At Pinterest, you’ll experience hands-on access to an incredible vault of data and contribute large-scale recommendation systems in ways you won’t find anywhere else.\nAs a machine learning intern at Pinterest, you'll work on tackling new challenges in machine learning and artificial intelligence. You'll conduct research that can be applied across Pinterest engineering teams and engage in external collaborations and mentoring, while also performing research in any of the following areas: image recognition, user modeling, recommender systems,search, ads, ranking, natural language processing, neural networks, personalization, graph representation learning, and big data analytics.\n\nNote to applicants:\nBy applying to this role, you will be considered for multiple intern roles open across our various ML teams. Depending on the team, our summer internships will be located either remote or hybrid in San Francisco, Palo Alto, New York or Seattle offices.\nWe offer 2 internship start dates:\nMay 17, 2027 - August 6, 2027\nJune 14, 2027 - September 3, 2027 \nWhat you’ll do:\nLead your own project start to finish to contribute in cutting-edge research in machine learning and artificial intelligence that can be applied to Pinterest problems\nGain hands-on experience with production ML systems, including algorithmic research, infrastructure, data engineering, training, inference, and product, to deliver innovative solutions. You will be exposed to full-stack production ML systems.\nLeverage frontier AI tools and agents to accelerate engineering implementation, including prototyping and experimentation work.\nValidate AI-generated outputs through testing, code review, and critical thinking, ensuring solutions are accurate, maintainable, secure, and aligned with team standards.\nUse AI to better understand unfamiliar code, investigate bugs, and summarize technical context or documentation.\nContribute in cutting-edge research in machine learning and artificial intelligence that can be applied to Pinterest problems\nWrite clean, efficient, and sustainable code\nTake proactive ownership over the completion and quality of your tasks and project with minimal guidance from your mentor, manager, and peers\nWhat we’re looking for:\nWorking towards a PhD in Computer Science, ML, NLP, Statistics, Information Sciences or related field\nProficiency in at least one systems language (Java, C++, Python) or one ML framework (Tensorflow, Pytorch, MLFlow)\nProficiency with AI-native engineering, including the design of agent-friendly codebases.\nHigh degree of autonomy in learning new agent-first development tools.\nStrong critical thinking when working with AI-generated suggestions, with a clear approach to validating correctness, performance, security, and maintainability.\nComfort iterating on prompts, refining workflows, and adapting AI-assisted approaches based on the problem, context, and constraints.\nExperience in research and in solving analytical problems\nStrong communicator and team player.
