This role owns features and components end-to-end and collaborates with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality payment applications, services, and systems.\nThe Software Engineer II contributes across all phases of the software development lifecycle-from requirements analysis through deployment and ongoing support-and is expected to uphold Payarc’s engineering standards and secure, PCI DSS-compliant data-handling practices.\nEssential Duties and Responsibilities\nDesign, develop, and maintain software applications, APIs, and backend services with limited guidance\nBuild and integrate secure APIs and services, including payment-related functionality, in compliance with PCI DSS\nWrite clean, maintainable, and well-documented code\nParticipate in code reviews and pull requests-both giving and receiving constructive feedback-and follow engineering best practices\nCollaborate with product managers, UI/UX designers, and other engineers to deliver features that meet user and business needs\nDebug, test, and resolve technical issues of moderate complexity, including production defects surfaced through monitoring tools\nContribute to system architecture and design discussions\nOptimize application performance, scalability, and reliability\nEnsure security, privacy, and data-protection standards are followed, including secure handling of sensitive and cardholder data\nEvaluate and adopt new technologies and tools that improve development efficiency\nMentor and support Software Engineer I team members as needed\nParticipate in Agile/Scrum ceremonies using JIRA and Confluence (as applicable)\nTechnology Environment\nPayarc engineers work across a broad, modern technology stack. Depending on the team and project, you may work with:\n Backend: PHP (Laravel, Nova, Apiato) and services in languages such as Java, C#, Python, Go, and C++\nFrontend: JavaScript with React and Angular, plus jQuery; HTML5, CSS3, LESS/SASS; Material Design\n Mobile: native Android (Kotlin, Java) and iOS (Swift, Objective-C), with cross-platform work in React Native/Flutter; libraries such as Retrofit, OkHttp, and Firebase\n Data: relational databases (MySQL, Oracle, Firebird) and NoSQL data stores\n Cloud & DevOps: Amazon Web Services (AWS), Git/GitHub, CI/CD pipelines, Docker, and Kubernetes\n Payments & security: PCI DSS-compliant systems, encryption standards such as TDES and DUKPT, and integrations with POS systems, terminals (e.g., PAX, AMP), and Magtek card readers\n AI & machine learning: applied ML and LLM-based workflows in Python (TensorFlow, PyTorch, scikit-learn), including vector databases and embeddings\nCollaboration & tooling: Agile/Scrum delivery with JIRA and Confluence, and application monitoring with tools such as Crashlytics and New Relic\nRequirements\nQualificationsRequired\n2-4 years of professional software development experience\nProficiency in one or more of Payarc’s core languages and frameworks (e.g., PHP/Laravel, JavaScript with React or Angular, Java, C#, Python, or Kotlin)\nExperience building and consuming RESTful APIs and web services\nExperience with relational databases such as MySQL or Oracle\nProficiency with Git/GitHub, including pull requests and code reviews\nStrong problem-solving and analytical skills\nPreferred\nExperience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), with AWS preferred\nFamiliarity with CI/CD pipelines\nExperience with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes)\nKnowledge of NoSQL databases\nMobile development experience (Android with Kotlin, Retrofit/OkHttp, Firebase) or applied AI/ML exposure\nFamiliarity with PCI DSS and secure handling of cardholder data\nExposure to encryption standards such as TDES and DUKPT\nExperience working in Agile environments with JIRA and Confluence\nKnowledge, Skills, and Abilities\nStrong understanding of software design principles\nAbility to write efficient, scalable, and maintainable code\nAbility to work independently on features of moderate complexity\nStrong collaboration, communication, and interpersonal skills\nAbility to manage multiple tasks and deadlines\nSound judgment and resourcefulness in solving problems\nCommitment to code quality, testing, and security\nContinuous learning mindset\nEducation\nBachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field required (or equivalent practical experience).\nWork Environment This position operates in a professional office or remote environment, based out of Payarc’s Greenwich, CT office with flexibility as needed.
