft Azure as the preferred cloud technology.
• Strong hands-on Terraform skills, including experience developing reusable modules, managing state, implementing secure deployment patterns, and applying infrastructure-as-code best practices.
• Experience performing development work to build automation, deployment assets, platform services, scripts, reusable patterns, and operational tooling.
• Advanced experience building automation solutions using PowerShell.
• Hands-on experience with Azure DevOps, Git, branching strategies, pull requests, code reviews, CI/CD pipeline design, automated testing practices, and release management.
• Demonstrated experience performing code reviews, assessing engineering deliverables, and ensuring work produced by cloud engineers meets quality, security, maintainability, and operational readiness standards.
• Experience supporting cloud-based analytics, data, or AI platforms, preferably including Azure Databricks, Unity Catalog, Azure Synapse Analytics, and Azure-based data platform services.
• Application development mindset is an asset, including the ability to think in terms of reusable components, maintainable code, modular design, automated testing, version control, and long-term supportability.
• Strong understanding of cloud networking, identity and access management, security, monitoring, observability, disaster recovery, and operational resiliency concepts.
• Demonstrated ability to drive automation, standardization, cost optimization, and operational improvement initiatives.
• Strong troubleshooting, analytical thinking, and problem-solving skills for complex cloud platform and infrastructure issues.
• Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain technical details, risks, and recommendations to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Ability to facilitate technical sessions, coordinate delivery with cross-functional teams, and provide clear status updates on work progress, blockers, risks, and decisions.
• Skilled in building relationships, navigating organizational layers, and collaborating across engineering, architecture, security, operations, and product teams.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to secure, maintainable, reusable, and high-quality engineering solutions.
• Self-motivated, collaborative, and innovative team member who can work through ambiguity and lead technical delivery in a changing environment.
• Previous experience working in a retail, data platform, analytics, or enterprise cloud environment is an asset.

Broadband Salary Range: $64,000 - $106,000

Our typical hiring range is between $64,000 and $85,000. Salary decisions are also dependent on other factors such as your experience, industry benchmarks, internal equity and other role-specific requirements. For critical roles, the compensation offering will be reviewed to ensure alignment with market rate and conditions and the unique value you bring to the role.
